Dyson DC01

After reading a few threads on here and general googling, I am rather confused.
Our DC01 has fins on the lower cyclone, yet there are so many without them. A few on Google also show the cyclone with fins,(think DC04).
Im just wondering why some have it and some don't, I don't think it's a replacement, that seems logical, could it be a later addition?

What do the fins achieve anyway, what's their purpose?

Fins

These were added in the very, very late production run of the DC01, I think around the time the DC04 went on sale. Even older cleaners which were sent back to Dyson for repairs under warranty were known to be sent back to the customer with a new inner section with fins.

I could be wrong, but I thought the fins helped to keep large solid debris in place and not go rattling around the cyclone tank.

The fins are designed to trap bigger bits of dirt I think - however that really annoys me as I prefer the DC01 lower cyclone which lets big bits of dust spin around.

The Lower Cyclone with fins was introduced on the DC04. The DC01, DC02 & DC03 had the Cyclone without fins.

The earlier DC01s ( the ones with the fixed soleplates) and the earlier DC01s (with the pivoting soleplate) didn't have fins in the bin on the lower outer cyclone well the 2 version I had didn't nor did my DC01 absolute come to think of it.

The purpose of the fins is to capture the large debris in the outer cyclone to improve collection and efficiency too I believe. Even Dyson's today have them but not as prominent as they use to be mainly as the bin capacity has reduced over time.

As I said already, the fins were added to the very last DC01 cleaners and also Dyson upgraded the cleaners which were sent back to them for repair. I am fairly sure this inner fixture we are talking about is the same size for the DC04 and of course it would have made much more sense to produce just the one part with fins to reduce costs. But the addition of the fins must have been significant if Dyson deemed it necessary to change the part on the cleaners which were sent in for repair.

Remember that production of the yellow & grey DC01 standard model continued well into the year 2000, some 18 months or more after the DC04 range was unveiled.

I read somewhere that the fins were added to force the dust to settle. This stops as much going through the shroud, which in turn means less dust for the inner cyclone to have to separate, which I imagine leads to less dust on the filter.

I'm sure the fin bin inserts were added to the DC01's when the DC04 was launched too. They are the same part. I think as the fins were added, so was a more secure inner bin seal, which had DO NOT REMOVE stamped onto it.

And the DC02 does have them, but they are smaller, and built in to the clear bin rather than the insert.

Yep, The DC05 has them in the bin and on the intert.
It's ironic as to why all Dysons have them apart from the DC03 :/
I found the DC07 fins did let the dust spin around for a while till you get a large fluff/dust ball.
Same thing with the DC01 and 04
The DC41 has 2 on the cyclone and if #I remember correctly a few on the flap

DC18 has fins sticking up from the flap at the bottom, DC38 doesn't have any but its so small the dirt hardly spins round anyway.

Yes, the fins where added when the dc04 came out, improving cyclone efficiency. It is only my dc01 abs+ that has fins on it as it has been serviced after 1999- infact after about 2002- as when it was serviced it had a square plug fitted rather than a circular one, along with a yellow bumper rather than a purple one and a set of yellow wheel covers rather than purple ones
I am currently trying to replace all the parts with the original ones, I have replaced the bumper, and the cord- however the cord is not purple but it still has the circular plug so I put that one on there!

Such good condition for the age. All original tools and labels. Few scuffs here and there, but nothing major, suction is as strong as new

Anyone able to date James?
Must be a later version I think

It would seem that James is a very very late model, so there's no way to date them other than if you find a date stamp somewhere on the vac

Well actually can can email Dyson the serial number and they should be able to tell you when it was made.
They did with my DC04, anyway

the dc01s with fins are what dyson put on later like when thay went in for service

when dc01s were made thay DID NOT HAVE FINS ON

Are you sure citroen? It was my late grandparents, I used to see them every weekend and clean up for them! I wasn't that young at the time, maybe around 8 or 9, they eventually bought a electrolux Powerlite as it was getting heavy for them.

I don't think James ever went into service for anything, so the lower cyclone must be original?
(see why I have named it that?)
