    New Vacuum

Education/Tax 'Mollycoddled' - Excellent word!! The first products of the post 'blame culture' education system are already on the streets as adults. Sadly, that's where many of them will stay, as they have no usable skills for the employment market. They have managed to grow up (physically)...

    New Vacuum

School, etc. Yes, I did the old GCE 'O' Levels, MadaboutHoovers... I have had a look in several modern 'Science' schoolbooks, and frankly I'm not surprised that children generally no longer like 'science'. Firstly, it's all so 'jumbled up' that even having already done the same work (and more)...

    New Vacuum

Useful Yes, Tolivac, I think it could be a useful (and fun) tool to add to my collection. I have a goddaughter who has just started secondary (high) school here, and I'm hoping to perform a few of the 'Lab Demonstrations' which our 'dumbed down' education system no longer provides. I already...

    New Vacuum

Photograph, as promised Isn't she a beauty???? She's had an oil change now :-) Though what came out hadn't been 'oil' for years by the look of it.... It was just sludge and water... :-(

    New Vacuum

I bought myself a new 'vacuum' last week. Built in the '60s by Edwards High Vacuum Ltd, my nice new (to me) 'Speedivac' High vacuum pump doesn't shift much air, (and God help anyone who may try to move dust with it while I'm about), but it should achieve a final pressure of 0.1mm Hg or less :-)...

    Sunday's car boot sale bargain

Name on plug I have to say that it's not a question that I was expecting... But it's branded 'Midelec', so I assume it refers to the local (Midlands) Electricity Board. So perhaps it still has it's original plug. It's a basic, brittle, white UF type, so it's probably a miracle that it has...

    Sunday's car boot sale bargain

I picked this up yesterday (Sunday) at my local car boot sale. I never knew that Hoover made such things. It was FULL of dust and dirt, and the bearings were so dry that it wouldn't run at all (at first). After some cleaning (compressed air line) and lubrication (bearings and switches) it's...

    A Kirby C goes for a poultry sum...Oh, Nooooo!!!

Supply and demand Well 'Ranted', NYCWriter..... Whilst I am surprised and amazed by some of the prices things fetch, I have the serenity to accept that it's just market forces at work... As you say, there are plenty of 'deeper pockets' out there..... I still can't help wishing that someone...

    A Kirby C goes for a poultry sum...Oh, Nooooo!!!

'A poultry sum' ... Presumably, that would be 'chicken feed' ;-) I never cease to be amazed at some of the outlandish prices people manage to get on Ebay... Proof that 'auction fever' is alive and well. Why does nothing I list on Ebay fetch that sort of money??? :'( All best Dave T

    BEARING GREASE

Thanks for pics That looks like it could be manufactured without 'too' much trouble... I could do with:- A) dimensions (Does anyone own one of these AND a micrometer/vernier caliper??) B) a couple of 'end on' photographs of the two parts. Preferably after cleaning, so more detail can be seen...

    BEARING GREASE

Adaptors Please, someone, post some pictures, and preferably list the important dimensions... I may be able to make a few (I'm still looking for interesting projects for my nice shiny new lathe/miller... ;) All best Dave T

    Computer advice....

HDD Security Matt, please take it from me that even a 'full' format (or running 'FDisk' and clearing the Partition Table) will NOT destroy all the Data on the disc, I have personally recovered almost full data from drives in this condition. The only way to destroy the data content is to...

    Bit of advice needed

"Digital Motor" Pardon me asking, but what, precisely IS a 'digital motor'??? Are we talking a Stepper Motor, or an ordinary motor 'digitally CONTROLLED' by a PWM board?? Any motor which 'spins at 100,000rpm' is going to have a VERY short service life indeed. It seems that Dyson is telling us...

Vacuums That Failed To Sell Well In America

Electrolux Is the fabled hookline 'Nothing Sucks Like (an) Electrolux' genuine advertising, or just an 'urban myth'?? I figure someone on here should know the definitive answer..??.. All best Dave T

TV Programmes that have been axed & you miss

Old shows Most of the old T.V. shows which I loved and miss went off-air because their casts retired/died. Looking forward to the odd Christmas repeat. :-) All best Dave T

Increase in Vacuums in the trash?

"Cash for Clunkers" Not intending to hijack the thread, but.... I'm assuming this was a Govt. sponsored ruse to get older cars off the road, and completely destroy the 'used' car market?? We had something similar on this side of the 'pond' a few years back. The Govt. sponsored 'Scrappage'...

    Heavily abused Dysons

Organist Sebo_Fan.... You are an Organist??? (Reply#51) Kudos!!!!! It's nice to see that this Dyson is surviving Commercial Duty, And thanks, Matt for maintaining it - and the church. Whether or not we use them, these buildings are an irreplaceable part of our collective heritage. As for the...

vacuum enthusiasts: what's your choice of washer and dryer?

Indesit At risk of hijacking the thread (perhaps this should go in the 'Imperial' section of AW) I used to own an Indesit which lasted around 20 years with very few problems and very little maintenance. I have no idea of the model number now, but it was a FL induction motor model, with a knob...

    Vintage Singer sewing machines

Vintage Singer?? Does a Singer 306K class as 'Vintage'?? I assume that it must, since my mother bought it 50+ years ago. I have now 'inherited' it, as my mother has gone into 'care', and her home sold to pay for it. (Thanks, Tony B.Liar and the U.K. government.) :-( All best Dave T

    bearing oil

Bearing oil For vacuum cleaner motor bearings, I would recommend GENUINE 'sewing machine oil'. This is obtainable from anywhere which sells/repairs 'Brother' professional sewing machines. (It is thin and clear, and looks like 'Liquid Paraffin'). Vacuum motors spin fast and run HOT. Cheaper oils...
