My name is Kevin. Thank you for welcoming me ! I recently purchased a Model XXX electrolux, with rug nozzle and original hose. The hose does not function after a thorough cleaning.I read Charles Lester had some luck with sealing the hose with Latex liquid. What is your opinion on this ? Also, I would like to find all the original attachments, including the air filter. How would I find what year the cleaner was manufactured?

Welcome Kevin! I haven't tried the liquid latex method myself, so I couldn't help you much there. The XXX was made from 1937 to 1954, except for the years 1942-1945, when the plant, as well as most other US factories switched over production for the war effort. Charles Lester could give you more detailed info for dating it, but I'll tell you what little I know. From the beginning until about 1948, they had a 475-watt motor, then beginning in 1948 they built it with a 565-watt motor. Also in 1948, the runners were changed from flat to round, the way they were mounted changed, and the louvered exhaust door was changed from being a single door that swung up when you plugged in the hose to a split "saloon door" style that opened to the sides. My XXX is kind of a hybrid--has all of the newer features but still has the older 475-watt motor, which tells me that it MUST have been built in early 1948, at a time when they were trying to use up the 475's before they started building them with the bigger motors. Then in the last years of production, 1953 and 54, The rear end and front cover were painted hammertone blue. Here's mine.

The XXX is a beautiful piece of early-mid 20th century industrial design, and a fine machine to boot. From an aesthetic standpoint, the XXX and its successor, the LX are major standouts. I had an opportunity to buy an XXX a few weeks ago, but I just came home with the LX that was sitting next to it. Those woven hoses are the Achilles heel of many Electrolux canister models. Your best bet for functionality is going to be to get a non-electrified vinyl replacement hose and just keep the original for display purposes. The nice part is that hose coupling is the same from the XXX, right on up to units made in the 1990s, before Electrolux consolidated U.S. and Canadian production, standardizing to the plastic Canadian style canisters, which had a different (and inferior, IMO) coupling system.

The nearly universal problem with the woven hoses, as you have found, is the rubber liner inside deteriorates over time and they leak like a sieve, robbing the machine of nearly all suction. I remember reading several years ago about different methods for sealing those hoses, but none seemed terribly successful. That said, I seem to recall the liquid latex method was probably the best, but getting an even coating inside the hose to seal it completely was a challenge, not to mention the fact that the latex itself wasn't cheap. That said, if you do try that method, let us know how it goes.

Welcome aboard, Kevin!

Yes, you can latex the inside of a cloth hose, but like others have said here it is a tedious process to get it right, and can also be expensive. I have also read on here that the process has to be repeated every few years for the hose to remain airtight.

What I recommend in your case is to keep the original cloth hose for display/collection purposes, and buy a nice vinyl hose for actual use. Besides, it would also keep the cloth hose from getting snagged on corners and furniture.
