Okay, okay, okay...I have to show mine now! Mine is not in very good shape. However, thanks to Jeff Parker it now wears an original bag. I like this shade of blue!

It's Cleaned Up

I finally finished the Blue Hoover. I cleaned and lubed the brush roller. Used Magic Eraser on the scuffs and Windex on the base, Hood and underside. I installed a fresh belt as the original was oblong. A new inner bag is in place, and lastly taking a cue from one of Tom Anderson's posts, I soaked the bag in my sink using Xtra (my favorite cheap laundry detergent).

Let me know how it looks now.

Lovely job!! It's a real satisfaction, isn't it, after a successful restoration to sit back and admire your handiwork. Then to plug the "new" machine in and let it do its thing is even a greater satisfaction! Thanks for sharing your success with us!

Yay! It looks way better now, ready for another 30 years of service

BTW I tried the dollar store generic magic erasers at 2 for a buck and they work just as well as the Mr.Clean ones at more than twice the price.

Yeah, Debbie!!!!

You are a pro! This machine looks great now. Best of all, it will outclean many new machines AND use far less electric AND it is way more fun to use. Let me know what you think about the tools on this one. Thanks too for taking the time to post photos of your success.

Thank you for the encouragement. I am pleased with this one and it is my favorite upright. It was great to re-assemble it and put it to work. Sounds so strong and works like a charm. The hardest thing about this was putting a new belt on, it took several days of tugging to stretch it and get it on, then once it was assembled, I was so excited to try it out. I vacuumed away, but wondered why the heck once I turned it off it shot backwards toward me...silly me...in my hurry to play, I had forgotten to put the bottom plate back on.

Tom,

I didn't get to try the tools with it yet. I assembled it late last night. I spent quite some time searching for the bolt to the back of the bag, which I put aside, and I believe I sucked up with another Hoover. Then I took the bag of that Hoover and cut the top off thinking I would search the dust for the bolt, but...YUCK, the thought of me sifting through a packed "A" bag of someone else's dirt just skeeved the heck out of me, so I tossed it and took a bolt of my other Hoover. I am going to try the tools this evening after dinner.

Pete,

Thanks for the tip on the dollar store magic erasers, I will give them a try as I foresee myself going through a lot of these. They are great though, I used them on some scuffs on my wall and it worked like, well, magic. I will always refer to these as Pete's Magic Eraser, since you are the one who told me about them.

Charles - Richard,

Yes it is very satisfying indeed to put it all back together, look at the before pictures, and then to fire it up and enjoy the performance. What fun! Much better than anything comparable today. I would take this over a Dyson any day.

I'm still sorry I let my mint green Convertible and the medium blue Handi-Vac get away, but this was before my collecting. My non-collector brother has the same blue Handi-Vac hanging in his garage. I'd ask him for it, but the state of my collections is a sticky point in the family. Enough of that, Debbie, your pretty blue Convertible is a real prize. It came out beautifully, and I can't wait to see that Constellation again!
