I originally bought this none working Kirby 511 for parts and was going use it to fix up a 513 that I'm working on.  Now Im tempted to try bringing it back to life.  it just seems like such a shame to gut it and toss the rest into a parts bin.   I don't know the history of this machine. just that it didn't work.

well, I discovered that all off the screws where loose for the bearing plate,  the field coil and the motor brush holders where loose and twisted. the motors cooling fan was actually caught and jammed on one the coil screws. The little round spring the goes behind the rear bearing is also missing.

so maybe someone attempted a repair in the past and gave up? not sure.  its a mystery for sure .

I did try putting every thing back as it should be and powered it up. It runs very slow and gets very hot very fast...

to me it looks like the windings are burnt near the commutator.  the field coil  has some surface rust but I don't see any sign of a short on the coil but cant tell for sure.

I am attaching pictures for better detail.

does anyone happen to have or know where I can by the replacement amateur and field coil ? it doesn't matter to me if its the 3 amp or 4amp version.. I also was told on the kirby FB page that DS50 or DS80 motor could used as well.   I figure even if it's not original, it is better than just letting it sit .  I have not reached out to the kirby co. yet as Im sure that's the most expensive way to go.  hoping maybe someone with an old vac shop will see this post and have the parts.

I'd really like to try bringing this one back to life unless the parts are crazy expensive.

thanks

AJ

Hi

The only motors that will work are 505-515. 516 the changed the motor housing the fan sat deeper in the housing and completely different mo/or housing.
If you try other motors you'd find out exactly what the last owner did it didn't work.
505-515 nothing else.

If you were to replace just the armature, you would need to find one with the number, 10530 or 11320 (according to the service manual). If you buy an armature without one of those numbers, it could potentially be the wrong diameter and not fit inside your field.

If you decide to replace both, make sure they are a matched set according to the page shown below

Hope this helps!

Hey thanks for the info.
So when you say about what the last owner did . Are you saying that this one has the wrong armature ?
I honestly don’t know very much about the earlier 500 series. So I wouldn’t know the difference if it has the correct motor in it or not.

Hey thanks for those part numbers !

I stopped in my local vac shop yesterday ( actually, the only vac shop and authorized Kirby shop left in my area) they tried looking to see if they could order me thr parts I’m looking for and she couldn’t find any thing. Actually the oldest machine she could order an armature for would be the Kirby model 1CR classic.
So I may just end up using this machine for parts as I originally intended to do and make my 513 a really nice machine.

The

Picture of the motor is a 1960 motor. Kirby models 515-sanitronic VII 1955-1964 armature isn't made for the 1951 511. The field coil looks post 515 era too.
I meant the last owner put this cluster in and realized it didn't work. If you put in a ds50-80 setup you mentioned you also would find it wouldn't work.
I have field coils and armatures that would fit your machine. If your interested let me know.

Hey thanks for the info. I really didn’t know if the parts were correct or not. I’m glad you could clear that up for me. I may be interested in getting the armature and field from you. It just depends on the cost. I don’t wanna invest more than the machine is worth. Working on these machines is just something do for fun.
Thanks
AJ
