XXX motor...

I was using my xxx today and it sounded strange. I put my hand over the end of the hose to feel the suction, and the machine slowed down and started squealing. I turned it off. I know the bearings are bad, because the back one is dry and the balls in the bearing are smashed looking. I have taken all the screws odd the motor and taken the nuts off the mount, but the motor won't pull out. How do I go about doing this? thanks.
 
Interesting that You Ask This:

because I just took a motor out of a Model 30 myself last week. If the motor hasn't been taken out in a long time, you've really got to give it a good yank to get it out. In my Model 30, the nuts were almost frozen into place...I actually broke a pair of pliers trying to loosen them. You probably are afraid to be too aggressive trying to remove the motor especially if you love the machine...which I totally understand...but in this case, you're combating 50+ years of crud that has served to "glue" the motor in place.

It might help to try to turn the motor before pulling on it to remove it. Don't worry, though...the Model 30 is a "tough" machine!
 
Well/

I have the screws taken out of the motor and all the spacers out. So the motor will move around a lot. The big black bracket around the perimeter of the motor seems to be keeping it from pulling out. Problem is, The black bracket seems to be stuck, even though I have taken the screws out of it. So I'm afraid there's something else I need to do to get that bracket out first.
 
Try...

tilting the motor. I had some difficulty getting the new motor into my Model 30, and I found that if I angled it slightly, that piece (bracket) you're mentioning will clear the motor mount. Or, try turning the motor in place and then try to pull it out. Let me know what happens!

I just don't see how it will be able to come out. the metal plate between the motor and fan won't clear that bracket. Is there some way to get to the suction end and take the fans off first?
 
Unless you've got a very old model XXX - with the Bakelite motor (have never seen one taken apart myself - so don't know how those older ones are set up) - you should be able to merely remove the three nuts holding the entire motor assembly in the tank, and out it comes. Now, the rubber gasket/vibration damper boot may be stuck to the bulkhead, but should still come out with a little persuasion. If it's that stuck though - it may need to be replaced.

That is the only way I know of getting the motor assembly out of a XXX. After it's been removed, then you can service the brushes, bearings, fans, quite easily.

think mine is early, since I'm almost positive this ring bracket is bakelite. I can take a picture and post it tomorrow.
 
Sorry. I have not seen the inside of an early machine. If I have, it would have been a hundred years ago.....I would like to see some pictures of the inside though - perhaps then I may be of some assistance.
 
It's a little difficult to tell from the picture - but that machine may be similar to the XII - the XXX's predecessor. The Bakelite housing may have very small headed screws that are somewhat buried inside "tunnels". Those are the ones that must come out to remove the assembly. Still, I am thinkin' that the whole assembly should come out in one piece. I don't believe you can get the motor out unless that Bakelite motor mount is removed.

It may be hard to see those screws, (if they are there) and will require a very narrow screwdriver.

At any rate, I would put the motor back together to prevent damage to the fans at this point.

This is all speculation/guessing on my part based on your picture, and experience with the model XII.

You're right, you do have a very early machine there!!!
