Hello

I saw my mother last night who is considering getting another vacuum.
My mum currently has a Miele cylinder which is fine but she would prefer an upright as being 73 & none too good on her legs an upright gives her something to hang onto, whereas a cylinder & hose can be a bit of trip hazard for her whilst in use.
Her & my dad live in a small 1 bed bungalow & whilst I know physically size wise a cylinder is better suited, mum always had upright vac's in the past & would be happier with one now.
So, do you guys (& girls) have any suggestions as to a new vacuum mum could get in the up to around £160.00 mark? I'm not really sure which upright is best as my interest is mainly Henry's !
Many thanks for any help
Dave

Hi Dave,

Sebo are probably the best uprights you can get, but they can be quite heavy to use, so I probably wouldn't recommend that avenue.

Are your folks wanting a bagged or bagless upright? Argos currently have the Vax Mach Air Reach on sale at £99.99. It's a VERY lightweight machine but also powerful. Could be ideal.

If they're wanting bagged, the basic Panasonic uprights are ok - they retail for about £80 and are quite nice to use.

Hope this helps.

Chris

Hi all
There's some great suggestions here, many thanks all for your help on this, I really appreciate it.
Cheers
Dave :-)

For my mom it was more about how easy for her to use and how heavy than how well it cleaned! I guess we all get there, she is mid 80s. Most times she uses the Hoover LiNX and the lightweight Dirt Devil, yes, she picked it.

A Dyson DC59 would be lightweight, picks up as much dust as a pull size vacuum, has easy storage, has a 20 min runtime, if she wants something slightly better, the DC25 or DC24 is a better alternative to the DC50 as they can last longer, come with a 5 year warranty, clean good, are light, are more sturdier than the new Dysons (disgusting)
They groom the carpet, have a low wattage but still the cyclonic no loss of suction power as long as they keep the filters clean every 3 months

Hello
Yes I'm afraid that a Dyson would be well out of the price range, ideally £100.00 would be the top but mum would go to £160.00 at a push.
I do like the look of the Vax models as they're also light in weight & whilst mum has no stairs to contend with, light weight has to be good at her age.
I'm going to go to Curry's & some other shops tomorrow to have a look.
Cheers for all this, it's really helped.
Happy weekend
Dave

The best light upright I've tried so far is the Panasonic MC-UG522 bagged upright Vacuum Cleaner. It isn't as yet available from Argos but it is available from Amazon UK. It is now £66 which is a great price from what I paid, originally.

Only has a single drive belt compared to the white Panasonics at Argos. It is also lighter and easy to push. I loved the Oreck style handle on it.

Hi again.
Sorry to ask again, but are Hoover PurePowers any good? My mum has been looking in the Argos catalogue & as we always had Hoovers years ago, she still likes them.
I know that Hoover have turned out some junk at times but is the 2000w PurePower bagged upright at £79.99 any good? It's probably heavier than I would have gone with but, it's her choice.
Thanks again
Dave

I can't abide them. I find them too heavy to push and thats even with the height selector dial. They're also noisy and blow a lot of hot air out the front. If I had the choice between a Hoover Purepower and the Panasonic uprights, I'd take Panasonic every time.

Thanks for that Sebo-fan, I must admit I'm not crazy about her getting a Hoover. I personally like the Panasonics, in particular the MC-UG302WP47. Their house is all carpeted (except the kitchen which is vinyl/lino), so I think it would probably be fine (it's also in Argos nearby). I'll also look at the MC-UG522 but it would be easier if it were in Argos, just in case there's any problems with it.
Only thing bothering me with the MC-UG302WP47 is some negative reviews on Amazon.
I also like the Vax ones but the Panasonic looks more traditional (IMO cool) & possibly tougher. Whilst weight bothers me a bit, I know when handling an upright Vacuum mum will treat it like the old 1960's Hoover Senior we had when I was a kid, i.e. it might have to be rugged !
Cheers
Dave

My mum has that Panasonic. She can't lift anything heavy and gets on fine with it.

From a collector point of view, they are simple to service, quite powerful in 1900w form and have cheap consumables. Picks up very well on all her different carpets, although the tools are a slight pain, almost better to use them like a sebi, ie keep the machine in one hand and use the tools with the other.

Can also be peanuts new. I pulled hers out of a skip and refurbed it, although it didn't need a return.

Will be much better than the cheap hoover and Vax uprights anyway.

One thing that bothers me...

Rutger  - I don't know what link you are looking at on Amazon UK. The one that I'm looking at now shows 108 five star ratings compared to just 11 for one star. Some of the 1 star reviews relate to a "used-good" condition Panasonic upright, which doesn't surprise me in the least.

You can buy the same model at Argos: Product code 406/4406 for £79-50 or the black one, product code 406/5543.

I had to laugh at some of the reviews on Amazon UK as one owner moaned that the cord was too short - which means they would really hate Miele cylinder vacs since this Panasonic has 6.7metres of cord. Hoover fit 6.5 metres, so you're not getting that much of a short cord.

Whilst those Panasonics have been on the market for longer, I bought the newer bagged upright only last year and sold it onto a friend who was in dire need of a bagged upright in a home full of carpet and cleaning up after two cats.

Though the burgundy MG-UG522 doesn't come with a small turbo brush as standard, it doesn't do a bad job as a main upright vacuum cleaner. It is also a tad lighter than the white and black models and has an Eco-friendly 1200 watt motor.

I did a video of it. Bear in mind, mine cost £120 at the time and the current £60 is a far better price when putting up with some of its downsides. However as a general carpet upright Id pick it over Hoover's Purepower and the Electrolux Powerlite uprights, especially at the £60 asking price. The white/black models benefit from slightly thicker plastics though.
