They started selling Compact vacuums in 1947. World War II was over, and the new "Lamb" motor was available. Since Interstate Engineering was a die-cast aluminum manufacturer of airline parts, it was only too easy to make the vacuum. They had already designed it and made a very small number of them for Howard Hughes airline. Commercial air travel was taking off in a big way after the war, and the airline industry had to have a vacuum that was easy to use on an aircraft. The Electrolux was too long, the Hoover was too big, they all presented problems. So Interstate designed the Compact specifically for the air line industry BUT the cleaning people who used them all fell in love with them and wanted to buy them. They started a small direct sales organization in California and it blew UP. Within ten years, they had sold a million Compacts in the USA. They were the most expensive vacuum on the market for almost two decades. In 1958, the Compact was $229 and the Electrolux model AF was $99.

The compact might have been just for Howard Hughes TWA and after the war they started DTD?

If you have the 50th anniversary edition I know you know how to find the year that would likely be when DTD sales started.

I have a binder that was given to Compact salesmen in the 1970's. One of the pages details their history starting in 1937 when the company was formed. That's where the info came from.

Im willing to bet you have volumes of vacuum binders. You have a vacuum with your name on it. Thanks for the info it's greatly appreciated.
The 1959 would it fit the motor that is in the c9? I ask just because the snout is different.

Les:
You can use a C9 motor in a 1959 machine, however, you would sacrifice the blower feature. A 1959 motor can easily be installed in a C9 if you remove the blower shroud (2 screws).

You should see all the binders FULL of vacuum materials, owners manuals, etc. I've been collecting for almost 50 years.

Someone asked me if I thought about putting out a newsletter. I have so much stuff I could do that for years. One day you'll have to visit. There's a Staples across the street for color printing and I have a printer here at the shop. You're welcome to make copies of anything you like. The folks who come to the Vacuum Cleaner Collectors Conventions usually spend hours looking through all the printed materials I have.
