Electrolux Genesis LX

I have a Genesis LX without the electric port. Can one be added, so I can use an electric hose with a Sidekick?

Nice machine...

It's virtually identical to my Discovery Plus. The "Plus" part of mine is a couple of brackets for onboard tool storage, added before that feature became trendy on uprights. It's kind of unwieldy to use fully kitted out. Taking at least the hose off when in use makes it a whole lot more user friendly. One of the other big changes they made to the Discovery/Epic/Genesis upright along the way was to relocate the power cord to the end of the handle. Mine is at the base of the handle. Right now, that machine is buried at the back of my barn since I've loaded a significant portion of my dad's toy collection in front of it over the past few months. It may be years before I sell off enough of the toys to be able to see the thing again but I still have three 'Lux metal canisters in accessible locations. Also buried back there are my Filter Queen and both shop vacs.

Thanks myles_v and hunan.

I thought someone said in another thread that the socket could be added, but I couldn't locate it. Maybe it was just a wish.

hunan, I'd like to see photos of the two locations of the port when you can. I've only seen the one at the base. Do you happen to know exactly which label had the first relocated port? That sounds like a better set-up. I'd rather get an older one with that feature rather than a newer one.

Like I said, the machine is totally buried at the back of my barn right now and I don't foresee having access to it for quite some time. Fortunately, I had posted a thread about that machine when I got it back in March. You'll have to scroll down a bit to see the photos of mine. My Discovery doesn't have an auxiliary power port. As far as I know, none of them did. However, someone else did post pictures in that same thread of the auxiliary power port on a later version of the machine. I've never seen one in the flesh but I have to wonder if it would be terribly difficult to remove that piece from a trashed machine and add it to one like mine. If I ever have the opportunity to try it, I'll certainly post the results here.

Here's the auxiliary port on my Epic 3500 SR. My Aerus Lux Legacy (my profile picture) also has a nearly identical port.
It would be easy to miss if you weren't looking for it.

Thanks for the link and pic. I appreciated your pics in the other thread, Edgar, and agree that it's helpful to post such information as a reference--particularly if it's not already on the web. As for the tool set-up and other information on the Model 1572E/Discovery Plus, you may be able to get a copy of the owner's manual by contacting Aerus's corporate office if it isn't on the website.

It seems to me that the electric port was introduced on Electrolux uprights with the Model 1717/Genesis LXe (presuming that the 'e' referenced electric hose & port.

As I thought about adding a pigtail port, I remembered that this occurred on many Model Fs after the power nozzle was introduced in 1959. So, I would think, too, that the same could be done for the uprights.

Myles, is the upright cord on your Epic 3500SR still detachable, or are they now hard-wired? I'm guessing it's the 75h anniversary model, U110P. I like the oyster and fog color combination.

The electrical cable comes in through the plastic handle piece and down through the metal handle tube. It connects inside of there.
Earlier models had the cord come straight out of the tip of the plastic handle and they were recalled by Electrolux.

I chatted with an Aerus rep about the difference between the Genesis LX and Genesis LXe. She messaged the engineering department who stated the following:

1) The Discovery series, Regency Series, Special Edition, and Genesis had cords that were detachable from an electrical outlet at the base of their handles (beginning with the Discovery III it was located in the newly-added "bulkhead" (bottom cord wrap). None of these cleaners had an auxiliary outlet, so they were only compatible with straight suction tools.

2) The first Electrolux USA uprights to have the hard-wired power cords were the Genesis LX and Genesis LXe. Initially, the cord was secured at the top of the hand grip; then for performance and safety reasons the handles were recalled and replaced with ones that had cords secured on the back of the hand grip. Except for some of the commercial uprights (including the current model) all Electrolux uprights were styled with the hard wired power cord and auxiliary outlet.

3) In order to assess upright customer desire for a Sidekick accessory, an option was was provided: the Genesis LX (sans the auxiliary outlet) and Genesis LXe (with the auxiliary outlet). The same "bulkhead" was used on both, so they appeared to be the same. The field test showed that customers favored the Sidekick option, so the regular line of household uprights since that time has included the auxiliary port.

4) The rep couldn't remember if a retrofit kit was ever available for cleaners without the auxiliary outlet, but they do not have any in their current stock.

I picked one up today...

So I got a Prolux Plus from a thrift store close to my apartment building and I was wondering if anybody know more details about these. All I know is the years these were produced and the amp differences.

Congrats on your Prolux Plus purchase. It was one of Electrolux Corporation's commercial models. The "Plus" meant that the power cord was hard-wired below the hand grip, so there's an auxiliary outlet in which you can plug in a hose cord to run the Sidekick upholstery/stair cleaner. The Prolux series ran from about 1987-1995. Earlier motors were 8.5 amps and later ones were 10 amps; I think they were the same ones used on the household versions.

Electrolux commercial upright description:

1) no headlight
2) 40' - 50' grounded cord with heavy duty insulation
3) reinforced plastic

The looped handle and system performance indicators were introduced on the Model U129A with the Commercial label which succeeded the Prolux series.

You'll find the specs either stamped on the top of the brush roll hood--release the handle to view or on a nameplate decal affixed to the bottom plate.

Post some pics of your cleaner.

So here's the Prolux. It was priced down to $7 instead of $13 like the other vacuums I saw at the thrift store because I noticed the brushroll wouldn't turn on. Luckily these came with a thermal reset button so that fixed the problem. The only parts it needs replacing is the bumper and (Correct me if I say it wrong) the bag nozzle because one of the tabs broke off. I'm also thinking about replacing the brushroll and the back wheels as well because they are both really worn out. It's really scratched on the bottom of the nozzle but everywhere else looks fine to me. It will need to get cleaned up really good because I can smell that someone might have either sucked up mud or damp carpets with this. Right now my Diplomat LX is at Great Vacs getting cleaned up and if they do a good job on it, I might send this in to get it cleaned as well. Other than that, I'm really glad that I got this. The specs do look kinda scratched so I can't really get a full detail of this model

I just use the generic paper MultiFilter bags in my Discovery Plus. My understanding is they're made by the same company that makes the Electrolux branded bags. I don't know what to tell you about the filters since the Discovery series didn't have them. I think in the consumer line, they initially showed up on the Epic.

Thanks for the photos. Looks like it's in pretty good shape--especially at such a great sales price.

Since this is a thread for the Genesis series, I am going to start a new vintage thread to continue our discussion.

I also discovered that the Genesis LX has a 9.5 amp motor, and the Genesis LXe had a 10 amp motor. Is there much of a difference in performance?
