Canister Vs. Upright

I was raised on canister vacuums. First was the
Electrolux 30, then a Lewyt big wheel, then Eureka....
all canisters. I could never adjust to using an upright.
Since 1992, I have not had a stitch of carpeting.
In New York City, I had hardwood floors, then in Palm Springs, California and now Tucson, Arizona, only ceramic tile floors.
I guess I am a "dyed in the wool" canister person.

How long ago did you live in Palm Springs? We had a Kirby 562 growing up. My parents didn't even have carpeting when they bought it. I always joke that that was one good saleman. Anyway, it always had the hose on and attachment box handy. We did eventually use the carpet nozzle when we got green shag wall to wall!

Years later in the 70's my parents came home with a Eureka Empress II. You would have thought it was for me by the way i reacted to it! LOL! What a convenient machine! Tools on the top. Separate wands for the PN and the floor tool! Large dust bag! I was hooked on Canisters since!

Upright family here i'm afraid, we had a dyson DC02 but we've predominatly been with uprights..

the chronology goes as follows if I recall correctly..

Hoover Senior (turquoise or something, had a internal cloth bag)
Electrolux 502S
that Vax upright that was recalled due to faults
Electrolux Contour, the green one
Dyson DC02
Electrolux "the boss"
and now, a morphy richards lightweight cyclonic upright thing..

I was born and raised in New York City (Bayside, Queens).
My late parents started spending their winters in Palm Springs in the mid '80's at which time I started spending my winter vacations in Palm Springs. Bought condo at
2367 S. Gene Autry Trail in '93 which my parents had rented every winter for many years. After my mom died in '94 and my dad in '97, it was time for a new life so I moved to California in Nov '97. Transferred my job to Los Angeles but spent time off in Palm Springs. Quit my job in Sept. '98 and stayed full time in Palm Springs until I moved to
Tucson in Jan '05. I like it in Tucson and hope to stay here.

I am an upright person-Grew up with a Kirby 511.Was lost in a flood in 1972,was running perfectly at the time-that vac went thru a lot-Was bought in 1951,my dad used it to spray laquer on a wood panelled wall during house remodeling-He lived in Ohio at the time-He sent the machine back to Kirby(My Mom says she was livid at him for using the Kirby as a paint sprayer-Dad bought an air compressor after that)The Kirby was cleaned up and rebuilt by the Kirby folks.My stepmom was canister person-when my Dad married her she had a "Wheelbarrow" Kenmore canister-That was the first canister machine I used.For many years the Kirby and Kenmore worked together.Used both at that point.Now I use both types of machines-A Kirby Sentria and a Meile cainster.My Stepmom hated the Kirby-She would always say-"I want an Electrolux!"as she used the Kirby.She also used her Kenmore canister.

I have not had carpeting since 1992, but when I did, I used
Kenmore canister with power-mate attachment and it worked
great.

upright family

Hey, I'm new here.
Upright familly.
Started out with a Turbopower u2332, then a Panasonic MCE-44, then a Kirby ledgend 2 and the Panasonic on it’s own for a while, then a blue Argos-budget Hitachi Powerhouse, then a Panasonic MCE-468 and now a Samsung Upright Jetpropel thing.

My Dad has usually had both an upright and a cylinder. When my parents split up, he bought a second hand Turbopower U2194 and an ancient metal Henry - before it was a Henry. Then he bought a Neptune aqua cleaner...uses water instead of a bag. Brilliant vacuum just a pain in the arse to clean out. Then a very brief spurt with a Turbomaster followed by an Autosence and now he has a Panasonic Icon MCE-583 and a Lux Boss cylinder B113 i think it is.

My Sister had a Hoover Sensotronic S3450, an orange Convertible and a Delonghi Combi 800 in her student house when she was in uni and then when she finished and moved back up here, she got a Sharp 1500w thing - in green - Panasonic-esque thing, which didn't like her loop pile so she bought a Goblin Scoot which she killed whilst decorating and now has a Vax Swift Turbo.

My Grandparents had a 502, replaced by a 610 and an Aquavac Super 30 and then a Dyson DC04 which they still have.

My other Grandparents had a Junior Delux right up to about 1995 ish when they bought a Turbopower U2798 and recently a Domotec folding thing.

I could go on forever with this. Basically, my family have had every "middle-of-the-road" vacuum you can imagine.

As for the guy who has the Morphy Richards upright bagless thing - SHAME ON YOU! I hate those things.

I never use it, it just seems too flimsy..and as for the noise it gives off..

You'll normally see me using my lux 502, my lux 504, maybe my junior, maybe my dial a matic..sometimes my kirby...

If there's one thing I stand for in this world it's quality product heh

Hi there. I too am relatively new to vacuums. I have been more into washing machines and am in automatic washer.org
(see link). I am going to stick with modern vacuums because I have a large collection of vintage washers. I never learned how to fix them but have a great mechanic. Only thing is that he is slow and currently has 3 of my washers in the repair shop. When he brings those back, I have another 3 to go to the repair shop. Having enough with repairing washers, I do not need vintage vacuums waiting for repairs.
I am still enjoying the Hoover Constellation. Do they sell those in the UK?

I mainly showed you the pic to show you how the Maytag Satellite is such an insult to Hoover ;p

Friggin joke, ya see the problem is that Maytag (and therfore Techtronic Industries) own the Constellation name (but seemingly not the design) whilst Candy (an italian 'elettrodomestici') does not..thus, we get lumped with the name "Maytag Satellite" which imo just isn't the same regardless of design.

Hi Ian. The name Maytag in the US is just not what it used to be. First, Maytag was making lousy machines before Whirlpool took them over. Now Maytags are better quality but they are Whirlpools or as we say, "Whirltag". I am posting a picture of new Whirltag washer that I got a month ago.
All in all, a Maytag just is not what it used to be.
