Disappointed in My Maytag 1200

I decided to do a version of the flour test to see how well my Sebo D4Premium, Maytag 1200, and Kirby Ultimate Diamond Edition deep clean. I have an area rug on top of carpeting that also sits on a rug mat that keeps it from moving around and bunching. I put some baking soda down on the rug mat below the area rug. The Sebo didn't get anything. The Maytag,got some, maybe half or less. And just in a couple of passes, the Kirby got it all. I tried the Maytag on different settings and it just didn't get much of the baking soda. The Kirby outperformed and I didn't have to go over it a lot of times. I thought given the Maytag has a direct air motor as well as very good agitation, it would be comparable to the Kirby. but that didn't happen. It failed miserably. My assumption is the Maytag just doesn't have the airflow of the Kirby. I don't know how much it has but it clearly isn't enough to clean down to the padding of my normal carpets. This is really disappointing. I feel like I paid $700 for crap. I really like the way my carpets look and I can tell it cleans them well but I suppose it just can't get below the carpet the way the Kirby can. Goes to show you can't beat a Kirby when it comes to deep down cleaning.

I am starting to get confused.

I am not trying to attack anyone, but am just getting confused when eight or ten posts are defending this machine, then telling it's shortfalls, then ripping someone for saying something different about it, then declaring it as crap. 


 


It is possible to have buyers remorse when spending a great deal of money on any item.   Though the "flour/baking soda" test is one test.  I think in the long haul you will find the Maytag / Tacony machines are very capable. 


 


In your findings you will demonstrate what we have been talking about with Kirby's "seal" on the carpeting which allows it to pull upward and allow airflow underneath.   Though the Maytag machine doesn't do the seal per se, it does have good agitation and air-flow. 


 


Besides if you vacuum regularly, there is little chance for dirt to migrate to the bottom of your carpeting, and hence, you will have a great machine giving satisfactory results. 


 


Quit torturing yourself.  Live with your purchase or return it.

For one, I don't recall ever "defending" the machine. No one has put it down so I would have no reason to defend it. I am simply reporting the pros and cons as I use the machine. That is how it works. You break it in and get to know the positives and negatives. If you don't like the posts may I suggest you don't read them?

I have no buyer's remorse, per say, but was very surprised at the result ass the machine came highly recommended. At least others that decide to purchase the vacuum can read through the posts and will have my perspective on the pros and cons.

Reviews are usually done in one cogent writing, Not scattered post.  Writers will usually gather their data, organize their thoughts,  and then present it in a succinct  manner.  If they have something to add they usually go back to their original post and add to that one under the heading of that machine.  What they don't do is create a new thread for each gripe and wonder.  As a paid member here I have the right to read or not any post there is.  I also have the right to respond to said threads if I wish.

Thank you for posting your results, I think that took some "guts" to do so. True deep cleaning requires insane airflow (think 120 nozzle CFM) and if that matters to you, you already know what works and works quickly.

But, the vast majority of the population doesn't care so much about removing dirt that's stuck way down in the carpet backing or in the pad below it, so typical visual tests suffice.

Your SEBO D4 Premium is advertised as having 120 CFM and that must be measured either at the canister base or just the raw motor spec (not inside the canister). Airflow losses in canisters are tremendous as they are inefficient by nature.

So, I guess your point is still lost on me. My point about the Maytag being a premium vacuum is he didn't list it as so but then listed Tacony. I was pointing out the discrepancy. I am so sorry I didn't conform to the way you post (note sarcasm). Again, I don't see what difference it makes. I skip over posts I am not interested in and you can do the same. Why even mention it to begin with? This is the first forum I have belonged where there are so many gripy and nit picky attitudes. In hind site, posting on one page probably does make more sense but that didn't enter my mind. I didn't realize there was a hall monitor.

Thanks Bill. I have read a lot of your posts and appreciate you explaining the science behind the process. I thought as much with the Sebo but expected more out of the Maytag. I was quite shocked as it agitates so well and dirt, dust, etc. is literally pulled in from an inch away. My Kirby doesn't do that. So I expected it to do the same on the powder test. For me, if it isn't deep down clean, it isn't clean. But I doubt my padding is very dirty. We don't wear shoes in the house, don't have animals, and I vacuum every other day. I also take my time vacuuming so I am sure there is minimal deep down dirt and overall, the Maytag is impressive but it does need some improvements. At least someone who is considering purchasing one can read my posts and make a more informed decision. I don't know if the tandem air is really as necessary as I thought it would be. Or perhaps a redesigned head may help with airflow. I am always thinking about what could be better. That is my process and, apparently, some people aren't interested in reading my thoughts. As I said, they are welcome to skip over them. BTW, I subscribed to your youtube channel and think your videos are really good. They inspired me to do the powder test which got me in a tizzy. Paying $700 for a vacuum, you expect better results. I guess Kirbys really are some of the best out there. Now if they weren't so loud and heavy. The first vacuum I fell in love with was the Heritage II. Just a small kid who couldn't even push it.

You did not say I was acting mature you said I am not mature enough to take your criticism. The fact is I don't have to take your criticism. I can post the way that works best for me. Just because you don't agree doesn't make you right and me wrong. And your job is not to critique my posts. Get something better to do.

Oh don't get your tampon sideways

Try your test with salt, or fine play sand.  It's texture is closer to grains of dirt you will find in household dirt, it is not as easily pulled through the  carpet weave, and not so clogging on the bag pores. 


 


The "sand test" is what we used to show in Kirby demos.  When you pull up an old carpet you don't find flour or baking powder under it,  you find sand.  Fine, fine sand.

On your Maytag--have you tried other nozzle height adjustments?Try that before condemning the vacuum.I got mine a few days ago-still trying it out.Few things I notice--the cord gets warm when both motors are going.And the blue lighted MO20R logo lights when the primary fan-brush motor is going.Like this.I also have a Maytag M500 like the Simplicity Freedon lightweight vacuum.

A lot of times, the BEST "report" is

from people who actually use a product. That's how you really know. Remember Hoover's saying, "Try it in your own home, in your own way".
I've had to use other makes at work, the church, rectories, etc. THAT'S how you really can tell. So, you're right in not defending, criticizing, etc..................
I never bash, (have BEEN bashed), but... I can/would give an honest opinion of any vacuum I've used, Hoover or 'others'. I don't need,want, own, etc others, BUT, I can see others' points of view on them.
I'll be a Kirby Sanitronic (OR) Dual Sanitronic {not sure which it is yet}. As I mentioned, I'm only keeping it because it is a GIFT to me from the sister of a very close, (now deceased) friend. I'm sure some will love it. I think it's a 1960--61 tan model. It'll be here at the next mini meet..whenever that it. I can comment on Hoover.... accurately, because I KNOW Hoover, inside and out. For any info I may not know, I simple check with Tom A. He has access to ALL correct, facts, at his fingertips, as he lives minutes from where it all happened.
