Dyson DC01

Adam, though it grieves me to say that someone is wrong, what has been said by Citreon is very wrong. I know for a fact that late production DC01 cleaners had fins on the cyclones, which is why I said so twice already. If I was in any doubt about it, I would never have said it. I saw them in the shops clearly enough, fins and all.

There were so many subtle changes to the DC01 that dating it is relatively easy. For instance, for many years the tools had the word DYSON printed in capitals and in the old font, long after the new lowercase 1996 logo was used. Later, the tools said 'dyson', this being around 1998, and later still the smaller tools were exchanged for the larger sets used on the Absolute cleaners.

The 13 amp plugs which were round in design were used from about 1996 up until around the end of 1999, but around 1998 the plastic earth pin was changed to metal.

The elasticated "doughnut" idea on the flex was invented around mid 1998 and was used on all new DC01 cleaners (and then later DC04), including those which went back for service. By the year 2000 Dyson were dispensing with the doughnut as it was causing too many new problems. Very late DC01 cleaners will have a square yellow Volex 13 amp plug and no doughnut.

Two more changes I forgot about. The upper cord hook was changed from a push-fit to one which was much more substantial and held in with a washer and screw. This was around 1998. Also around that time, a cord sleeve was introduced.

Adam, you cleaner seems to be dating to around the year 2000. The standard DC01 and DC02 were still in production for well over a year after the 04 and 05 were brought out to replace them respectively. They sold for a lower price than the newest models and in the case of the DC01 it served to be the none-brush control model which Dyson wanted at one time. It was only around the time that the DC01 was finally discontinued that the DC04 grey & lime was put on sale, despite the main DC04 models being introduced long before.

Production finally stopped either very late in 1999 or during the year 2000. I do not know exactly when it stopped, but what I do know is that the yellow & grey versions of the 01 and 02 were sold well into the year 2000. Like I say, by then there were numerous DC04 and DC05 models on sale, but the basic 01 and 02 were now the 'budget' lines. The DC02 at this time now had the 'new' Dyson-designed floor tool, the same as supplied with the DC05 and DC04 D/S.

By keeping the 01 and 02 going, it set a trend, as Dyson did the exact same thing when the 04 was phased out to make way for the 07, and again the basic 07 was on sale long after the DC14 replaced that range.
