Which brushroll to get?

I recently acquired a Sanitaire SC-684 from the World's Longest Yardsale for $5.00. The brushroll it came with is genuine Eureka VGII, but it vibrates really bad and feels like it's seizing up. Should I spend lots of money and get the genuine VGII, or save ten dollars and get a four row all brush roll? I will be cleaning mostly medium shag and plush carpeting.

I have read on here that Sanitaires go through belts really fast. Where can I find the best belt for this machine?

I think the 4-Brush model will be best for that groovy SHAG, man!!

Yes, it is safe to wash the bag in the bathtub. Use warm/hot water, and laundry detergent. Wash it twice and then rinse until the water is clear.
 
Plastic hood and new parts

Looks like I'll be spending lots of money to get a new plastic hood for my Sanitaire, since the mounting stems broke clean off the old one.* I would super glue it, but the hood's so scratched up, I might as well replace it with a new one. I'll be keeping the original fan since it's not nearly as chewed up as I thought. I hand washed the bag it the bathtub with cold water, and the first five or six times, the water came out pitch black. The bag is hanging up to dry right now.

I love Sanitaires. Always have. They are so incredibly simple, I had the motor in my hand in two minutes. Since this is my first 12" Sanitaire, I will be making sure it's pampered with the best stuff.

I've had the plastic screw stems break on a power nozzle. I used an epoxy repair kit to fix the problem. I think they're now stronger than before!
 
I hate those springs!

I was relieved to find that this machine's hood is (was) held on with screws. I want this machine to be perfect, so I will be buying it a brand new hood, putting in an older Sanitaire motor, getting a new fan and, eventually a brand new brushroll. I've heard of people using Koblenz belts on these. Is that a good idea?
 
I learned a valuable lesson today...

Ever since A to Z vacuums (my local vac shop) closed down, I've been having to fend for myself. Well, I made the mistake of taking the Sanitaire to House of Vacuums, which is much farther away. I had no intentions of leaving without the Sanitaire, but that's what happened. Not 15 seconds after I walk in, he starts writing up a repair slip and while my back was turned looking at the new shiny Sanitaires, my machine's already behind the counter with a tag on it. The guy absolutely REFUSED to give the machine back. He INSISTED that it stay there so he can "work" on it. The only reason I went there was to get brushroll bearings, bristle strips, and a belt. But NOOO, the jerk running the store needs to make a quick buck. I will NEVER do business with this man again. If you're ever in Birmingham,***DO NOT*** go to the House of Vacuums.
 
That's how they get ya! Been to many places like that but you learn not yo bring the machine in. & when you don't get the answer you're looking for, walk away or run fir your life!!! Sorry about that Clayton, I hope you didn't get screwed too bad
 
I will NEVER take a machine in a vac shop that I intend to leave with ever again. I had to give my name and phone number (in retrospect, that should have been my cue to get the hell out!) and when (if) he calls, I won't be able to answer it because my job requires me to have my cell phone off from 8-3 every day. I should have just ordered parts off of the Internet like God intended. I know better now!
 
Clayton, that's terrible. Defiantly not your 1959 friendly neighborhood Electrolux man! If that guy took MY vacuum cleaner behind the counter, then REFUSED to give it back, it wouldn't be pretty! Let's say extension poles would be used in ways they were not designed for! 'Hey buddy, get me my vacuum or I'm getting it myself!'. What did you do about it, Clayton?

What I'm strongly considering doing is just going over there Friday afternoon (I don't get off until 4:45 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday) demanding to get my machine back. If be puts up a fight, I'll call the police.
 
He already knows it's mine because I told him I collect vacuum cleaners as soon as I walked in. This is driving me absolutely insane. I've pretty much memorized the Sanitaire parts inventory of sanitairevacparts.com trying to figure out if it would be possible to build my own Sanitaire. For all I know, my machine could be sobbing thinking I deserted it in a strange place, or it could be having party night with all the other vacuum cleaners.
 
Don't worry Clayton.while I'm sure the Sanitare misses you,I'm also pretty sure it's playing a round of cards with the other vacuums there! I heard a Eureka Bravo snuck-in a poker set in 1998. That same Bravo and a Hoover Concept II now host nightly poker matches, but if poker isn't your game, there's bingo in the basement. If you're looking to take it easy, stop by the break-room. Some Electrolux has been serving guests and visitors since it got traded in on a Hoover Convertible in 1982. It got really cool when the break-room got a TV in 1983! You never knew how much vacuums like TV!
