Did someone make this ? Is it a prototype design ?

It looks like a form mold for when they are making the final metal cast of the vacuum. You make the form from wood, then cast it into plaster, then use the plaster mold to form the metal shell to make the final cast. It would have had a top half too I'm sure that was separately cast.

Was likely factory trash from the R&D department and someone saved it.

That's my interpretation of what it is. If you google "wooden foundry mold" you'll see a lot of similar things.
