All done! The whole lot was washed, dried and polished. The machine is in really good condition, just sadly a bit faded (although seen worse etc). Certainly the best one I've had in my collecting lifetime!

Put it back together last night and here it is ready for a test drive tonight

Just need to get some filters for it, and have been tempted by a BNIB turbobrush... Will have to wait until payday for that though!

Look great, and nice to see the small tools all present and in such good nick. My guess on what happened with the bent end is that it was used regularly by itself to vacuum out a car, hence why it has worn down, and probably dropped a few times on a concrete driveway. They're still easy to find though, and even the generic ones are a close match to the originals.

I always had a soft spot for the DC02, so 90s and very much a product of its time. We sold an awful lot of them back in the day and they were generally well liked by users. Like most Dyson cylinders, the inner cyclone is rather short and the filters do tend to soil more heavily compared to the uprights. As long as they were changed frequently however, we really didn't see many problems with them.

Sure was nice having all the tools stored on board in a proper compartment, rather than awkwardly hanging off the machine or hose. The stair-hugging shape was a genius idea too, and something I wish they would bring back.

I dont quite know why they get such a bad rep, their powerful and compact! I'd be happy to sell this machine to someone who wanted a daily driver (with thin pile carpet) and trust it to do a good job!

But will keep hold of it for now!

The first time I saw one was an episode of Coupling where it was being used. The nature of the show meant it was portrayed as a high end product, rather than just 'a hoover'

Running mine without filters for now as I cant afford any. Sure it will be ok for a few uses, with no real dust to speak of!

Looks wonderful! You are always so thorough with your restorations.
I have always had a real fondness for the dc02 and its American counterpart. Out of all the foreign vacuums I have seen I think I want a nice dc02 the most.

Me neither! While it may not be quite as powerful as today's vacuums, it could be said that some modern cleaners are a tad too powerful, particularly if you attempt to use them on maximum speed while vacuuming carpet. Certainly it had adequate suction for the job it was intended, otherwise there would be none still in use. And when you think back to 15 years ago, when these were on sale, they held their own quite nicely against much of what else was available at the time.

If you still have the filters, don't be afraid to gently vacuum them off with a dusting brush and soak them in a warm solution of biological washing powder. Strictly speaking this is verboten, but as long as you don't scrub them or otherwise degrade the filtering material, they will quite safely tide you over in the meantime until a new set is on the cards.

I would love a Fantom Thunder! (PN DC02) ITs so genius!
The DC02 was a nice vacuum, massive though! I prefer the DC08 and DC05 (my fav Dyson cylinders) and when I first got my DC02, I was surprised that the suction was so good! I thought it only had 90 AW :/ Feels like it has more, like using a Henry (230 AW) but feels like DC07 suction (330 AW)
Anyways, the DC02 floor tool there, (the earliest one you have) it so good, it seals to the floor, has a metal soleplate, its really robust, (I think it is better than the Henry style floor tool!) and the velour strips on them never really do come off
Shame that the banana handles have a snapping problem!

Otherwise a great machine. TBH I think the DC05 is much more powerful, quieter, a better stair vac, but the Carry handles on the DC01 and DC02 machines are double layered to are very very robust and will never snap in even a commercial environment.

Trusty Dc02

My dad uses the same model as pictured in citroenbx's response. I got it off a neighbour, probably 13 years ago as they kept putting the yellow cone upside down in the clear bin.

Stick the filters in the washer. They wash well.

My dad's is used for the cars now really. He recently moved in to rented property and put all his belongings in storage, but took the DC02 with him. He soon took the other vacuum out of storage as he said the DC02 was a bit of a numpty to drag around. I totally agree. The hose on it is old and is kind of stretchy now, probably from being dragged up the stairs. The cord winder is knackered now too, so it's a bit of a fight to keep it extended.

I dislike the floor tool. It glides far too easily, however it does do the job. I also find it hard to switch it between settings, and i have big feet! I much prefer the one that didn't have any adjustment as it had a full length brush behind the suction channel that was in constant contact with the floor. A back breaker on linoleum though!

Your bang on about the floor tool! I've been using mine now its refurbished, and whilst it is OK on the laminate its crap on our rug! Just glides over picking only the lightest stuff up.

Its not the suction or airflow as that's quite good, just the floor tool.

But then again the DC02 for the laminate and a Turbopower for the rugs doesn't sound like a bad combo!

Filters are long gone now. New ones will be purchased at some point!

Perfect Mr. BX, perfect! I had assembled it correctly, I checked last night and it was the same way round as yours.

Suction from the tools is very good, the upholstry tool sticks to the stair carpet so I think it does work fine, and I'm just spoilt after a few years of 2200w straight suction, or the track marks left behind by turbopowers!

Ran it round last night and I agree with BaglessBall, it's a clunky old shed isnt it! Mine doesnt always hold the cord out too but I think the cord rewind is starting to go, and I'm not replacing that!

Will use it more over the weekend though, Its nice to use something (sightly) retro! Dont think I'll bother getting a turbo brush for it though, cant imagine their very good tbh!

Oooh is that a clear cable too? Its nice but I think mines repairable. It stays out if I don't pull it fully out, then a bit goes back in and then it stays!

My DC02 came with new ish tools too!
Mien cost £1.20 from eBay in September 2012. I miss it, it was a good vacuum to be honest, but I Prefer the DC01 as it was an upright and a childhood vac

How do you like the contact head? I have tried to hard to like it, I hate it!

It works really well in hard floors, but on carpet I feel it's over engineered jumping piece of crap.

Not as bad in open spaces, but to me it feel uncontrollable in tighter spaces.

I don't know how anybody like them.

I found the DC08 Contact head very god, well it is good on carpet and hard floors. It seals in all the suction into the carpet and does well. It has 2X red plastic bits underneath which can be opened if the suction is too strong. I have been using mine in thin carpets and honestly its great

That's a really good idea re the dc08 handle, but I think I'd rather have a DC08 as a daily driver than a DC02. I'd have to put a longer hose on the 08 though!

I do have a question about the DC02. I know the Fantom Lightnings are essentially a rebrand, but I wasn't sure what was different in them. Do they come apart just like the Dyson or are there sneaky bits that could be a little different. I'm assuming that because of the wiring for the Power Nozzle there will be slight differences, I'm just not sure where they would be.

Actually, there are major differences between the fantom and dyson. For one the Dco2 used the same electrostatic filters before and after the motor, plus the inner cyclone was large and had two entrances. The fantom has a smaller, single entrance inner cyclone that was less efficient and had no pre motor filter other than a screen. All of this was done by fantom to shorten the life of the post hepa filter and require more frequent replacement. The Dc02 in turn has better separation efficiency, better filtration, and better airflow.
Man, I really want a DC02!
