Looks like lath and plaster. Before there was drywall this is how walls inside homes were covered. My late aunt's home in LA had lath and plaster walls.

You can still buy traditional cast iron bath tubs. They cost a lot more than a steel or fiberglass tub though so you never see them in tract homes any more.

The cast iron sink ( retained by a hudi ring no less ), cast iron tub and toilet in one bathroom of the house I mostly grew up in were Navy gray. The walls were pink. Pink ! 1950s and 60s homes were like that. The kitchen had a built in oven with a pale yellow enamel door. For ages we had matching yellow Kenmore refrigerators. When the last yellow fridge finally died pastel colors like that were out of fashion and we had to settle for boring white.
It's cement plaster lathe for the ceramic tile.
