Dyson vs. Royal Everlast/Kirby

Hey Everyone,

I was just wondering what the common consensus was about Dyson vacuums. Are they everything they're cracked up to be?
Basically, I was wondering if they cleaned any better than a Royal Everlast or Kirby. In my experience, Royal Everlasts or Kirbys have for the most part cleaned and groomed the carpet the best. I'm not saying that some other cleaners aren't comparable, but how do Dysons perform against a Royal? Any input would be great!

Well, it's really hard to compare them. They're like apples and oranges. The design theory behind them is so different. Royals are my favorite vacuums, but after hearing people talk about the newer Dysons, I found a few and tested them out. I still am not wild about Dysons, but the newer ones are way better than the old ones. I can see why people like them.

I have one Dyson

and I really like it. It is a DC07 all floors I bought on eBay for $50. I have two cats, and it really seems to pick up the cat hair very well. I use it daily, and use my Kirby or Filter queen when I want to do a really good deep cleaning.

My dc18 has been daily for possibly years? A long time anyway, never a problem, very easy to handle, love the long hose.

I was going to say very much what Powertank did... you can't compare them, they are just two different "animals". Dysons don't claim to be powerful, they claim not to lose suction. I love my Dyson even though it has the awful clutch system and the dreadful telescopic wand, but if I wanted to get deeply embedded sand out of a plush carpet, I'd reach for the Kirby Sentria if those were my only two choices.

I have tried my Kirbys vs Dyson-for me the Kirby wins "nozzles down"!One of my Dysons came from a Kirby dealer as a trade in.A DC07 its wimpy brushroll just can't compare to the Kirbys.My other Dyson-DC25 Ball I think it is-again the Kirby does better-the later Dyson I have has a better brushroll-but whole house vacuuming with it-then go over the area with the Kirby and its dirtmeter-The dirtmeter pads get stuffed with mostly very fine dust the Dyson missed.And when I used my Dysons-dumpted the dirt cup between uses.Got LOTS of "Fluff" with the Dyson Ball-but VERY little finer dirt.

I'm with Tolivac, I have a DC07 and a DC24 (gave away my DC15 Ball animal), and thusfar every Generation Kirby except the Diamond G. I will agree the newer Dysons clean better, but I still prefer a Kirby hands down. The Dyson brushroll is too aggressive on carpets, that's why you will still see fluff in the bin even after the carpet has been thoroughly cleaned. Do I think the Dyson is overpriced? Absolutely! There are alot of other bagless machines that have the same cyclone technology for alot less. And why the high markup for a machine that's not even manufactured in the U.K. anymore? Just my two cents....

Why would you even bother trying to compare a Dyson to a Kir

That's like comparing a carpet shampooer to a vacuum cleaner and asking which one will leave carpets cleanest! It's obvious which one, but would you shampoo your carpets as part of your everyday clean up!?

They are completely different machines and which one is more useful and practical depends entirely on the situation.

Yes a Kirby probably does clean "the best" and is fine for a fit, healthy man in a sprawling American ranch full of wall to wall carpet so deep you could get lost in, spread out over a single story with large expanses of carpet to clean.

Try giving one to a little frail old lady to vacuum your average British home with a combination of short pile carpets and (increasingly more over recent years) bare floors. I wonder which machine would be "best" then!

That is a very good point! Also with a Kirby you have a given, they are very much alike??? Have only owned 4, so not sure, Dyson's line varies a lot and I am sure their cleaning ability does also. Wasn't going to throw this in the mix guys, but my dear friend has both, Kirby older red, very large head, they Dyson cleans up behind it, lots of sand and grit. There ya go.

I agree with Matt - the 2 are just incomparable.
When making such comparisons, you have to bare in mind the market to which both machines would sell to. Clearly, both have a market otherwise this conversation wouldn't exist. Not to mention, personal preference. You have to bare in mind, that Kirby retail for more than 5 times the cost of a Dyson (in the UK at least). Your average vacuum buying public, I would imagine, would find that an outrageous amount to spend on any appliance.

Now, take away the fact that people on here have the knowledge they do, and are enthusiasts for such appliances for a moment. The Dyson is a well known brand, it appears to do a great job, picks up everything off the carpet, easy to empty and very powerful. What more does your average vacuum buying public want? Why splash out £2000 on a Kirby, when you can get a Dyson for £200 that still does everything a person needs it to?

Now, any of you who have spoken to me know my feelings on Dyson (although, most of the time I don't get my point across very well) - PERSONALLY, I'm not a fan. I don't really like bagless vacuums. HOWEVER, if you want a bagless vacuum, there really is no other option. My feelings on Dyson machines are purely just personal dislikes, and in terms of performance, I can't fault them and there are many people out there who love their Dysons.

dyson advertises a lot in the media, that is how it became well known

kirby is from 50+ years of experience, word of mouth, and the demo

kirby is known for its quality and cleaning ability

I totally disagree with you there. As much as I have my personal dislikes about them, Dyson have proved to be a pretty reliable brand here in the UK, with many people still using 12 - 15 year old DC01's - I know of a number of people who still have these in daily use. I know a large number of people who are very happy with their Dysons and would, and have, recommended them to friends and family
