Will, do you remember which Autoflex it was? If she got it in 85, it was likely the blue U2198. If it was 86, it could've been the infamous "glass" red U2336

I think it was the blue one...I seem to remember soverign or something like that on the front but im sure it was actualy a turbopower as it looked identical and was made by Hoover. Im guessing a rare machine?

I don't think the Sovereign was ever actually sold here. Only a few are dotted about and those were imported from the US. The Sovereign was almost identical to the U2198 apart from the branding.

I maybey thinking of someone elses vac then. But my nan certainly had the blue turbopower. I remember being scared of it as a little one lol.Hope to get hold of a Dolphin myself someday. Great luxes.

Controversial statement coming folks...Hoover fans, avert your eyes...

Will, I actually much prefer vintage Electrolux's over vintage Hoover's. Especially the 500 and Twin Turbo series uprights. They just seem to perform equally as well on carpet and yet are so much lighter to use, more convenient and have the better filtration.

Here is a pic of the U2198. Sorry it's not the best pic.

aha! This is the bruiser! Yep she had that one. I have to agree with you on that chris..The Electroluxes are great machines also. I have a Electrolux contour Flexihead that i want to possibly swap for a hoover turbo or hoover junior.. I over did it a while back and had loads of luxs and now want some hoovers instead for a change. It does need the brushroll sorting mind and i can not find one to save my life to replace the current one thats in it. Other than that it is in great condition and performs well. If you know of anyone wanting to swap then let me know ;-)

Contour

I was never a massive fan of the contour. Apart from a more modern design, I thought they were a hugh step backwards from the 600 series that came before it. Between the Contour and Hoover Turbo 2, it would be one of the only times I went with the Hoover.

Contour

When it came to style, the Electrolux Contour lacked the refinement of the 600 and make no mistake. Despite this, the build quality was significantly greater. I saw many a cleaner from the 600 range which was just too expensive to repair due to the number of broken parts which required replacement. I used to dread getting them in for repair, because unless it was for a blocked hose, a belt, or a new lead, or similar, I'd end up spending time stripping the cleaner down only to find half a dozen or more broken parts which needed to be replaced. Few if any customers ever wanted to spend the money, and I can't say I blame them either, but that left me with having to put the thing back together, and in some cases left with the cleaner too if they didn't come back.

The Turbopower 2 and 1000 cleaners were something else altogether, because apart from a very narrow hose which was liable to block, these cleaners were built like a tank. Very unusual for the time.

Benny, I was more refering to the performance. The Contour just didn't cut it like the 600 did, mainly due to quite an underwhelming brushroll and that friction fit ridiculous handle release on the earlier models that ALWAYS broke.

I agree about the Turbo 2 and 1000, apart from the earlier models were prone to the bag door's splitting down the middle, but this issue seemed to be ironed out on the later models.
