So I'm wondering what part I would need to convert a central vacuum (early 80's Beam) to a bagged unit? It has one intake port on the left and no stub or anything inside - like the intake port is flush with the inside of the canister on the inside.

I'm amazed at how much of a pain the inverted bag filter is / how dirty it gets. It is the original filter ... but still a messy messy task - and it doesn't take long for the tank to fill with fluffed up cat hair!

In a related note, does anyone know what the bag system is like on the Canavac CLS 750

It looks like a bottom motor / top fill - but does it have good airflow like a CVI / MD unit (like I've read testimonials on here!)? Is the bag suspended by a filter? I'm not in any rush - just doing casual research for what my next power unit may be - you never know when you'll stumble upon the next deal of the century :)

I believe the MD bag adaptor would not work with your system, as the Beam plastic intake neck has a thicker wall (so, smaller inside diameter) than MD's metal neck around which the adaptor was designed. On your system, the only way I can think of would be to remove the intake neck (4 screws), then replace with a piece of central vac pipe that extends into the can...probably with a 90 degree elbow on the end of it facing downward at an angle to accept a NuTone or Eureka (better fit) paper bag. You would need to seal around where the pipe enters the can, as well as the screw holes.

The CanaVac 750CLS does indeed look like a bottom motor bagged machine, probably a closed bag supported by the permanent cloth filter (which no longer moves up and down, of course, but still supports the bag away from the sides of the can, which is important). Beam used to make a very similar model under their name, and Frigidaire, and Eureka PowerLine, that you may want to look for.
