Which vacuum sounds the best to you?

Surely most of you here have that one vacuum whose sound you particularly enjoy. I thought it would be fun if each of you shared your favorite-sounding vacuum in this thread.

Personally, I think any Sanitaire with the new-style 7-amp motor sounds excellent. Some of you may not understand why I feel this way—I’m not even sure I fully know why—but it really hits “that note.” There’s just something about the clunk of the switch and the tremendous howl that follows. Repowering my S661 with this motor was such a good choice.

To me,

a good, metal base Hoover Convertible hitting the carpet is a very comforting sound.

Any metal Electrolux canister but I had a special fondness for the sound (or lack thereof) of my grandparents' Electrolux LX.

Hoover Z by far the smoothest and solid sounding (brushless motor, I believe).  Second would be the DC39 because of it's low dB level and the allowance of the vacummer (is that a noun yet?!?) to utilize and enjoy hearing the strong rush of airflow when using the tools.

I expected vacuums with two-stage motors to be a popular choice here because they sound great, of course! They do indeed tend to emit a pleasant tone. That is one thing that surprised me about my Fantom Thunder when I bought it; the two-stage Lamb Ametek has a smooth “voice.”

Brushless motors are unique, too. Rainbows and cordless Dysons both have a nice high tech ring to them.

Of course, we cannot forget the comforting hum of a Convertable, either!



vacuumdevil: Since you work in the vacuum industry, I would be curious to hear what you experience going wrong with the new style Sanitaire motor. I may be just a sample size of one, but I have had nothing but a good experience with the new motor. The one I installed in my classic S661 (the first blue line Sanitaire, perhaps?) has worked flawlessly through almost 8 years of service now. It still sounds good as new and has as much power as the old-style 7 amp motor it replaced, which did not fare so well. The old motor suffered a bent shaft and bearing failure by its previous owner, presumably after an overheating event. Granted, I take care of my vacuums, but this new motor now has many hours under its belt without skipping a beat.

Two of my cordless mowers have brushless DC motors-the magnets are on the rotor instead of the stator.Just simply turned around.These are not SR motors in the mowers.The brushless DC motor uses a circuit board to make it work.The board generates the pulses to make the PM magnet rotor turn-thus turning the blade.Works well but really doesn't have the breakdown torque the brushed motor has.The brushed motor advantage is a board is not needed to make it run.

I love the hum of the dual stage motors in the upper line Simplicity 7s and Riccar 8900s

The sound of the new Chinese Sanitaire Motors is just horrendously high pitched.
As far as reliability has been a problem. New units and units I'd say it's about 1 and 3 coming as a dud. Motor that barely turns on and Spins slowly.
I've had several of those new Motors fail after installation.
personally I wouldn't bother with the sanitaire that didn't have a Mexican motor or vintage one with an American motor .

I LOVE the sound of the Vacumaid P-125, it's the most funnest vacuum I've ever used!

Oh I can't even imagine where to start on this, I'm going to list off the machines that give a good spine tingle when the switch is turned on. The first was the Electrolux 1205 (this one also has the advantage of smelling wonderful while it runs too)! NSS M/M-1, Spencer Turbine, Filtex CTS500, Clarke 500. The more serious and beastly the thing sounds as it deeply roars to life the more I like! Most dual motor central vac units do it for me too, something about the harmonics of the two motors being slightly off really gives me the old "tingle running up my leg"!

Of the vacuums I have my favorite canister sound is probably Hoover Constellation (Penncrest badged) you just hear the air rush, upright is probably Eureka 1934A, the low grumble with the hum of the beater bar.
