What was Your Worst Vacuum Experience?

I had to use an Electrolux gazelle (like a eureka maxima bagless) and I hated the experience! The belt had snapped, so I had to use the hose- with the USELESS turbo brush thing. You have to bend down to the floor to reach the hose, so not good if you have a bad back!
But however when it works properly it ain't bad. It pulls itself across the floor!

Also I had to use a Panasonic canister and it made my ears hurt. Loud was an understatement. Ear piercing is getting there. Plain unbearable is about right.

Interesting

The argos exploded!?!?!? And the Eureka maxima is the same company as the Electrolux just different divisions of it. So i see where you are coming from

When I started to collect vacuums many moons ago, one of the first machines "given" to me was my parents' old Vax tub canister vacuum, a Powa 1400 watt deep blue vac 3 in 1 machine. A big old thing, great for washing carpets and it was a great all rounder until my parents could no longer drag it along or lift it up. It had lasted 20 odd years and still goes, albeit with a cracked top and a bit taken off the side where the castors go. I use it for sucking up the dirt after I've pressure washed the paving stones (yes, seriously!).

Long before I realised the worth of using a squarer, more rectangular shaped machine on stairs and probably just beginning to get into the art of cleaning, I went about cleaning stairs with the Vax and wondered why no one had attempted to do the stairs before with a round tub! Well I eventually found out the hard way and never to leave a tub at the top of the stairs with you at the bottom and with the hose in the hand!

With a slight tug to the hose, and with my back to the machine, the Vax came tumbling down the flight of carpeted stairs, crashed into me, taking me down face first and ended up knocking myself out on the bottom landing with a huge gash across my left ear as it had cushioned the blow of the impact! The Vax careered into the wall to the left hand side of me, taking a section of plastic off the side of the machine at the top revealing the motor!

To say that I felt like a right TWIT was an understatement. I never attempted to clean stairs again with a round tub vacuum cleaner, even with Henry and his longer hose!

my kenmore whispertone blew up and then cought on fire the hood melted not on the tile but the funny thing is i just picked up from getting serviced the day before and its went back two times for the same issue

I was using a purple and green DC04 which was mine and I accidently stepped on the cable cus I wasn't holding it, and it fell out with loads of sparks and the electric 240 volt cable nearly hit my foot! I nearly died.

I had a DC03 standard and the cable had a naked wire, I tried to fix it and it sparked!!!
I had a DC01 standard YDK and it was burning it and it sounded like it was drowning and then it stinked and was loud!!! and smoked a little bit.

I vacuumed up ash with my DC04 outside in the garden without a filter, I also left the post filter in, when I checked that, it was all dusty so I used with out any filter, turned it on and the whole garden was full of smoke!!! In the morning i turned it on, and it died. :(

I had a blue and purple DC07 allergy from a carboot, my Dad helped me fix it as the motor was burnt out, we cleaned it up all shiny new, the brush was hairy, motor airy, cyclone hairy, filter hairy everything!! we took the motor out and tried to run it, my Dad told me to switch it on and it smoked SO MUCH!!!!!!!! and had an electrical smell, after that we just left it and got a new motor for the DC07 :)
My Dad ordered the 1600w motor for me non genuine but cleaned great and was quieter!

When I met the mrs, she had a Hoover Alyx. Nice machine to look at, but my god it was awful! Didn't pick anything up despite good airflow, I stripped it down and rebuilt it and it was still awful. It's at her mums now!

Another one, we were at my friends parents holiday home (without his parents, was a drunken mess of a week!), with deep pile carpets. The vacs to choose from were an old hitachi cylinder, and a DC04. After battling with the Hitachi, my friend pulls the DC04 out, and I express my delight and get to work clearing up. Turn it on, drop the head and.....it had a dead clutch. Que scrubbing the deep pile of this carpet with the Hitachi for hours on end. I gave them a Henry a few years ago and got good feedback from it.

As for explosive vacs, I had a Vax 2000 once, can't remember where I found it but I plugged it in and it exploded with a purple flash. OK, I thought, go back inside for some fresh underwear, got met by my stepdad asking if I knew anything about the bang and scorch marks from the fusebox, and why we had no power.

Turns out (partly due to old house wiring) that when the vac went bang, it surged from the garage phase into the house and took the old fuse out with a bang. My stepdad went through a period of running a multimeter over everything I bought home after that. I never did find out why the Vax exploded, it hastily got taken to the tip!

I have a black hoover alyx, got it for £2 at a carboot sale and it had a burnt out motor! Now its in the garden.

my worst

My worst experience was with a Kenmore baless canister vacuum. They clog very easy and the filter is not removable. Also I accidentally stepped on the hose and it crushed.
