I'm sure we all have one!

If you could ask a Vacuum Cleaner manufacturer to build you a custom Vacuum Cleaner with infinite funds, what would the specifications be ?

For me:

2000 Watt Clean Fan Motor with Variable Speed
10 Litre Bag
Four Stage Filtration
Brush & Beater bar with a clutch to stop spinning when the cleaner is upright
Head Lamp
Stretchable hose capable of cleaning 20 stairs
A sliding switch to change the motor speed from 1400W-1800W, completely variable
"TURBO" Button to increase wattage to full 2000W
LCD Screen displaying; current motor speed, bag fill level (a sensor would be fitted to detect the exact bag level), height adjustment level, belt condition (a sensor on the brush roll would detect any belt slippage), and an hour meter displaying the total hours the cleaner has been used for.

Ah... If only I could have one of those in real life! A man can dream though!

So - What would your "Dream Machine" be ?

If I walked into the vacuum aisle at Target and found a new Hoover Convertible for sale, I'd be thrilled. That would literally be a dream come true. That would be my dream model; a 2012, A-bag Convertible under $300. But it will never happen......

2000w is too much for my liking and unnecessary.

I'd go for:

1000w, 1100w max clean air
Hoover activator style brushroll
Separate motor to drive the brushroll so it can spin slower than the motor and groom the carpet more effectively
On board stretch hose (one that actually stretches!)
quiet
lightweight
full set of tools with an upholstery nozzle that MUST have velour strips to remove pet hair
beater bar on/off switch
BAGGED with high efficiency filter bags and a HEPA exhaust filter

I would like a modern twin-fan vacuum that had a similar brushroll to a Hoover Convertible or VGII/VGIII and have a large bag similar to the Sanitare ST bags and it would be made out of metal

I would love a "Eureka by Electrolux Ultra Dream Team":

An UltraOne canister (suction only) that has an 8-foot hose, sleek unencumbered hose handle, and a 30 foot cord that exits from the top of the canister. The canister would come with a nicely-designed separate plastic tool caddy that would hold packs of bags plus the following attachments: Electrolux "Dust Magnet" carpet/floor nozzle, a bare floor tool that takes disposable Swiffer cloths, a mini turbo nozzle for cleaning cars and a classic Eureka horsehair dusting brush, crevice tool and upholstery nozzle.

The canister would come with a nice, matching, sleek Eureka UltraTwo upright with 30-foot cord for carpet cleaning only - similar to the great Ultra upright of the 1980's. The Ultra would be upgraded with a 2-zipper bag and a easy-to-change disposable bag with self-closing cardboard collar - like the new Sanitaire bags.

The "Dream Team" would store on top of each other - there would be slots on the hood of the Ultra upright that would allow you to securely sit the canister on top of it. Hooks on the upright's handle would provide a place to hang the hose. You could trundle the pair of vacs to the room to be cleaned just by leaning back the upright onto its 2 large rear wheels.

How's that for a dream?

I think an old Electrolux (G, 1205, Super J) has everything I want in a dream vac:
1. Self-sealing, multi-layer dust bag
2. Automatic shut-off
3. Will NOT work w/o bag
4. Super quiet vacuum & PN motors

The only things missing are:
1. Longer cord
2. Longer hose
3. Variable speed control
4. Headlamp on SideKick PN
5. On-board storage for SideKick

My guess is the old Electrolux canisters (my dream vac) REALLY exist :)

Well for me it's going to be vintage,
Compact C-5 with ABC Nozzle, all Lewyt Electronics, first GE swivel top with power nozzle, Electrolux AF with original Power nozzle, and first Don Clark Airway.
You know what, just give me the power nozzles and i'd be happy lol
Or a golden Convertible 65

my dream vacuum cleaners

1) Dyson DC01 de stijl
2) Dyson DC05 motor head
3)Dyson DC14 or 15 animal
4) Dyson DC31 animal
5)Dyson DC23 motorhead
6) Hoover purepower bagged with or without autosense
Thats all :)

btw

i would ask for:
autosense makes brushes stick out and suction increases like 50%!
lightweight
features of a dc01
suction of a dc08
durability
bin flap
style
quietness
strong brushbars!
clear vacuum

Kirby's of course

and especially my Old Kirby Model 561. I use that old girl almost every day, and have since it was new. Thers nothing I like better then the deep throaty roar of those 500 series... Dan

For me, I love my central vac. To me, it has the most suction power out of all my other vacs. The only thing I would change is to silent the motor. A silent vacuum motor would be FANTASTIC, especially with these new vac's that have that irritating loud ringing noise. Maybe also a power nozzle that has stiffer bristles and a little bit of a stronger motor. Other than that, there really isn't anything else I would change. Maybe just a larger dust bag that I wouldn't have to change all the time.

Just my opinion :)

Actually JM you should start saving for the Miele S7580. It doesn't have everything in your spec but it's pretty close including a daft touch sensitive suction control panel on the front that's digital.

Sadly I think we all know Hoover in Europe would never be able to attain to such specs and it would be impossible to have such a "dream vacuum" without faults occurring. Some things already exist like having a 10 litre dust bag is going into Oreck territory.

In the meantime I have my dream vacuum - my Sebo X1.1 - it replaced a family owned 15 year old X1 Automatic and only required one extra drive belt replacement. It doesn't require higher power, it sucks well enough for 1150 watts, has an excellent sealing system which is why it has good power and the dust bags last for months. The digital panel on the floor head tells me all I need to know.

The ultimate "fantasy" vacuum cleaner for me would be a steam & vac robot - one I can program from the comfort of my chair, or send a text message from work to clean the home - not just the carpets but above the skirting boards with commands like:

1) Polish and dust the shelves.
2) Clean behind the refuse bin and behind the major appliances.
3) Curtains, hard floors and soft furnishings.
4) Heavy traffic areas to be steamed or washed - your preference.
5) Steam clean bathroom.

Not a problem Brian - I'd buy it if it were on sale!

You wait and see, in about 20 years from now, 10 even, we will be able to have a conversation with our Vacuum Cleaners and even get them to mow the lawn!

Things are getting more advanced every day.

I'm Easy -

All I would want is a TriStar CXL with two changes -

1) A suction control on the hose handle (this is one vac that really NEEDS one). This change is doable.

2) A cord-winder that does not change the outward appearance of the vac in any way whatsoever. This change is NOT doable.
