Been organizing

I’ve been organizing closets and since I’ve spent a lot of time here on this site, I’ve been organizing some of my Supply of parts and bags. I mostly have a large supply of Electrolux stuff some nicely in tubs, one tub is overloaded and there were a few random cardboard boxes and bags with parts too that still need to be sorted through and stored better in a tub. Also There’s still more thinning and organizing to do. I once bought a bulk supply of parts off eBay because it contained a lot of new power nozzle brushes and new belts and new sheath cords which were well worth the purchase alone, but a lot of other parts were included such as motor parts, etc and I really just need to go through all of this stuff and likely throw away the parts I know I won’t ever use such as the motor parts. There are several used plastic wand power nozzle elbows too included. I only have one machine that uses this plastic wand neck so not sure I should keep much of it, maybe 1 or 2.

But I’m making progress. Slowly but surely as I get bored doing the organizing as there’s so much stuff to put away still but it’s all very random. And this is not the vacuum stuff I’m talking about. But as I’m trying to get all of the stuff I want to keep put away somewhere, I also am finding myself emptying out shelves and closets of things I have that I’m deciding I don’t really need and while it’s perfectly good stuff, always having a box to deposit these things for donation makes it easier to part with stuff so I don’t feel as though I’m throwing away good things that I spent money on.

I don’t have a basement and we have only a small single car garage which stores a car and my remodeling tools and supplies, so it is difficult to fit everything in closets and cabinets but the reality is if I can’t fit it in such places, then I’m saving too much and something must go. I know that if I didn’t have the vacuum collection that would free up space, but fortunately the spares are all Electrolux canisters which can be disassembled and stored on closet shelves and attachments in tubs, wands in a tall box, I even have 4 hoses in a spare file cabinet drawer And so on so things fit nicely in my small walk in closet.

I have a second closet I could not get to because I was given a beautiful long solid wood coffee table that was thousands when it was new and it was standing on its end up against the closet door...I finally found a better storage space for the table today and now I can get into that closet to clean it out. Unfortunately there is no room for the table in the house at the moment but I may disassemble the legs and store it under the bed in my guest bedroom.

I obtained a lot of stuff because a very good friend, who was renting a house I purchased (for her to rent) passed away and she had only one son who lives clear across the country and didn’t want much of any of her things except about a car load which I packed up into her car and shipped the entire car with the items to her son. The rest of it was sold at a big sale we had, donated or saved to come home with me. After that, we had to downsize my partner’s parents From 3600 square feet to 1750 square feet...after several sales and donations and more came home. I ended up with two rooms and a bathroom full of boxes of stuff from both my friend and my partners family and had to weed through a lot of it to determine so we really want this stuff as a lot was good useful stuff...office supplies...nice dishes, extra kitchen wares and so on. A lot ended up getting parted with to family members and more got donated and how some of it ended up getting brought home is beyond me but somehow at the time I thought I wanted it, and other stuff, just didn’t ever get donated so somehow it ended up home.

It’s been a long time of going through boxes, sending pictures to local family if they can use or want it, then logging the unwantables for donation.

There was even a death of my partner’s Aunt who lived with his parents during all of this and she had 3 10x10 storage units full of stuff from when she had a house years before I had to deal with as well. The stuff had been in storage for 21 years...it mostly was junk by now and very, very, very dirty. At 21 years of storage at $286 a month...you do the math...it was a good realization that storage units are a total waste of money unless needed for a short period of time to store highly valuable items.

So I’ve just been dealing with emptying more and more stuff out of our house so we only have what fits in closets, the garage with a car, and a bit in the attic that can handle a hot attic in Texas summer heat.

We don’t like to live like hoarders with stuff stored in plain sight...everything must have its place in a closet, cabinet, or drawer...or we simply are saving too much is our policy. It’s a good one to have though because if you don’t when you have to move or downsize, it’s a nightmare. Both my friend and partner’s parents were on the brink of hoarding with stuff piled in corners, half their two car garages were packed to the gills with valueless junk while the much more valuable car was outside exposed to blazing summer heat, and hail storms.

The American Dream turned nightmare is what I call it. We Americans just always want new and more stuff but many never get rid of the old stuff, instead it piles up in closets, garages, attics until they are full then encroaches on home interiors and rooms and some even put useless old junk into storage units and pay good money to store items they could just rebuy in the future when they need them.

My Parents are relatively organized people but at the same time, I observe that they have a garden shed, two car garage, and full a full basement under their house. So the garden shed houses all of the gardening items neatly, the garage has the car, and some other things, the basement storage areas have all sorts of other things such as holiday decorations, and other things they’ve managed to collect over the years...fortunately they have been slowly working on deleting the collection of stuff they have stored so when they pass..it won’t be so much work for us to have to deal with. They are trying to really only keep what they use and I’m taking direct cues from this now...years ago, when I lived with them growing up, they would save a lot more things and stuff it in the basement storage area and it got to be a lot of stuff...but now they’ve realized, they should work on eliminating a lot of it. My Father still has a collection of at least a dozen golf clubs but he can’t play golf anymore. He managed to get most of them free except his primary set he bought...we don’t know why he continues to save these sets...I get that it is his hobby to obtain nice sets but no one else in the family plays golf so isn’t it time he just give them back away? If he doesn’t we will in the future just to get them out of the basement.

I do hope that the collection of 10 vacuum cleaners I have I will use up over time or pass on to people I like. The 10 does include daily drivers which is 4... one lives in the garage for cars and remodeling projects outside our home, a small canister lives in a cabinet in our master bath as we cut our own hair and use it then, but could get away without that one and I have two different ones I like to use to clean the house with regularly depending on my mood or needs, these two are an Electrolux canister and a Shark rocket. The remainders are all Electrolux canister and 1 Shark rocket hand held unit I ended up getting completely free as a refurbished unit. I’d like to avoid getting any more because I am satisfied with the collection I have and the quantity as well. I don’t desire for much else but perhaps a better attachment or hose here and there to improve what I have but I’m almost there as I recently found a hard to find hose I wanted for one of my machines.

I’ve managed to also collect a lot of clothing and jeans in various styles and finishes but that collection is going to have to be thinned as well as there are things I just will never wear again and it’s time for another clean out which will allow for better organization of the things I do like.

Well break time from organizing is over...back to work!

I've been doing a lot of little odds and ends around the house.

-Tighten the kitchen sink faucet valve.

-Clean the dryer vent (only half done).

-Add an outlet in the same box as a light switch in the basement (the only outlet was for the washer/dryer)

-Properly installed light fixture in the basement that'd been hanging loose (box, fixture, conduit, and all) since we moved in.

-Fixed an old metal box fan I found in the trash over a year ago. Blades were hitting the motor, I thought it was bad / missing thrust washers... the blade's set screw was just loose. Oh the crap people throw away for the dumbest little reasons. Completely dismantled, cleaned, and oiled it anyway. Now I have a very sturdy little box fan. :)

-Finally got around to doing a real inspection on the 1941 Lincoln (Royal) straight suction vacuum that I got from an auction paired with that Eureka Model 10 that was in (mostly) good working order. It's mostly fine, but needs a cord and brushes badly. One brush was worn out sideways O_o. I put it in 180 degrees off, so now as the motor spins, it pushes the brush against its good side. Machine works pretty well. It has issues but at least I can use it for funzies now.

-Cadillac vacuum... no, it's nowhere near being down yet. Actually this lockdown has put a hold on it, since I can't get the bag screen printed now. The front bearing was bad (sintered bronze), I was just going to live with it, but a while back I picked up a Packard motor for parts. Its front bearing is maybe 80% ok, which is better than the 10% ok of the Cadillac. I imagine that's because the Packard did not have a belt riding on it for decades. Removed the Packard bearing, took it to the shop and force-oiled it under vacuum for a few hours, then swapped the bearings around. I'd like to keep the Packard motor complete, but it has no vacuum to go to, so it is for parts, after all.

-Dismantled a random shop vac I'd found in the trash over a year ago. It worked, but it made noise like a bad bearing. It was absolutely CAKED in drywall dust everywhere inside it. Seriously looks like a drywaller was using it for years without any kind of filter. So it got completely dismantled and every inch cleaned. Also the fan case and all the screw heads were rusty, like it'd been used as a wet vac very often. Replaced all screws with stainless. Ordered 2 new ball bearings - Ametek motor, btw - and yes, I got the cheapest skate board bearings I could find. The fan case was rusted on to the bakelite base, had to fight that. Also had a hard time removing the little bearing, had to take it to the shop and use a puller. Will be posting about this vac, I just finished it today.

Was the outlet before or after the switch. Was the washer/dryer a 220 line or 110?
I've organized my vacuums a few times.
I have 2 outlets I need to fix. I patched 2 holes in the wall. The door didn't have a door stop.
I went rock hunting and root beer calcite onyx.
I did yearly tune up on our Craftsman riding lawnmower and our 2 Honda push mowers. I blew leaves with backpack leaf blower for two hours.
Mowed the lawn twice and edged.
I wish I'd get days off paid but I'm still working.
I was at my car about to get in my vehicle. I use my key fob to lock then unlock. It only locked and battery was dead. I opened the door and alarm went off. I opened the hood and it went off again. I disconnected the battery to hopefully disengage the alarm but that didn't work. I cut what I thought was the power wire to alarm. It was the speaker for
Or it.
I need to get 2 2016 batteries and reconnect everything I disconnected.
I have been in the archives on here quite a bit.
I brought a small emtor for my Kirby 3c. I got a bag for one of my omegas. I also found my omega patch.
I'm going to put my TriStar cxl power nozzle. I'm going to see if my motor is toast in. My rainbow power nozzle.
I do work but the staying home is boring. I want to go biking on the trail behind my house. The problem is everybody is on it. Utah has Mormons and Mormons have lots of kids. It's a free range state so 3 year old Mikey is being watched by his 5 year old sister. Kids love to stop and throw rocks in the river. I used to get annoyed but the kids are throwing rocks the city put on the city side. There throwing to our side of the river. Telling kids no doesn't work. Then they do it to spite you.
That is all I can think of for now.

Les - the switch is for the crawlspace lights, it was a 2 gang box with a 1 gang mud ring on it, and it's by the crawlspace door. In that area, there's a bunch of tools and stuff. I have a lot of electrical stuff laying around (in the crawlspace) so I dug out an outlet, a 2 gang mud ring, and snipped a couple of short jumper wires off the spools. Now it has a 2 gang ring, with an outlet and the switch. Which circuit it's on is of no concern, since it'll only be used for temporary things.

Half of the basement is my bedroom. So when I say 'basement' I mean the half that is not my room. The washer outlet is 120v, 2 gang (one of my earliest modifications). It powers the washer, dryer, and the basement fridge and stove via extension cords, annoyingly. At some point I need to put an outlet by the fridge, but that's a bigger project. Second pic is the light fixture I finally attached to the rafters.

I had all these

"Rainy day projects" waiting for the rain we barely got this year. So now that I'm stuck inside for most of the day I'm getting a lot done. Problem is, any repairs that require my running over to Home Depot or similar for parts or supplies is thwarted by the fact they are only selling "essential" items. No paint, no potting soil, hardly anything I needed to start or complete a project was available . They aren't selling to contractors. As for ordering on line, the projected delivery date is double or triple the norm. I ordered a book from Amazon which will take 3 weeks to get. I'm not a prime member so any shorter delivery would cost 12.95 which is almost what the book cost. So 5.95 and I wait. @madman, Is your section of the basement "finished?" I ask because I moved (mostly) up in to the attic where I used to live for a couple winter months so a relative could stay there for that time. I live in Calif. and even so, there were some cold nights. I ended up making temporary adjustments to the attic with extra insulation and walling off the "bedroom area" and a portable heater. Given where you live I was just curious what your situation is when the snow starts piling up etc. I imagine when the dryer is running that's a boost in heat. How do you cope with the winter?

First of all, I am very blessed that I'm in a line of work where I was able to easily transition to working at home so I'm keeping busy and my income is uninterrupted. Summer classes will also be online and the plan is for us to be back to business as usual by the time the fall semester starts in August. We'll see how that shakes out.

That said, I have been making time for a few projects.

•I put the finishing touches on the Kirby Heritage 1HD I had been working on for most of the month of March. I converted it from a dump bag to style 2 bags using a Heritage II style mini-emptor setup.

• A few days ago, I updated my Sanitaire SC686 from its original dump bag to a Eureka F&G setup. Can we detect a pattern here?

• A week ago, I rescued an Electrolux Diplomat Lx from beside a dumpster, serviced the power nozzle, hose and wand, and ordered a replacement cord winder. I wish I could say it was back together and running but that will have to wait a bit since the mail carrier was to lazy yesterday to finish his route. Tracking showed it was out for delivery yesterday but when the mail hadn't come by 7:30 p.m., I checked and tracking showed that my mail was being held at the post office "at the customer's request". I call B.S. on that one. I never requested for my mail to be held. The capper was when I took a little ride up my street a few minutes later, I saw half a dozen of my neighbors' mailboxes had their little red flags sticking up, indicating their outgoing mail had not been picked up. Conclusion: the carrier never went up my street yesterday. So now I've got to go to the post office tomorrow and pick up this package because the carrier was too slack to do his job. Can you tell I'm a little provoked by this?

• In other areas, I mowed my yard Friday for the first time this year so it would look decent for Easter. I'm pretty slack when it comes to yard work and might mow five or six times all summer but always start 'mowing season' the week of Easter.

• I bought an electric chainsaw to cut up some large fallen limbs and take down a small, dead tree in order to be able to mow. I figured it's paid for itself with what I saved over getting a tree service to do it.

• I've been trying to get a walk in at least every other day and my red convertible (1995 Cutlass Supreme) has been a great means of escape. I can enjoy fresh air, sunshine and a change of scenery while maintaining a social distance. And with gorgeous weather, dirt cheap gas and nobody on the road, it's a true convertible trifecta.

i tried to get my lux 1205 running but no luck

i just won another electrolux ambassador (blue body & beige trim with blue electrolux lettering) bcuz i miss the plastic electrolux 75th anniversary ambassador (white body & grey trim with red electrolux lettering on side bumpers)

@kirbyklekter - My half of the basement is completely finished. It's nice and cozy. About 14'x25'. As the house was built (1948 post-war split level ranch) it would have been a family or bonus room. At some point, someone walled up around the stairs down, and added a door, and a another wall to make a closet, and thus it was a bedroom. Then, someone added a wall in the middle to divide it into two bedrooms (I removed that wall). Given that, a couple other things, and the fact that all 3 upstairs bedroom doors have keyed doorknobs on them, I believe this house was used as a tenement - renting all the rooms out.

Fortunately, being a split level, the basement is so high up that it never floods - a problem for many Chicago houses. My room is also insulated from the exterior walls, so it retains heat (or cold) pretty well, as long as I keep the door closed. It has two vent registers on the ceiling, but I sometimes run a space heater in winter to warm it up a couple degrees. My only complaint is that, every morning, the dog comes in and leaves the door open... flooding my room with all the house's cold air that's trying to sink to the lowest point. That also happens in summer when the A/C is on. That's really the only comfort problem. I'm considering getting a doggy door. The video link below is my room just after we moved in.

I'm surprised your Home Depot is only selling 'essential' items. I just went to mine the other day, for the first time in weeks, and it was a little strange. They have you wait in line to get in, so there's only X amount of people in the store at a time. And of course, everyone in line is 6 feet apart, so the line looks really long, but it's not. And there are signs literally EVERYWHERE telling you to social distance. They didn't seem to be discriminating on what to sell, though. State rules, I guess?

Nice work on the plug and switch. The light looks solid too. I wired our unfinished basement. It's almost 2000 sf and I wired a 50 amp 220w hot tub.
The basement has 2 outlets on each wall. I also split coaxial cable giving each room 2 outlets. I did this because if you want to rearrange your not limited on where to has to go.
If you had any flood you just cut open those bags of quickcrete you would have a nice barrier rather quickly.
Les

@Les - nice! That's a big basement. Hot tub in the basement? Mine is small to begin with as the house is a split level (half the house has a crawlspace), and then half my basement is my room. The crawl space is equal the size of the whole basement, and it's clean and high enough that you can get around easily, I have a TON of crap stored in there. Where that light is, used to be a bathroom. Don't get me started on that. Some day I'll get around to rebuilding it.

I haven't done much of anything but try and get my house organized, rearrange the furniture and try out new plans, put stuff into the eBay pile that I don't need, and clean up expired food that I have in my basement day by day.

I hope to get the garage cleared out this summer so I can get my vacuum workshop all set up and going for myself.

Not sure if anyone here plays or collects videogames but once all this corona stuff quits for the summer and the scrapyards open back up I'm gonna recycle all these cans that have piled up since last summer and use the money to buy that new Animal Crossing game for the Nintendo Switch :D

Have kept busy cleaning, yard work the gardener ignores and upped my walking course to about double! Currently slowing some, that increase in distance made the legs complain some! I think I maxed out, for now around 8-9 miles!

I've still been partly working but I love reading and have a lot there I want to tackle....running a business means accounting and paperwork and tax crap....lots of that still to do. Only minor working on vacuums so far...gonna rewire the worn out power cord issue on my Hoover 61, polishing a Kirby EARLY Model C, repolished my Kirby 505, rotating my vacuum usage of course, changed some of my cars' oil, got back into yoga 'work outs' with the wife...dang it makes us feel old...too tight!! sheesh. As soon as this winter blast we got yesterday blows out ( will be here most all the week) I wanna work on my old classic cars more!

I've been doing all the cooking for myself and my husband - 3 meals a day. Thank God for my vintage KitchenAid Superba. I've been working on my gallery of hoovers that I got from Eric last year. I've mostly been using my new Modern Day SilentMaster that I had put in right before the virus hit. Two motors with three revolving fans each. Talk about the suction. Goodbye to the dust and filth in my face when I empty the Vacuflo. Hello to the True Seal Hepa bag. I switch it out with my Miele Gemini, one of my all time favorite vacuums.

Yes on the deck out is a very nice hot tub. It's 7x7 I think it's an 8 person hot tub. I used a cord from the junction box to the hot tub. It cost a pretty penny but it's worth it.
Im not a fan of crawl spaces. I live close to Utah lake. I'm guessing 2.5 miles away. If you head towards it from my house a mile or 1.5 miles from the lake there is no basements because of the water level. If you ever go underneath a house on your back with no basement holy smokes it's scary. There's spiders which doesn't bother me. There is like rat droppings dead rats amongst other things.
I was going to ask wherys your vacuums are. I imagine their in the crawlspace.
I'm on a tangent I'm going to keep going for a little bit. This house that is a couple blocks away from me is sweet. When houses around here were being built you could go inside and look. This house had a 3 car garage. They framed the basement the same height as upper floors which is 10 feet.
Underneath the garage was a movie room. The cool thing was it was under the garage and its walls floor and ceiling was all concrete. It had projector, slope and three rows of movie theater seats. It's like a setup you see on cribs or lifestyles of the rich and famous.
Les

Les - nah, my crawlspace is nice. Concrete floor, several lights, we cleaned it before we moved in, and it's tall enough that you can sit on the floor and not bump your head. My grandpa's crawlspace was about the same height, but it hand a sand floor, and yes there were dead mice, it was dark, and it kinda sucked being down there. I have a lot of stuff in the crawlspace, no vacs as of yet, but they would be fine down there.
