What is everyone's opinions on Dyson? I always thought they were kind of junky, but after looking at them at Sears yesterday, I think my opinion might be changing. I'm looking for an upright that is quiet, powerful, and lightweight. The DC 25 Ball caught my attention. I might be able to snag one off of e-bay that is in my price range. I hate to sound like an old lady, but I'm tired of lugging a heavy vacuum around.

I have a few Dysons (see pic :P ) and my experience with them has always been positive, I have had issues, but all were caused by myself abusing the machine and due to no fault of the machine or manufacturing process.

I don't own the DC25 so the best person to ask would be Jack (vintagehoover) as he owns it and highly recommends it.

I have the DC24 and love it, But the DC25 just adds more for your money :)

Excuse Mum's messy sewing room :P

Nice collection

That is an awesome collection. Mine absolutely pales in comparison. I've been using Dyson's for as long as they been around here in the states, and I have nothing but praise for these machines!

I don't own one, but about a week ago I tried out the model with air muscle. I was disappointed with it compared to the Kenmore I had just used. It was really heavy, took awhile to diced what level of carpet it was on, and cleaned more like an Elite with a really worn belt. But I've never been a fan of Dysons, and I've never recommended one to someone. (Mostly becuase they all have shag carpets!)

If you need a lightweightish vacuum, try the Hoover Tempo. It seems lighter than the dyson at Sears, but I don't know the exact numbers.

Good luck with your search!

Well

I just got a dc24 for xmas and I already love it mine does a great job at my cut shag ( medium pile ) carpet but it does not get the grit and its hose and cord are kind of short but I have herd the dc25 beats the carpet better and it has a longer hose and cord plus it has a larger dust cup

not for me

It is a personal opinion so please do not atack me for it. As far as the up right models go i can not realy say because I never used one. The canister models have a lot of negative points. The wand is far to short and to thick to be comfortable. The atachments break down real easy, but there service to replace broken parts is fantastic (a plus ;-)) Personaly I do not wish the service because for that kind of money it should not brak down. The cleaning of the filters are a nightmare as also emptying the can. Their design is nice but I think it is time for a change. Over here they cost about 300 to 400 euro's if you want some options. For that kind of money i prefer a Miele, sebo er even a second hand vorwerk.

Emptying the bin and cleaning the filters is an issue for you?

Please do share... I have never had a bad experience with either. IMHO it is much easier (and so much cheaper) to empty the bin every now and then and was the filter every few months as opposed to going vacuum bag shopping. Honestly, when I had a bagged machine it had the same bag reused over and over again.

I have also never had issues with anything breaking. Well, except for a turbine tool that was killed by abuse. :P

imacmacdaddy: No! That is a cool collection! I would kill for the blueprint and the DDM MH 22! :)

the collection is cool indeed.

Nothing wrong with the collection. The things I said above are not realy an isue for me because i do not use it daily. It is something I tried with the dyson dc 8 after getting a lot of complains of dyson owners. I do understand wat they meant. On internet market sides in holland there are a lot off them and it was tested very bad by the consumers company. It lost big time from a bad dyson copy made by philips. TO bad because I love the design.

"IMHO it is much easier (and so much cheaper) to empty the bin every now and then and was the filter every few months as opposed to going vacuum bag shopping."

Well, if you don't mind the extra work, then why not a 50-year old Kirby with a Sani-Emtor ;-). IMHO there is no economy, and no CONVENIENCE in a bagless vacuum. Watching the dirt swirl around inside a clear collection bin is a novelty, nothing more. Even with the bin empty, bacteria-laden germs can cling to the sides. Like Edgar said, I would rather put the money it would cost for a new Dyson to something better, like a refurbished Kirby Sentria.

'Well, if you don't mind the extra work, then why not a 50-year old Kirby with a Sani-Emtor'

Because the cloth bag will clog, and stay clogged. At least with a paper bag, you 'reset' performance each time you change it! Why not put a particle counter next to the 50-year old cloth bag while it's running, and let us know how much dust it's blowing straight back into the room?

'IMHO there is no economy, and no CONVENIENCE in a bagless vacuum.'

No consumables to buy, and no time spent buying them. No panic if you've run out of bags. I'd call that economy AND convenience.

'Watching the dirt swirl around inside a clear collection bin is a novelty, nothing more.'

No, it's the outer cyclone removing bulky debris from the airstream. The 'swirling' is integral to the function of the design.

'Even with the bin empty, bacteria-laden germs [care to explain that phrase?!] can cling to the sides.'

And I suppose the inside of a cloth outer bag, or hard bag casing, is totally, 100% bacteria free? Hate to disturb anyone's Howard Hughes complex, but everything, everywhere is crawling with bacteria! At least you can wash a dirt bin if you want!

bag shopping??

I love going shopping, when I have to shop for vacuum cleaners I love it even more. BUt If you did not like to go shopping for bags you would not have to. I do not know how it is over seas but over here you just put the bags on your shopping list and you can easely buy them with the rest of your household shopings that I do once a week.

You know Jack, every time I say something bad about Dyson, you have have to bash my comments. If you're so "pro-Dyson" why is your handle VintageHoover? You're cyclonic separation is not a perfect system, if it was, there wouldn't be a need for a pre-motor filter. As of now I will go on record as saying "I HATE DYSON!" He should've kept his machines on the other side of the pond....

Add to my last....

Isn't it MORE CONVENIENT throwing away a paper bag than having to empty (and wash out) a dust bin and have all the dirt and germs go back into the air???

What a very mature attitude!

- I question your comments, Karl. I don't 'bash' them. They're as easy to pick holes in as a 50 year old cloth bag! I must have missed the section of the forum rules which states 'Thou shalt never question the claims of Karl Weissert'.

- My handle is VintageHoover because they are my first and foremost interest. I didn't realise this was politics, and that I had to 'pick and stick' with one brand. I thought it was a forum for vacuum cleaner collectors. Sorry for the confusion.

- It's not 'my' cyclonic separation. I wish it was! That way, I'd be the billionaire!

- Good for you. I'm pleased you've felt able to come out of the closet about your vacuum-brand hating. What a worthy cause to rail against in this day and age!

- Nice to see that little dig at the English there - taking out me and Mr. Dyson in one swipe! You're quite the wit.

Oh Oh

I am sorry I said anything, lol. It was not my intention to start a discusion. If someone could arange me a pink dyson I will never say anything bad about it again lol.

I have no qualms with the English, quite the contrary, I do have qualms with a machine that is IMHO inferior for the price! If you really feel cyclonic separation does a better job of filtering small particulate matter, then PROVE IT! The dust bag is TIME TESTED, and until a system comes along that actually is better, it will continue to stay long after you and I are gone. You know as well as I do, cyclonic separation is a flawed system, Mr. Dyson hasn't gotten it right as of yet. No matter how many cyclones Dyson adds, it will still suck dust into the motor without a prefilter! You know it, Mr. Copp, and I know it!

Refresh my memory:

Perhaps you could show me where I claimed Dyson's system was perfect (as opposed to a valid alternative to a bagged system)? Just copy and paste the text, or provide me with a link, if you wouldn't mind?

Not entirely sure what the point of the video was; do you feel that an infomercial is an accurate representation of reality? Think David Oreck might be, in some small way, biased? Maybe prejudiced against rival brands?

Ok boys, play nice! :) I had a Kirby g4, always wanted one and then when I got it... ehhhhh. No big whoop. I found it cumbersome, heavy, and not very convenient to use. A great cleaner though, but lugging it up and downstairs was a chore. I gave it away to a member of the club when I moved. I purchased a Miele White Pearl from another member of the club, and love it, but again, not always the easiest to drag out for a quick clean. Its the downstairs vac and I'm looking for an upstairs vac. I have a Kenmore Progressive right now and its falling apart. I never liked this vac from the beginning. The Dyson caught my eye because, like I said, its fairly quiet, lightweight, has on board tools (forget about an Oreck for that reason) and would store in a small space in the hall closet. Just wondering if its more hype than performance.
