(1987) Dirt devil broom vac model 701.

This is my dirt devil broom vac and it needs a lot of work. Broken fan, broken pulley for belt and probably a broken motor. I will try my best to get this going again.

Great find! Those are really rare. It was the first model. I have one too. Make sure you document the model tag well for preservation, because they screwed up and used thermal sensitive carbon ink and it fades with time, and from motor heat. Mine is so faded I had to use a blacklight to read it.

How is the belt pulley broken?
If the motor is bad, it can be swapped with the one from the handheld. Lower amperage but will still fit

I got good news and bad news.

Good news is that the broom vac is in the shop and the bad news is my friend said the broom vac belt shaft may be locked up. So wish me luck he gets it fixed and in operating condition.

If someone tried to pick up something wet with it, that is not surprising. Some people used them to vacuum their deck rugs and sunrooms. Most vacuums I find have not been run in 15-30 years so not unusual to have the motor stuck.

This thread on the DD broom vacuum-used to have one of these-it was a GREAT and powerful little vacuum!Could fit in areas where other dared to tread!But during a move the little vacuum got overlooked in the utility room closet.I still miss it-but haven't seen any good used ones.Bought the one I had at K-Mart.

Was in storage for 15yrs. I think the bearing is drying up from non use, as it makes a metallic chatter noise when I turn it off. Looks brand new. All told it probably has maybe 5 hours of use on it. Looks 10, condition 8.5-9. Hope you can salvage it, they're kind of fun to have around.

Okay there is some spark action going on

I do smell something like burning I don't know if that's the sparks or if it hasn't been ran in a long time. My friend said they should both correct itself in the machine.

Yes the carbon brushes, if they are new and have been replaced, have to hone themselves into the motor so you might notice an ozone like smell or blue sparks. This should clear up the longer it is used. Burning rubber smell would be coming from the belt, make sure it is installed correctly and is not slipping. If the belt is OK, it can also possibly be an old smell trapped in the motor from the last owner that is finally being blown out.

The sparks get more blue I hope that's a good sign.

That the carbon brushes are original and aren't new. I don't know if that changes the subject.
