Would sellers consider this weird/unreasonable?

I want to buy some interesting vacuums on ebay for my collection but I live with people that are always at home.

Would it be considered weird/unreasonable if I asked if a seller could ship in a plain box?

Im limited right now to what i can buy since I have to either purchase in person or use amazon's ship in plain packaging option but I wanna get some vintage ones so I was thinking of asking sellers if they can ship in plain packaging. I don't want to be a pain so I thought I would ask here first if it is unreasonable.

Let me know if this isn't the appropriate section for this thread.

I wouldn't say your request is unreasonable. BUT, be warned - if you ask them to ship in a plain box, and they have to pay extra for it, they will likely either refuse or insist you pay the extra cost for the box.

Actually most private ebay sellers that I have dealt with have shipped in plain boxes anyway, or maybe boxes with Amazon, FedEx, or USPS printing on them, but nothing on them that would indicate a vacuum cleaner being inside. And Elliott, I seriously doubt that someone would ship a vacuum cleaner in a banana box--too open and not enough protection there.

When I still operated my vacuum shop, I had so many empty boxes from all the vacuums we ordered and sold. I always shipped in one of those boxes. I remember sending a Hoover to someone in a Riccar box, the kid was so excited because he thought his mother bought him a Riccar. Turns out it was the old Hoover he bought on eBay. He was pretty upset about it, but since he was an adolescent I didn't give a damn.

Obviously used vacuums will usually be shipped in a random box. If I buy a vacuum that is NOS or that has its original box, I tell the seller that it must be shipped in an outer box, or they will receive negative feedback. Generally, most new vacuums that I ordered from a dealer came in an outer brown box, with the exception of Riccar. I believe that it’s a matter of security, obviously if someone sees a brand that they might not have heard of, they will assume that it’s expensive.

What would be wrong with buying a vacuum cleaner?

Im embarrassed by this hobby and I live with family that never leave the house so it's like my most guarded secrets. Silly but that's just me. I used to be interested in vacuums as a child and everyone knew about it but now I would rather people not know it's a me problem.

I can understand that.
I understand. All my friends and my family know I can fix anything, and I don't hoard machines as I like everything meticulously organized. People think it is a cool hobby and I use all of my stuff on a multiple time per week basis. I have one really nice 1986 K31X and I am building what I call the Filter Queen Castle. It is a shelving system designed to accomodate 2 Queens and a shelf up top for nozzles and attachments. I will be buying myself another one this year to restore then use. I only want machines that can run power nozzles. My 2nd will be a steel guard 95X or a 700 from Canada (both hard to get). I like 1970s to early 90s stuff so I collect appliances from that era. I also only buy the top of the line models also.

I wouldn't be embarrassed. I talk about it at work and with friends and family regularly! I get compliments on my machines because of how well they work. I take them to work and clean my big truck from time to time.

Once I have moved out I will be way more comfortable with people knowing it's just while I live with my parents if they knew i would not hear the end of it all the jokes. I think the general consensus is just ask sellers if they can and expect to pay more which is reasonable.

I know how it is! I have ended up the butt of thousands of jokes! Made me madder than a hornet.

Goofy question. I've never had a vacuum come in anything other than random boxes. Some good sellers will go out and buy brand new moving boxes and use them, others will just use whatever they can find. Also i don't care what people think of me. I have way more stress in my life than to worry about that.

I'm laughing as I read through this. My wife tries to discourage me from further collecting and will arch an eyebrow meaningfully if she sees another vacuum arrive on the front porch. "Another vacuum" she will ask in that accusatory tone I think wives practice among themselves when their hubbies are not within earshot. So, since I worked from home until I retired, I will wait for the UPS / FedEx / USPS delivery to arrive and quickly either squirrel it away somewhere in the garage or put it in the back of my van so I can take it to our storage unit when I go "shopping" later on.

Of course when she opens the lids on our trash cans and sees the cut up box and packing material I'm busted O_O

You collecting vacuums gets her out of having to do a job every week so why would she care?
