Sweet find!

That's a nice catch. Believe it or not, I just scored an almost identical machine, except mine's a labeled a 'Super J'.

At the risk of hijacking your thread, may I ask how you repaired the automatic shutoff switch? I'm having a problem with mine, maybe the same problem you had. When I put a fresh bag in the machine, plugged it in and turned it on, the "Check Bag" light came on and the vacuum wouldn't run. Ironically, it would turn on with the bag compartment door open, which I don't believe it's supposed to do.

I took the bag door apart to examine the switch and it appears as if it had overheated sometime in the past. The contacts are a little blackened and the plastic chassis appears to have melted enough that the back half of the contact, the one to which the white wire connects, is no longer held securely in place. After fussing with it for a few minutes, I got everything back in place and it's working okay, but I doubt it will hold for very long.

Oddly enough, the switch appears to have been designed so it can be easily bypassed, although I have no idea where this was an intended feature. There's a second terminal on the side where the black wire connects. The white wire could easily be moved to that spot, effectively bypassing and disabling the automatic shutoff switch and "Check Bag" light. I'm just not sure I want to do that. Would that compromise the safety of the machine? I would prefer to find a new switch to replace this damaged one so have the machine will work as it is supposed to but I do recognize that as a potential 'plan-b'.

I appreciate any insights you may be able to provide.

When you take the cover off the front of the vac you will see the control valve to the right. There are 2 screws that hold it in place. The valve will shut off early if the screw in cap is damaged (the plastic is broken holding the O ring in place). Mine didn't function at all, so there are things to check for

1. pull the tube off of the nipple on the hose opening going to the bag and run a small wire thru the nipple to see if it is plugged. Make sure to put the tube back on the nipple after you checked it.

2. Take the valve off of the plastic base plate, then unscrew the cap, check the little plunger to see if the valve is stuck. Check to see if the plastic is broken holding the O rings in place.

3. Check to see if the diaphram is ok.

4. Check to see if the rubber seal between the bag housing and the front cover is ok.

When you put the valve back together, screw the cap back in till it bottoms and take the dial fitting it into the plastic tab on the valve making sure that the alignment marks on the cap and the dial line up ( you may have to back off on the control valve knob to get them to aling). Then fit the other end of the dial into the hole in the post of the front cover. Fit the control valve back into place, then screw the valve on to the backing plate.

In the case of my Golden J (model 1205) the plunger was just stuck in the control valve knob. Also the brass nipple was plugged with junk.

Here's a diagram of how some of this goes together.

As to the Check Bag light, the contacts were just dirty and needed to be cleaned on mine. That switch hasn't been available for years now. I've taken a spare switch off a dead Super J parts machine.

Hope this makes sense and helps

Great work, Ray--that gold and silver really sparkles and it's nice that it works/sounds like new once again. The Model 1205/Jubilee is one of Electrolux Corporation's finest mid-century cleaners to be sure.

BikerRay,

Thanks for taking the time to write all that up. It is very enlightening. I'll certainly go through and make sure the valve control is functioning properly. If the switch continues to give trouble, I may just have to bypass it until I can find one.

my very first electrolux was a golden j. i found it for $5 at a st vincent de paul thrift store in dallas. amazing what some people throw in the trash. thanks for saving it. here's mine (i bought the pn separately on ebay)

Very nice Electrolux find there! One time, back many years ago, I found a complete Super J....hose, wand & PN....thrown out in the trash. All it needed was a new PN cord which cost $12 to get it running again. And it had it's original, airtight cloth hose too. Amazing what people will foolishly throw away.

Now, not to make anyone envious or jealous....but I did find 5 bag lockout switches for the metal canisters, NOS at an Aerus dealer in Brampton, Ontario, for my Grand Marquise. Of course, I took all of them, & no I won't be parting with them anytime soon :-).

Rob. You may not have supplied me with a switch but you supplied me with something almost as good—the actual name of the part. I just found it on eBay. I think I'll order two just in case my 1205 ever needs one. Thanks!

Edgar, I am glad I was able to help you in some way to get your Electrolux parts :-). By the way, it might also be wise for you at this time to pick up a couple of spare power switches for your 1205 & Super J. I had to recently replace the power switch in my Grand Marquise, & found that parts are becoming VERY difficult to obtain directly thru Aerus....they are discontinuing most parts for the metal canisters. Sweetsweep.com does have the 1205 & Super J switch, so you might want to grab a couple while they can still supply them.

They have the 1205 switch, complete with its bracket. But for the Super J, they only have the switch itself. I guess one could grind off the rivets to remove the old switch from its bracket and then mount the new switch using some sheet metal screws.

What did you do to clean up that machine? It looks like brand new!!! How did you polish the chrome top? And did you do anything to repair the oxidation/fading on the white plastic, or was it in great shape when you found it?

The bumper around the front door, along the sides, and around the back end was cleaned with an SOS pad, then I cleaned any marks off with lighter fluid. After it was cleaned I just used a little paste wax on the bumpers.

The Chrome top I used an SOS pad then polished with TurtleWax Chrome Polish.

The plastic portion of the top and handle I just cleaned with dishwashing soap and a toothbrush.

If the 1205 is an early one the bag lock out switch is different from a Super J switch.

The very early 1205 used a slide switch for the bag lock out.

The later 1205s used the newer style spring contact bag lock out switch like in the Super J.

When you're talking about early and late 1205s and the lockout switch, are you referring to the teal 1205s or the Golden J 1205s?
