Difference(s) between Electrolux Grand Marquise and Legacy (both Model 1521)

Hello,

Since both the Electrolux Grand Marquise/1521 and Legacy Model/1521 were painted sand with blue-gray trim, and since neither came with a name label how can one tell the difference?

I know that the Legacy was made in different models, so I'm not talking about those. Just the original Legacy model 1521.

Interestingly, the Model 1521s that followed, the Ultraluxes, had the reverse colors; and at least one of them had textured chrome on the top rather than being painted.

If I remember correctly the only way to tell was the serial numbers. They had different letters but I cant remember what they were. Can anyone fill us in on this. Its a question I have been wondering about too.

I was curious about this, too, so I contacted Aerus. Here is what I was told:

The prefix and suffix are unique to each model. The Grand Marquise models typically have the prefix M and the suffix F. The metal Legacy canisters typically have the prefix M and the suffix L.

Incidentally, the Grand Marquise was manufactured around 1989 to 1990, and the Legacy was manufactured around 1991 to 1992. They are, indeed, identical. The Ultraluxes came afterward. All were Model 1521 versions except the plastic-bodied Ultralux.

While the Diamond Jubilee (the first of the Model 1521s) had a white hose with jade (dark green) colored chevron tracers and the next unit, the Marquise, had a white hose with taupe-colored chevron tracers I believe the rest of the 1521s had the same hose as the Silverado/model 1505: a white hose with blue chevron tracers. I'm not certain about the Ultralux Commemorative Edition though.

I am also uncertain what the original power nozzles were for all versions of the 1521s. It seems that the DJ had the sand-colored PN-5 (with jade-colored background on the nameplate), the Marquise had the PN-6A with the taupe trim, but the others may have had the 1622 and 1692 (sand-colored with blue trim) or others.

The economy counterparts to the standard 1521s were the sand/jade Model 1453 (DJ), the sand/jade L-E/model 2100 (DJ), the sand/taupe L-E/model 2100 (Marquise) , and the sand/blue Ambassador III (model unknown; Grand Marquise, Legacy, Ultralux LX, Ultralux Classic, Ultralux Commemorative Edition).

The plastic-bodied Ultralux (model unknown)--without a suffix or classification--was marketed in stores or catalogs.

The Silverado & Silverado Special had a light gray hose with dark gray chevron-patterned tracing, not white/blue.

Regarding the color of the Silverado hose thanks for the clarification. I used to have a Silverado, and its hose looked white and blue to me. However, it may have been a replacement hose.

Sometime I'd like to see a thread of close-ups of all the Electrolux braided hoses to use as a reference. Here's my feeble attempt to compare the Silverado hose with the Ultralux hose:

Ok - new mystery here - I just got a Grand Marquis or Legacy given to me - serial number is M01502B - Anyone have any idea if its a GM or a Leg????

The grand marquis used a pn-6 where as the legacy introduced the newer style ( can't remember the model), it was the same style used on the first ultralux which had ultra lux printed on the back of the machine and was not a sticker.

I know that between my ultralux LX and ultralux classic they redid the pivot assembly for the classic (blue hood nozzle) so that in the upright position the wand leans forward more to prevent tipping.

Unfortunately the power nozzle with this machine isn't original at all so that doesn't tell me anything

Just to throw out a different idea - If we assume that they just continued the serial numbers would it not make sense that it would have started with M-----A and continued at least through M-----L or more. In that case a M01502B would be a fairly early number which would make this a Grand Marquis.

Re: The sequential serial prefixes/suffixes on Electrolux machines your conclusion is logical. However, it seems to me that Electrolux did not always use serial letters sequentially. I would suggest contacting Aerus to see if they can help. I have given them serial #s before, and they have identified the year of production. While I don't recall which machine info. I gave, I think the company's records go back to the 1980s. Let us know what you find out.

Regarding power nozzles I wonder if these were the ones for the Grand Marquise/1521 (Model PN-6A) and the Legacy/1521 (PN-1751)? The lighted ones did not make their debut until the Ultralux LX. I believe they would have updated the black (or jade?) PN-6 used with the later Diamond J/1521s with the PN-6As, but I may be mistaken.

I also wonder if the Legacy/1521 and Ultralux/1521 were factory-paired with PN-7s as some of the plastic tanks had PN-7Bs. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to locate a photo of a PN-7 (the last of the single-digit PN model #s).

Yes that's them!! The first nozzle belonged to the grand marquis and the second one was introduced on the legacy then to become the first ultralux. The PN 1751 had a different base plate compared to the pn-5,6. Although lux did continue to use that hood from the grand marquis for the central vac with the base plate of the 1751.

Yep I knew about the different power nozzles but this machine didn't have the original one with it so no way to tell

Ok-Doug. I went back to your reply (#7) and saw that you weren't searching for the original power nozzle but just trying to determine the name of your tank. Hopefully, Aerus will be able to tell you. If you check out my reply (#2) above you'll see that I contacted them about the serial ids (which I'd forgotten), so now I'm more confident that they will have the information.

Hi guys:

Finally found a way to tell the difference between the Grand Marquis and the Legacy. The Light Grey plastic on the ends (Cord reel and bag cover) on the Grand Marquis is smooth. When the Legacy was brought out it was changed to a patterned plastic that matched the body. I had never noticed it till I actually had two of them side by side.
