    My vacuum collecting sickness

I Collect 'Em, But Don't Buy 'Em. I don't go to thrift stores for my finds, I simply find them at the curb, ready for the trashman. I don't even go out of my way, I simply look to see what is being thrown away on my daily commute to work. Generally find run-of-the-mill Hoover, Bissell and...

    How Do YOU Pronounce "Vacuum"?

The question today is how Do YOU Pronounce "Vacuum"? Normally, I have always used the pronunciation vac-yoom, but after seeing a Tektronix video about the Square Wave, I like how the narrator pronounced it. He said vac-yoo-um. So, since seeing that video, I have made it a point to always...

Hoover PortaPower Users: Cloth or Paper?

My feeling is that the paper bag might retain finer dust that the cloth bag might allow to pass through. SO, I'm gonna order the adapter/rubber ring that allows the use of the paper bags. It's only 8 bucks and free shipping, so no big deal to give it a whirl.

Hoover PortaPower Users: Cloth or Paper?

Hello to all Hoover PortaPower users. Do you prefer using the cloth bag or the paper bag/adapter combo and why? I found one being thrown away with the cloth bag. I have the Type N paper bags, but not the adapter/rubber ring that allows the use of the paper bags. Is it worth it for me to invest...

    Thrift Store Vacuums

Yes, I know about the one in Hempstead, but it's out of my way, and I would have to pay to get someone else's castoffs. I'm fortunate that I am able to get plenty 'o vacs on my commute to work, they patiently wait for me as I drive by, I stop and rescue them from a terrible fate.

Silly and Useless Question, But I'll Ask Anyway.

My GE upright vacuum P4U7 bag zips UP to close the bag. The Hoover Convertible, and others zip DOWN to close. Which do you prefer, and why? Do any scientific theories, traditions customs or lore govern the proper direction of zipping the bag closed?

    Thrift Store Vacuums

What's a Thrift Store? Unfortunately for me there are no thrift stores around by me. Fortunately, there are plenty of vacs available at the curb on trash day waiting for me to collect them during my commute to work. Uprights, canisters, wet/dry vacs, carpet cleaners. My only costs in getting...

General Electric Upright CAT NO. P4U7

I got the Belt! I bought the Dirt Devil 4/5 belt at Home Depot. On the back of the bag it is written Distributed by Hoover,Inc., even has the Hoover.com url on the bag, but zero mention that it fits any Hoover products, only Dirt Devil models. Seems to me like they are doing themselves a...

General Electric Upright CAT NO. P4U7

Thanks For The Info Yes, it looks like the Eureka style F&G upright bag will fit, and it looks like the Hoover style C bag can also be used. I'm going to try the belts in my flat belt collection and see if I can get a good fit.

General Electric Upright CAT NO. P4U7

Found two uprights recently side by side at the curb, a Hoover Concept One U3101 and a General Electric P4U7. Plenty of info available on the Concept One, so no real need to post about it, as belts and bags are readily available, but the General Electric is a different story. Does anyone have...

Why, Oh Why Do They Cut The Cord?

Another one! So... This time I found a ShopVac, this time only the plug was cut off. New plug, works fine. Again, WHY? This unit has/had a molded plug, its of no use by itself, why cut it off? To disable the vac from ever being used again? FEH! Not a victim of copper theft, the cord was still...

Why, Oh Why Do They Cut The Cord?

If Scrappers Want The copper from the power cord, why not the copper from the motor windings as well? I replaced the power cord on three of the wet/dry vacs that I had found, and they all work perfectly, so why throw 'em away in the first place? You could probably get more for 'em at a garage...

Why, Oh Why Do They Cut The Cord?

I recently found three wet/dry vacuums, in different locations, and all were complete, except the power cord was cut off. A Ridgid, a Craftsman, and a Stanley. Do these people think that by cutting the cord off, they disable the vacuum from operating ever again? If these people are handy...

The Connection Between Vacuums and Sewing Machiness

Many, many of the small, Mom-and-Pop stores that sell and service vacuums also do the same for sewing machines, at least in my area. What is the connection between the two? Is it because both have motors and are used in the home? I collect vacuums, but also have an interest in sewing...
