Eureka Ultra

Yes, Swingette, I think you're right. I can remember the Eureka Ultra as early as 1987. One of the things I liked better about the Ultra over the Elite was the perforated vinyl outer bag. I would love to find an Ultra, seems nowadays they're long gone. My first thought when I saw the Elite and the Ultra was OMG, they copied the Oreck! I guess Mr. Oreck's patent ran out by that point. And yes, even at that time, the Hoover's amperage was double that of the Oreck. Oreck's motor was 2.8 amps, Hoover's 5 amps and later more.

Eureka Ultra

came along about 1985 I believe, and was pretty much a variation on the standard vertical motor Eureka Upright. Motors between ULTRA models and regular Eureka uprights were interchangable.
The Ultra was a decent cleaner, maybe a little flimsy, but an attempt no less at re-inventing the upright, and the result was a nicely balanced cleaner that worked well. I've had a couple of Ultras here and there, the damn bags were always too hard to change!
Of course the Regina Housekeeper came out in 1986, and changed the course of uprights forever...

Hoover Elite

If we could only look into the future, one day we have something that seems like disposable junk and a few years later it seems much better than what is offered today,a few years ago my brother said he needed a vacuum, and having a few vacuums at the time, gave him the Elite, that was the only one I would part with, recently he said it stopped working and needed a vacuum,so again the only vacuum I would give him was Mom's Bissel Powerforce,She doesn't vacuum anymore, she said he could have it since I do all the vacuuming,I got the Elite back and thought it was just stopped up,the motor sounded great, but found out the fan was broken and stripped out, and the housing had many cracks in it. I think it still had the same bag in it when I gave it to him,so he doesn't deserve an upper end vacuum if he's not going to take care of it. Mark

Eureka Ultra

My friend across the street got a new dirt devil, and asked me if I would help her put it together,so before we opened the box I asked her what was wrong with the old vacuum, she could still take the new one back, she said it was an old Eureka, and I could have it if it wasn't fixable,so I had a vision of an old all metal Eureka upright, but she came back with this Eureka Ultra,I thought it would be like an Elite but when I turned it over it had the center fan, belt and roller like the older Eurekas, the roller had some wear so it was becoming noisy, and the tool conversion wasn't up to standard so the dirt devil won the suction test and she said take the old Eureka home with you,she doesn't keep anything she does not use due to lack of storage, she keeps everything like new ,so I guess it might be worth keeping.
