I'm surprised no one has brought this up yet. In my state of Oklahoma only three people have tested positive. My college extended spring break for a week and cancelled classes. Events are being cancelled, people are going crazy and hoarding toilet paper. Thankfully, I have enough however I'm still afraid to walk into a store and see the isle empty.

I'm not afraid of getting it myself if that were to happen. I'm healthy and recover quickly from colds and the flu. I'm concerned about getting COVID-19 and spreading it to people who are older such as my grandparents . I'm also concerned about the viruses overall impact on the economy.

I hope people are taking personal responsibility for themselves and staying home if sick and not spreading it to people who have compromised immune systems. This virus could be fatal to them.

Any other thoughts? I plan on traveling soon and taking a bottle mixed with bleach and water since I'm assuming I can't buy disinfectant in the store and wiping down all surfaces in my hotel room. The virus can live on plastic for days. Not to a foreign country just a neighboring state.

The world is going crazy. The photo below is of the toilet paper aisle at Ralph's at 10 PM last night. You'll notice a lot of yellow sale tags at the edge of the empty shelves. Now I gotta ask you... what is the point in putting something on sale that people are hoarding???

All the eggs were gone. All the milk was gone. Most of the canned and frozen goods were gone. Most of the bread was gone.

This is insanity.

There are some kind souls among us. When this all started and there was no hand sanitizer to be had, I went to Walgreens for some 90-proof isopropyl alcohol and aloe vera gel to make my own. There was =no= alcohol on the shelf of any strength. I mentioned this to one of the employees there. He said "Wait here a second." He disappeared into the back and returned with a large bottle of 90X alcohol for me. He said, "This is from my private stash." I thanked him and said, "You're a very decent person."

@countryguy LOL! Good one! I will say, though, that some people will have stomach problems with the virus, so the trots are not off the table. That being said, I still don't really get why people are hoarding TP. Or water for that matter. Food, I totally understand.

Virus

Yes,there is a problem that requires us to continue reasonable caution as in previous years and flu seasons.
But now people may get sick!People may die!!What should we do?!?What would our president and the millions who are very, very, deeply concerned with our health do if they found out that CIGARETTES CAUSE CANCER?!?!?!
Small world--I know 2 local people on the quarantined Japanese cruise ship. Both well and home. When I walked to the local grocery store last night I found 98% toilet paper GONE and joined in the hoarding by getting 2 packages.

Toilet paper and now other items

It’s a snowball effect. Two weeks ago we used up the last of our bulk pack 30 rolls of toilet paper, so I bought a new one...should last the 2 of us for another 15 weeks as we use about 2 rolls a week. But then the nuts started hoarding it so we said well, what if we use up ours and there’s no more in 15 weeks, I guess we should get some now. So we bought two more bulk packs. We can share it with our niece as she has kids and is usually strapped for cash so she wouldn’t have money to « stock up and hoard » so at least we have some for her if she runs out soon and can’t find any if people are still hoarding it. I did buy 4 bottles of rubbing alcohol to use with paper towels to make sanitizing wipes if needed. 4 would be plenty I figured. Now people are hoarding food and why? Do they think we are going to have no food or something or that tons of sick people will be shopping in the food stores? It is a bit crazy. At first I wasn’t going to bother getting the extra toilet paper but when we saw it sold out and did come across a store that had it we figured, well, just get it to be on the safe side and we can share it if needed. So the hoarding by others created a snowball effect, We bought more that we didn’t need now out of fear since we were suddenly seeing the shelves empty. Though by the time we will need it, likely the stores will have all restocked as the hoarding phase will be over.

But this greedy over hoarding is bad for people who don’t have the money to stock up on things as now, they won’t be able to get the things they usually get once a week as tit will be sold out sitting in the hoarders fridges, spare shelves, and garages. This is why we figured we would share the extra toilet paper if needed. We could afford to buy the bulk packs when our niece can’t as she rents from us and can barely afford to get us the rent but we know she tries hard

It is disgusting that there are a few 'entrepreneurs' (and I use the term loosely) that are buying up all the toilet paper, paper towels, sanitizer, etc. and then selling it on amazon, etc. at several times the original price. They are trying to make money off this situation. I bet they aren't reporting their income to the CRA or IRS though.

The hoarding is disgusting

I went down to the local supermarket last night to buy three items. I couldn't believe what I saw. Every register had a line of people with over flowing carts that extended to the back of the store. As I walked down an aisle my jaw dropped and I was shaking my head in dis-belief. I got the last lb. of butter and one of three remaining gallons of milk. All canned tuna was gone, all top ramen noodles gone. Bread gone. I needed a can of kidney beans, and this guy was pulling every can of beans off the shelf into his cart. I went over and said could I get just one can of the kidneys please and he begrudgingly handed me one can without looking at me, just said "here".As far as running out of toilet paper to do the paper work, I can just go back to what mom used on us with dirty diapers,WASH CLOTHS! If you have the trots the clean up is better anyway with wash cloths than t.p.

It is a snowball effect. I wanna know why people are stupid enough to be hoarding easily perishable food like milk and eggs. What the hell are they thinking? I better have a fridge full of milk to last me the whole year! It doesn't work that way! Milk goes bad in a month. People are stupid.

Like, canned food is totally understandable. If it's the apocalypse, you'll have food for years and years. Toilet paper, too... I guess. Priorities, amiright? Whatever.

Anyhow, I'm a little bit germophobic and this situation is making it worse. I wanted to get some hand sanitizer but naturally there's none to be had. So I made my own with alcohol and a bit of glycerin. And hey, there's no alcohol either.

I reply:
That's the thing. People are taking on an apocalyptic mindset. It's gonna get weirder before it gets better.

The college where I teach has spent the whole weekend issuing contradictory statements. At first, everything was going to be on a normal schedule this coming week and then shut down the following week. The logic, if you want to call it that, is it would give faculty time to prepare to transition from classroom to online instruction. WTF? I don't need a week to do that. I can move my classes online in a couple of hours.

Then last night, after the governor ordered all K-12 schools shut down for the next two weeks, they reconsidered and suspended all classroom instruction, effective immediately, except faculty and staff still need to report to work. Like there's actually anything I can do in my office under theses circumstances that I can't do just as effectively--and more safely--from home? As a diabetic, I do fall into a 'high risk' category, so I can seek an alternative arrangement from HR, which I may well do when I get to work in the morning.

But I'm still not hoarding toilet paper!

I totally agree!

Generally, I buy t.p., paper towels, bleach, laundry detergent, etc. about twice a year.. I looked in both bathrooms and the linen closet. I'm fine.

(this was to clear up space AND for my aunt to not cook much)... I just made: stuffed shells, 41 meatballs, 2 kinds of lasagna, etc. to "have" and to free up space in my kitchen. At times, if I get free time, I go on cooking jags, lolol.

I'm not going to live in fear. All schools are closed, our diocese "relieved anyone from the obligation of Mass". We must be careful, not reckless OR just plain stupid.

Well here in Illinois, Schools have been closed through the end of the month as well as all bars and restaurants. The stores are wiped clean and now I'm concerned about how I'm supposed to eat for the next 17 days...

Well

We're closed for the rest of the month (schools, some businesses, etc.). We're ok as far as food (and still have TP to spare!). We don't need much. I feel that we MIGHT be over exaggerating a bit. Yes, I know there are ever-increasing cases and some have died, but statistically this is nowhere NEAR the high numbers that Influenza kills off in a year. Just saying, it's pretty stupid how a lot of people are acting.

I have to go in to the college,

but no students.
The huge King of Prussia Mall was FORCED to close! yikes!
I was at the supermarket today. It was a surreal scene.
A lot of businesses are suffering. Broadway and Radio City Music Hall are dark. All of the museums will take a hit, too.
Afterall, all of those bus tours, etc. will be awful.

The situation is the same here in the UK. I went into ASDA on my way to work this morning as I always do on a Monday to get milk and biscuits for the office where I work. Usually there are about 10 cars in the car park and at that time in the morning only the self scan checkouts are open. 7:15 and the car park was 3/4's full. A queue of over 20 people waiting to self scan and a few manned tills open. Empty shelves of pasta, loo roll, tinned tomatoes and veg, tea, of course no soap or sanitiser that disappeared weeks ago. Guy in front of me buying 5 packs of spaghetti and paracetamol. It was an uneasy feeling being in there surrounded by these crazy selfish shoppers. Having said that the roads seem quieter so think more people are working from home than before. Can't see it getting any better anytime soon. I bet the Supermarket accountants are loving it!!

Okay, so I've been sitting here in my office all day, waiting to hear from HR about my request to work from home, and have gotten absolutely no response. Kinda frustrating, since there's nothing I can do here that I can't do at home, except for occupying this particular space. Kinda frustrating. If I were more paranoid, I could delude myself into believing they're intentionally ignoring my request.

Shortly after writing the above post, I finally got through to HR and they told me they were putting my name on the list. The whole time, I got the impression they thought I was already working from home and weren't terribly concerned whether I was at home or at my office. Afterward, I e-mailed my supervisor, related the gist the conversation and told her I'd be working form home, pending further word from HR. She was totally supportive and probably relieved that someone had taken a decisive action today.

This whole thing is disturbing

I mean, in the past, I've watched some truther videos of people warning us about such a thing........most people (including me) thought something could happen, but I generally shrugged it off thinking that the world is supposedly ending for decades now....and nothing ever happens. Well, no one is laughing at them now. I'm not sure what to think because no one I know knows anyone who is sick or even been tested for this. They are going to start putting armed guards at the hospitals. It's total Twilight Zone. I keep hoping this will blow over and all will be back to normal but so much damage is being done each day.

whatever you do, don't go down some of the rabbit holes I went down on Bitchute...there are some CRAZY theories out there!

About hoarding perishable food. Yeah! Isn't that stupid? That's why we only buy non-perishable things at Costco like toilet paper, detergent, shampoo ,razors...things like that.

This is not like common flu

Everyone needs to be cautious of this virus old and young. The UK has become a different place in a space of 10 days. Birmingham has become a ghost town. Its like nothing we've ever experienced before. Stay safe, avoid contact and cross your fingers you don't get it. Can you imagine not giving your Mom a hug on Mothers Day, Instead having a conversation through a closed window and leaving a card and flowers at the doorstep. Well that's what happened last Sunday. If I am a carrier of it? I don't know yet, then I would never forgive myself if I passed it onto my parents. This is not like the common flu. Avoid getting it so you don't spread it to others and infect them.

It is way to close to home now. We have a confirmed exposure here in Bridgman Michigan where I live. Keeping in mind that exposure doesn't mean that the person actually has it. They were just in a distance of another person that is either a carrier or has it. I have not heard anymore since this broke two hours ago. With that being said. I have done everything I need to do. I am well stocked up with groceries. I have everything I need for work. I have TV, Internet, books and plenty of housework and unpacking to do. I have kept myself within only certain people who pose no risk and nobody else.

It took being here in Michigan before my mom finally got serious about this. My younger sister Tara who works in a nursing home told my mom she needs to get serious. Berrien County has had to declare a State of Emergency.

I was working on a project with my boss for reopening the restaurant. I wanted to do some research and have some kind of date before I submitted my thoughts. With in a one hour driving distance radios there are 44 confirmed cases. This is Berrien County and Van Buren County Michigan. This includes Saint Joseph County, LaPorte County, Lake/Porter County Indiana. I don't know what to think. Would this seem like a lot? Or is this a small number? Chicago is only a hour and half two hours from here. They have just over 1,500 cases. I was okay with the 44 cases, really uneasy having one right here in the same town I live in. But knowing the number in Chicago regardless of the fact that Chicago is shut down is just scary now.

The strange thing is that I am more concerned and scared for my boss. I'm scared about watching all the hard work she has done for the last year going down the drain. I am so afraid of watching something I have worked so hard to help create go down the drain. That would just be completely devastating.

How is everyone else doing?

Andy

College Student Here

We had an extra week of spring break and all classes will be online once break ends. There are many arguments going around whether University Of Illinois should refund tuition or just give everyone passing grades for this semester.

The community college where I teach is completely online for the remainder of the semester and campuses are being locked down as of 5:00 p.m. today. No word yet regarding the summer session, although I strongly suspect that will be online as well. No tuition refunds or automatic passing grades. I'm sure I'll be giving F's to quite a few students who have let their coursework go since the campuses were closed. Many mistakenly think they're on vacation. Graduation fees have been waived for students earning their degrees this spring and summer since commencement exercises have been canceled. No word as to whether or when it will be rescheduled. Meanwhile, there is nothing to be done except hunker in the proverbial bunker and move forward as best we can.

my two cents

I will be working from home for the next few weeks, I don't mind doing that, it means I can sleep in a bit later. In some ways I like it better because I don't have to hear all of the other conversations like I do when I'm at work. I think when this is all said and done, the panic that people had from this will have caused more problems than the virus itself. Ten years ago, the H1N1 flu killed more people tthan this.
The most I stock up on is maybe a few weeks worth of items which is what I would do anyway. Buying months and months worth of toilet paper and other items is just pointless. I agree that a lot of this panic is caused by the government and the media.
Here's the biggest thing that concerns me. We have state governors and local mayors issuing orders that nonessential people must stay at home and that businesses and eating establishments must close. Ok, so who determines what is essential and nonessential? The government? This is the kind of thing that happens in communist countries. Anyone who is concerned about our liberties and freedom should be very concerned about this. When this is over, can the government tell businesses they must close for other reasons? In my opinion this is going too far and many small businesses will be destroyed because of it. This is one of many examples of how the government is abusing its power. And now we have passed the largest spending bill in history to help these businesses because the government ordered them to close. Very flawed logic in my view.

Pretty sure I've got it.

Been sick as a dog the past two and a half days. Feeling better today, no fever, good appetite. I had all the symptoms: fever, dry cough, shortness of breath, aches, discomfort. My mom and dad and one sister have it as well. Strangely, my sister that does NOT have it, is the one who's a nurse in a hospital dealing with infected people!

My dad had a fever on tuesday, but he was fine the next day. Then I stated coming down with a fever thursday night. Saturday, my dad started getting sick again, now on sunday he's got a fever again, but everyone else is doing better. Dunno what's that about.

My dad tried to get tested today, but they ran out of tests like as soon as they opened. He's gonna try to go super early tomorrow morning.

'This is not the flu' Well here's my thinking on that. What I had is pretty much just the flu... but much more annoying and more contagious. I was pondering the situation in my feverish delirium, and it occurred to me that under these strict quarantine and lockdown conditions... a strong strain of the virus would infect a couple people and then they'd get isolated. Whereas a weak strain might give someone the sniffles and it wouldn't be taken as seriously, and therefore would have more opportunity to be communicated to other people. With that logic, it makes sense why I got off pretty easy.

As for all these lockdowns and such... yeah it's ruining US. But yeah it's necessary. But also, yeah, it needs to end. Soon. There is a point where we won't be able to bounce back from this.
