For those who have knowledge about these two methods Royal offers for height adjustment. Is there really a significant difference or advantage to either? I am considering getting one of the 18" commercial models, and would like to hear some advice on which is preferable. I will be using the vacuum on carpets that are full of dirt and debris, and the spaces I clean aren't furnished so I want to get a good deep clean, and proper height setting is vital. Please give your opinions of which system works more reliably in your experience. Be nice!

Precision or Ease?

Though I haven't had any problems with the Au-toe-matic (toe click) system, the Rite-Height (dial) system allows for exact adjustments (and I prefer it). Though most people will find the ease of switching adjustments with the "toe click", you can get fanatical precision with turning the dial knob. This would be particularity important if you have unique carpeting or a particular need.

The dial adjustment would be more of a pain when having to switch between many different heights in the course of everyday vacuuming. Though still definitely doable, I think it'd get old fast (Most people want quick and easy vacuuming VS the hassle that may result from fulfilling special needs).

Not to hijack

But since we're on the topic of the height adjustments, mine has the toe click system but it slips out of place constantly, so i cut notches into the adjustment bar in hopes that it would "lock" it into position since it was smooth and had nothing to grab onto....it does not. I've been thinking about replacing the system and i'm curious is going to the screw system even an option?

Video's with 18" Royal Commercial

As an addition to this question, I put together this playlist of harder to find video's (for those who haven't seen them anyway). I'll be adding to this playlist here and there.

(for copy/paste fanatics)

I'm leaning towards the infinite adjustment as of now, but am still intersted in more feedback. Thanks for all the answers so far!

The infinite adjustment is more reliable. It would be the one to get if you are using it mainly on one height of commercial carpet. The step adjuster can get the steps rounded off, and sometimes the wheel fork will wear and even crack where it meets the step adjuster. It does keep you from bending down, and the parts are not too expensive when it wears out. So, you have to way the convenience of the toe adjuster to overall reliability.

Good videos on the 18" Royal Commercial.I have two of these machines-one is new like the one in the video-the other I have is older-and has a grey cloth dump bag.The old one came from a unclaimed repair pile in a former vac shop. The vac shop man repaired the machine--but was unclaimed. He saved the unclaimed machines for me-bought it for just the price of the repairs. Was like 50 bucks. Both of these beasts work BETTER than any other wide sweep vacuum I have used.I have a wide sweep Saintaire-and these Royals blow the Sanitaire off the carpet!!You can see it for yourself-sprinkle some debris and pick it up with the end of the Royal nozzle-GOBBLES the stuff right up-The Sanitaire chokes on it.I used the yellow multilayer bags in my Royals until now---Please upgrade to the new Royal-Hoover HEPA Filtrete bags--you will be glad you did!!!Makes a GREAT machine even BETTER!!You can pack the Filtrete style bags almost like a brick!!I quit using the white single layer B bags becuase of the power of the later Royal 7-10A motors. They WILL burst the single layer bag if you try to fill it too much.I love those Royal machines as much as my Kirbys!!Will drag out my 18 incher and give her a spin as to your videos-will put a Filtrete bag in mine. The new bags come in packs of two--but will hold the equivelent of a large pack of those single layer paper bags.
Right now I see too many Sharks and Bissels in the trade in piles--or worse-the vac shop dumpster.
I also like the audible "feedback" of debris going thru fans and into bags of direct air machines-this tells you and a client the machine is doing the job!!!And you show them the packed, full bag!!!Those Royal bags can hold MANY binfuls of dirt from the Shark or Bissel. Those Royals will also blow away Dysons!!Sorry,Dyson guys!

Video's aren't mine!

The video's in the playlist I shared are great videos, but alas they aren't mine, just shared. They do show that hours of vacuuming can still not get all the dirt out of a carpet though. Hopefully a reasonable amount of debris can be removed in a few careful passes, and the rest can be removed with extraction...

TTI Royal no longer builds the "Pony" metal canisters nor the metal hand vac-the Prince.Mistake,I feel.both of those machines were really liked by previous Royal customers. They should be brought back.I knew someone that used the Royal tank commercially and she LOVED it-No vacuum she has tried equals it.I beleive Royal now only makes one model of "residentual" metal upright-the Royal Pro Elite.Have one.Works nice!!!It doesn't have a headlight as other household Royals did.

Yes,vacuum cleaners do go by the rules of physics-there is no such thing as a machine that removes ALL the dirt at one time. The secret is HOW MUCH it can remove-some machines more so than others we have seen in the videos. The bagless vacuums will do OK--until their filters clog!

Oh yes,on the Royal uprights-I prefer the variable dial height adjust over their "Aut-To-Matic" adjust.Bump the pedal height models and it changes-and they wear faster. My carpet is one height so the dial works fine for me-now with someone that has several heights of carpet-could see where the variable dial height could be a problem.

I have both, and although the 5 position pedal adjustment is quick and easy, I still much prefer the old knob adjustment. For my carpets, the 5 positions are spaced too far apart. One position is a little too high, the next one is too low. With the knob, I can get it just right! I have experienced slippage with the pedal on a couple of my Royals too.
