I always thought most vacuum dealers would decorate their store to attract customers into looking at their products. So just for fun I decided I wanted to show where I currently go to now and see what they have in the inside of their store and very curious to see what everyone else's looks like.

So my store is a Simplicity, Lindhaus, Carpet pro, Fuller brush, Sanitaire, Maytag (hear they may not sell that brand for much longer), and Hoover dealer. They used to sell Royal, Riccar, Eureka, Dirt Devil, and Bissell (They quit selling a month now) a long time ago. I like it but I wish my old vacuum store was still in business.

There's another store in my town that's only a Sanitaire dealer and I never like that place so I will never go there again.

Bissells!

I see they rent out the Bissell Big greens, those are excellent carpet cleaners! It is unusual to see them in a vac shop though every place i've been to either carries Rug Doctor or in one Case a Riccar branded machine.

A vacuum only store you say?

We have a few left. Fewer than before the recession.
One does mainly repairs on vacs and sewing machines, and has lots of used and older parts.
One other is part of a chain, and sells mainly high end Miele, Riccar/Simplicity, Sebo, Beam, Canavac, etc.
There are a couple of Oreck shops as well.

vacuum stores

It seems like vacuum stores are becoming fewer and far between. We don't have any major ones that I know of in the St. Louis city or county area, you have to go to Franklin County or the Crystal City for the closest major ones. That's why vacuum manufacturers need to get on board with selling their products on line. Many have done that, but some such as Tacony and Lindhaus are still behind the times in that area. Aerus and Rainbow are the same way.

No vac stores :(

Sadly we don't have separate vacuum cleaner stores in the Finland. Plenty of Hifi audio stores, but no vacuum stores. All vacuums what we buy is from the Walmart style stores and from the internet.. Exception is the Lux and Kirby. Those are sold by door to door salesman.
Picture of the typical Internet vacuum cleaner site.

Mike

I' couldn't disagree with you more. These vacuum store owners have invested theirs savings into their businesses , only to have the company, who's products they're selling put them out of business.
Tacony is doing the right thing for its dealers by having inflated prices on its website.

LOL

"My local vacuum shop looks like a Goodwill"

We have some like that here too.

I have another favorite vacuum store from when I lived in Madison, it's called St. Vincent DePaul.- Dig and Save.  Vacs are $5.  Problem is when I asked the clerk how much they charge for repairs they said they don't do that.  (?)   Oh, they also sell other stuff, too..... don't know what's up with that.

Mike-

You have door-to-door sales people.  I don't know that anyone here does that anymore.

I can't imagine a world without a vacuum store.   I guess I was spoiled growing up with such.  Though in fairness many are since gone.

Well we never had a vacuum stores. Best store to buy a new vacuum is a home appliance store. They actually know their products. But the internet auction sites are where I have bought my latest vacuums. I mean you can get very good deals. For example my Kärcher CV36/2 (SEBO BS36) Upright 40 euros and my Lux D790 Royal 30 euros. Both in excellent condition and very expensive when these were new.

Delaneymeegan,

I don't know about you but we still have plenty of door to door Kirby and Rainbow salesmen in my area here in eastern Massachusetts. They must be successful here if they've been in business since i've lived here for almost 10 years now.

Mike-  I agree about shopping online.  When I restarted my vacuum collection in October 2015, most all of it has been from online activity.  I'm so grateful.  Wish I had that years ago.

Stan-  I always forget about those.  It's not my genre'.  I'm guessing we have those too.  I guess my point is pre-Aerus Electrolux and some of the smaller brands like Filter Queen, Airway, etc.

A vac store that has been owned by the same person for 35 years, I was talking with him about changes.  He says the small stores are evaporating at an alarming rate, and the people he used to get his used stock from, like Kirby dealers are also disappearing.  Frankly, I'm amazed anyone would pay more than a few hundred for a new Kirby.

I wonder if Eureka, Hoover, and  Kenmore were ever sold Door to door.

Vacerator

Being in Harrison twp and you in macomb what specific stores and flea markets do you go to? Because there are a few parts I may be able to find there that I may not be able to get at my goto store, Bell Sweeper Co. Speaking of Bell Sweeper, Bill there was able to rebuild the motor of my Hoover model 28 in 10 minutes not including the stuck on fan. It was like that skill was in his DNA.

Richard,

Try Gabriels vacuum repair, and SAV Sew and Vac on Van Dyke in Utica between Hall rd. and 21 mile. Gabriels has a second store at 181/2 and old Van Dyke. Also ABC vac repair at 12 mile and Ryan.
I have not been to Gibralter Trade center in a long while, but there may be some there?
I was at the County line flea mkt. last weekend. Dequindre N. of 8 mile. It's a bit seedy, but there is a vacuum and parts booth (pile) in the far right rear corner from the entrance.
So the south east corner of the building.
The vendor is a stuborn foreigner, but you can try and deal with him.
Lots of Kirby and filter queen parts, etc.

buying on line

Miskini, you can disagree if you wish, but the companies are responding to what the public wants. Selling things on line is the way of the future, and if a consumer cannot get what they want and purchase it the way they want to, they will look elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, I think a dealer has its place, some people want to go in and have a look at a product before buying it, and there are times when that's a very wise thing to do. But there are others who know what they want, and just want to order it and have it delivered. Companies like Sebo, Miele, Kenmore, and Electrolux offer both options. Companies need to sell their products in the ways that consumers want to purchase them, or they will loose business.

Richard,

I forgot the best store for used vacuums, Salvation Army.
There is also another weekend flea market on ten mile close to Dequindre east of it.
