One wonders if the choice of vacuum in these shows was a matter of paid product placement or whatever happened to be in some producers closet or floating around the studio ?

Did any of you get a chance to see NCIS last Tuesday night (10/28)? Two of the agents were helping out on the night shift because of night shift being short handed. There is one scene where they are working at their desks when Olga the cleaning lady comes in, running what appears to be a 500 series Kirby, which is quite a predominate part of the scene. And the Kirby is actually running too, as the sound is unmistakable!

Very interesting. Good that they actually had it running. I can't imagine a 1930s Hoover being product placement.
ALF: Dirt Devil broom vac is often seen in the laundry room, and a Hoover convertible appeared twice.
Family Matters: Hoover dialamatic, Dirt Devil Feather Light, and Hoover celebrity is seen at one point.
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air: Jeffrey often uses some sort of a Eureka Bravo type of upright.
Rosanne: Electrolux canister, Regina electric broom, and Jackie had a Eureka sweet 16.
Full House: Eureka f&g machine, Hoover Elite, Filter Queen, and Hoover tempo canister.
Reba: Dyson dc07
Frazier: Hoover steam vac
The infamous Black and Decker Dustbuster was also featured on many of the shows listed above.
Dog the Bounty Hunter: He was a Kirby salesman, and discussed his many Kirby’s that he owns during one episode.
The Osborns: Sharon used a Eureka Whirlwind.

What episode of dog the bounty hunter has many kirby's featured?
It’s been a while since I seen the episode, it was an earlier one in his house. He also pretended that he was a Kirby salesman in S2E1 to get a fugitive they were looking for.
Hoover and Westinghouse definitely did paid product placement on the early TV comedies like I Love Lucy and Bewitched.

I'd call it a mix of both. Companies that pay for the show want their product used somewhere, or might give a bonus if they do. And for set designers, going through the prop house they might just look at whatever "pops" to them for that scene. Maybe something with loud colors, or being ridiculous and over the top for a gag, or just something to go with a particular decade the show is set in.. I'd love to see the vacuum cleaners section in a prop warehouse
