Electrolux 1521 Question (Diamond Jubilee)

I've read on the forum that the early 1521 motors were problematic. I just disassembled an early Diamond Jubilee, and it's motor is pictured on the right. The other motor is a genuine Electrolux motor that came from an Ultralux LX.

The Diamond Jubilee was very clean, with very little dust inside. However, it had that old, funky vacuum smell, and it has some carbon dust built up on the motor (even though the vacuum and motor don't seem to have that much use).

I'm going to disassemble the motor and clean it up, but I'm just wondering if someone knows if the motor on the left is the problematic motor from the early 1521 run! This inquiring mind wants to know!

I've heard some people sing the praises of the Lamb motor that is in the Electrolux knock-off, but this motor has more than enough power.

So wait a minute. Which motor did you use? The original one (right) or the Electrolux one (left)?

I don't know anything about *these* motors, but I'll make some observations. The motor on the left is clearly an older design, all metal frame, brushes perpendicular to the field coils.

Sometimes they engineer the brushes to be at a slightly advanced angle to perpendicular, to help prevent arcing, but the newer motor on the right had the brushes at 45 degrees, which is way more than an adjustment. Likely the armature is wound differently because of that, so I'll wager the armatures are not interchangeable between the two motors. The field coils look the same. But the newer motor has a plastic frame, which is fine... until a bearing failure then it'll melt. If and when, of course.

They are both Electrolux motors...they both came out of 1521s. I ended up using the one on the right, because it was already fully serviced and ready to go. The older looking motor with the metal bearing bridge is the original motor that came out of the Diamond Jubilee pictured.

You need to direct all Electrolux motor questions to John (tig21er). Nobody else alive knows as much about Electrolux motors. The motor on the right looks like the early Lamb motor. I've restored about a dozen Diamond J's and the motors all looked like the one on the left. But I could be totally wrong about the right pictured motor being a Lamb.


 


IMO the Diamond J motors got a bad rap. They had some problems early on and in desert climates.  All that was taken care of by Electrolux and so any surviving examples still running today most probably don't contain a faulty motor.

I can confirm my DJ did not come with a bad motor. It's an early model, too, with the sand-colored PN and DJ sticker. As others have stated, I cannot believe that all of the motors were problematic.

I used to have a newer 1521 Ultralux (blue) that needed a motor, an Epic 2500 that needed a motor, and a 1205 that needed a motor. The Diamond Jubilee is still rocking, though (along with a Silverado and another Epic 2500).
