What Would You Have Bought?

WOW Fred!

I just ran the numbers from that ad you posted for the Hoover Model 29 from 1950.

That $87.95 retail price back then would be $827.56 today.

How many people would pay that today for a middle-of-the-road vacuum??

I know exactly what I would have purchased

As I was born in 1954 (OK, I admit it, I am OLD), I would have purchased a fully optioned Electrolux LX or LXI.  In my opinion, those machines were the most beautiful vacuum cleaners ever produced.

Aside from their incredible appearance, they were powerful and built to last.  They were heavy, but what terrific vacuums.

I have two LX vacuums (with the yellow and red logo) and two LXI vacuums.  One of my LXI's has wheels and follows me very easily.  I keep one of them in my laundry room to suck the lint out of my dryer.  They are both in excellent condition and still have very powerful suction after all these years.  I still get a kick out of the way the bag flies out of the back when it reaches capacity.  The Rube Goldberg system is very entertaining.

In my family, we only had Electrolux vacuums.  No Hoovers here!  Sorry John Long.

Re 29 price...

The difference is, the 29 would last you the rest of your life, anything you get now might last 5 or 10 years!!LOL

Born in 1961- Probably a Hoover#68,for downstairs, with the matching blue polisher from Polk Bros,or Goldblatts, they always had good sales on these.A Kenmore box canister, for the stairs, above the floor cleaning,& the car-A 1961 Ford Sunliner convertible,& a Kenmore upright for a spare. As I would have had a Sears charge,& couldn't have resisted one of their cool looking uprights.

I Was Born In 1956

My preferred birth year vacs would have been Electro-Hygiene 285 upright or 966 tank, Hoover 63 or 64, or Electrolux automatic E. Here's my oldest 285.

Here's my Electrolux Automatic E. My paternal Grandparents had one of these, but theirs didn't have the cordwinder. They also added a Filtex several years later. When I was in Jr. High, I used to go to their house with my Aunt, and she would do their laundry (in their Easy washer) and I would vacuum, usually with the Lux. I didn't care much for the Filtex.

Here are a couple more that were produced in 1956. Although they are not on the top of my list, they are worth mentioning. First is the Westinghouse model SC-1 Canister. This one actually belonged to my Aunt Lu, whose husband worked at Westinghouse for many years.

And my maternal Grandmother's model 82 Hoover Constellation. This one was actually built in 1955, as my Grandpa bought it for her for their Anniversary that year, but I do know that they were still produced in 1956. It was actually their last anniversary before he passed away.

Still Wouldn't Buy New

It would have been my first purchase, and there's no reason to think I'd buy new then, when I don't now. Let somebody else take the depreciation hit! So, I probably would have purchased a canister, since I wouldn't have a wife insisting on an upright. I guess a one or two year old Electrolux Automatic E...

Probably a Rainbow D4. Mostly because at that time it would have been one of the few vacuums that filtered extremely well since none of the other high end brands had HEPA filters yet and based on personal experience Rainbows have proven to me that if used properly they won't blow a spec of dust out. The key word is PROPERLY used. The filthy nasty rusty ones vac shops see all the time aren't used or maintained right at all.

it would have been this

same one my parents bought although i was born in 56 i think this machine is a little bit older than me suppose my mum decided she had to have a Hoover before me i love the way this machine takes a second or two to get up to speed and that drone when its running and of course it just gobbles up anything in its path . My grandson had exactly the same reaction as me when he first saw it i will never forget that look of absolute terror

Vacs

I was born in 55,so I think the GE roll around was there, that would have been the one.I liked the Hoover Citation, but I think I was born premature for that one!

1987.... hummm what ones

Hummm so many to chose from, I would have it narrowed down to three models.

1. Kirby Heritage II/ Legend
2. Electrolux Marquise
3. Prolux/ Plus

The funny part is that I currently own the Heritage II and the Prolux....

This is a tough one, being born in 1961 it would either have been an Electrolux Model G with a PN1 power nozzle or a Whirlpool Imperial Mark canister with a power nozzle, both came in my favorite turquoise color.

A Kirby

I was born in the year 2000 so the latest Kirby was a G6. I actually don't like the G6 as much as the G4. My grandma had a G4 and I loved it and I wish that I would be able to pick the G4 but since I was born in 2000 I would have to pick the G6.
