1982* Hoover Turbolite

So, while browsing the Land of eBay  I discovered this ol' gal for a buy it now at £19.95 ($25.72). I Couldn't pass again! (A few years ago I passed on another Turboilite which was being sold for dirt cheap and locally and  have regretted it ever since.) 


 


Anyway, she was in much worse condition than I had judged by the pictures but oh well, she's cleaned up very nicely and is in good hands now.  All that was needed was the usual strip, wash and TLC. Oh and a new brushroll and belt.


 


Unfortunately I didn't do a before video like i usually do :/

Also if anyone has any information on turbolites I would be very grateful to hear as I know nothing except they're essentially our (the UK's) take on a VERY basic elite.

Hmm..

Not as well packaged as I'd of liked but ah well, she's still intact and I've had much worse packaged machines.

Even the postman joked "No guessing what it is!" Aye, I know love now you'll know me as the weirdo on the street who collects old vacuums!

Had a god awful potent smell of fecal matter and barn smell.

Bag out and handle removed.

And being dismantled. Never noticed this before, but the cut outs on the handle looks a bit like a very chilled out and happy face, Lol.

Very warn brushroll. After removing the sole plate and brushroll, I decided to quickly flee outside...

Because...

I was greeted with this, which at first I thought was an ants nest. Turns out nothing was alive in 'it'(thank god) Can't tell if it was an ants nest, or it's just bath salts. Also, a penny just chilling in there, which quite frankly can stay on the outside table!

After prodding and scraping out the thing I removed the hood, and then the motor.

Meant posting these earlier...

Unfortunately, the Hoover logo and "Top fill bag" lettering had worn off which I didn't notice in the listing. But was easily fixed, which will be shown soon.

Also, a few of the VERY deep gouges, bit of strain showing on the bag holder, and slightly yellowed hood.

Now onto the motor ~

Iv'e never seen so much carpet fluff in a dirty fan motor before!

Also, very dry bearings which I packed with grease. The fan could also do with replacing soonish. it's not in terrible condition but not in its best state, but good enough to do for now.

After the motor had been cleaned, a bead of sealant was placed on the fan chamber.

And, my fix for the lettering on the bag. Unfortunately it didn't turn out as neat as I had hoped, but hey, you don't really see the imperfections from a distance.

Seeing how the yellowing wasn't terrible I decided to hand sand it. Here's a 50/50 shot.

After ~

Anyway, freshly cleaned motor back into the chassis and, before I forget again, the rating plate.

Again, correct me if I'm wrong, last 4 digits - 1182, Nov, 1982?

I just need to order a new brushroll and a pack of belts and she's all ready to go!

reminds me of my electrolux discovery 2 i got in a yard sale no bag no filter what a mess to clean to me two days ! but now she runs like new . Nice to fix up old vacuums

I'm not sure how to date the ones sent over there but I can tell you this style of Hoover wasn't produced till 1988.

Sweet Turbolite/Elite!

Well, you truly brought that one back from the dead! Great job restoring it. I liked your idea of sanding it to remove the scratches. These cleaners are more powerful than you would expect, especially after you install a white HEPA Hoover Type A disposable bag. I'm not sure if those would be available in the UK, but you might be able to find something else that works. I've always had a soft spot for Elites, with the Turbolite/Elite 200/C1403 being my favorites. Gotta love the slide-top outer bag.

I have to say, though, 1982 seems a bit early to me--I'm pretty sure they were not being built that early on. I think 1990 is more likely (first thing after the model number in the serial number), but I couldn't say for sure.

I have a C1403, the commercial version of your vacuum, which I assume was made in January 1991, but the serial number on mine is in a different format than the one on your Turbolite. I've put a pic at the end below. This one does not include the model number in the serial number.

Relooking at the serial number and dating as you would a, i.e, Turbopower, it could be July 1989.

I had considered ordering Type A bags as I've heard others say that they do work better than our H4 bags.
