You're completely not listening to anything I'm saying, are you?

For the THIRD time - I'm not annoyed because I wanted it. I am annoyed that it's leaving the country, when so many British collectors wanted and deserved it. If you'd actually read anything I'd said, you'd know that.

Also, if you don't like what I'm saying, don't read it. I've expressed an opinion, and I'm sorry, but it's tough if you don't like it.
 
I think you're just over reacting, I'm sure that there have been many thousands of vacuums leave the UK destined for the US bought by US collectors, this is just one of many, you had a chance to buy it, you missed the chance, and now it's leaving to start a new life in the US, with someone who will no doubt cherish it for as long as they have it...

Think of this as a life lesson, cos life's a bitch...
 
Collectors, collectibles, and liquid capital do not know any borders. They just move around and a dotted line on a paper map means nothing. At one time when the US dollar was king, collectible cars were leaving Europe in droves. Now, the flow is back the other direction with Germans and Russians snapping up fancy collector cars at US auctions. And of course removing them to their home countries.

How about this one? People have been spiriting antiquities out of Egypt for thousands of years! It's still happening. During the recent unrest in Egypt, stuff disappeared from museums.

This Hitachi was listed on an online auction site with a buy-it-now price or make offer; did I read the details correctly? If so, why did not one of you Brits who are offended buy it? A buy-it-now can be bought any time, can it not, so auction time wasn't an issue was it? I don't see the disadvantage issue here.

The north American buyer certainly is going to pay well for this, in spite of the relatively low sale price. His cost of shipment is going to be significant. This fact should give him some standing as a buyer of some serious and abiding interest. Oh, the part about "what happens to it when he dies." You cannot be serious. A Hitachi vacuum cleaner isn't quite an national treasure objet d'art.

At one time, Hitachi was the brand of preference for me when I was in the market for electrical or electronic goods. I've had Hitachi TV's, radios, (still have one), refrigerator, fan, electric power tools and I don't remember what-all. Unfortunately, I haven't had the experience of using one of their vacuum cleaners but if it's like the stuff they used to make (in Japan), it's probably good.

Regardless of the above comments, I am still annoyed. I still stand by my feelings that this should rightfully stay in the UK and still don't believe any of the UK fans were given a fair shot at this.

At least one UK collector did get a crack at this, and that was me. I looked at it, but as it was not a "must have" for me I decided to watch it whilst I made up my mind if I could make room for it - as this is a constant problem for me with getting on for 200 cleaners in my small home.

It was certainly cheap enough and close enough that I could even have collected it.

When I looked back at it a couple of hours later it was sold, and not at the buy it now, although, in fact, I am not entirely sure that this was not the second time round for this machine anyway.

That the seller accepted the offer was their choice and at least they were open about their willingness to accept offers - how often have you been watching an item and suddenly it ends for no reason at all, long before the end of the auction.

This machine is going to end up where it will be appreciated, it could have so easily have gone to the dump instead. And, one thing that 10 years of ebaying has told me is that there are VERY VERY few cleaners that do not come up again at some time or another, so if you miss one (as I have, more than once) there will be more.

I gotta say Chris, as your friend, It's fine asking what would happen to the vac when Bill dies however, that's the same with every other collector, regardless of where they're from. To us, such a rare specimen as this Hitachi is like gold! to the rest of the world, it's just an old vacuum cleaner and unfortunately, it will almost inevitably end up in a landfill. I understand how you're upset as this same kinda thing has happened to me before, bidding on rare Numatic machines only for them to go to kids caught up in a passing fad :P but, shit happens. I think Ryan Campbell was bidding on the Numatic David that I eventually won, which while ever I feel terrible about, he and I agree, it's only fair and being the great guy Ryan is, he didn't get too annoyed :)What I'm saying is, vacs come and go, there are thousands in the world plus, I know you of old, if you saw that vac in a shop you wouldn't buy it, ya tight git lol.

Bill, Enjoy your Hitachi, I hope it gives you a good taste of what floorcare was like for us in the 80s :P
 
If you want to kick yourself in the backside, take a look at some of the auction results from this place in Burnley last week, the two I spotted were listed as Lot 11 - "Vintage vacuum cleaner", and Lot 47 - "Vintage Hoover Junior Vacuum Cleaner", I'll let you look at what they sold for, rather than spoiling it:

..WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAHHH WOAH WOAH WOAH I did NOT say that and certainly didn't mean to imply it! I actually meant if Bill moves house, or space becomes an issue etc etc..

Anyway, I still stand by my annoyance. It wasn't that much of a major annoyance to begin with, although I see it may have been taken that way due to my frustration at having to repeat everything.

I still feel it should have stayed here, but hey, I guess I should be thankful it's at least gone to someone who will look after it.
