The "spider" is actually the wheel that the separator sits upon. The Spider sits on top of the bearing (on top of the fan in the E series), and spins with the motor. The vanes of the spider wheel set up a small outflow of air, which effectively keeps water being sucked into the motor around the edges of the separator, since there's an outflow of air at that point.

How interesting. I noticed the spider on D4 still cleaned after I cleaned the fans and everything. On E2 2 speed model the fans where the separator sets is little dirty. and I cleaned them and I changed the water often.
