Hey guys, I know we like to sometimes post pics of vacuum displays in stores when we see them, so I took a few at Target today. I tried to get some at Best Buy, but the employees kept giving me dirty looks, so the ones I got of the displayed floor models are too blurry to post.... I did get a one of some of the boxed machines. The only things notable at Best Buy were that Hoover has some new bare floor steamers out (I saw those on their web site), with triangular shaped heads like the old Dirt Devil stick vacs (I guess Dirt Devil cant sue Hoover for that since they are owned by the same company.... did TTI ever sell Hoover off?). There is a canister and an upright model. They are still selling the Lynx stick vac which is the only one of the Platinum Series left it seems... they did have one boxed Platinum bagged light weight upright, on clearance in an aisle not even close to the vacuums. Some of the Dysons were also separated from the other vacuums and instead right at the end cap behind the Geek Squad. I noticed something horrible though.... while the new stick vac has an electric power nozzle, the "baby Dyson" canister (DC26?) only has a turbine head... I thought for sure it had a real power nozzle... but because of this, I no longer want one!

I was curios about one thing though.... Best Buy did have several Electroluxes (the Versatility, an orange (what's up with all the orange vacuums?) bagless canister with a turbo nozzle, and 2 Ergo Rapidos)... one of the Ergo Rapidos was orange, and the other was bronze colored with a window over the brushroll and that one was more expensive than the orange one, what is the difference? Best Buy did also have an LG Kompressor upright in the box only (not one for display) with the Hoover Platinum light weight bagged, again, not even near the vacuum section. Maybe they are rearranging or ran out of room with the other vacuums...

Target had nothing to be impressed with... they had too many steam mops, but they also have a ton of pretty awful uprights... the only thing I'd even consider there would be the Dysons.... Wal-mart now has a better selection of vacuums than Target, and that wasn't always true. I was horrified to see that the Oreck is the only bagged machine they even offer now! Mostly cheap bagless Dirt Devils and Bissells... Wal-mart sells the Rug Doctor, the Bissell Canister, a better Hoover Canister, the new Hoover Nano Lite Cyclonic, the Eureka Smart Vac (which is probably their only bagged machine now... maybe they have a Hoover T series too, not sure).... so weird!

By the way, did anyone notice that Black and Decker now has a floor steamer as well? I guess that is the current fad!

Here are the Best Buy boxes...

target 1

target.... they have the steam vacs first now... before, the Dysons were first and the steam vacs were at the end... I was astonished at the sheer number of vacuums they had, too bad most of them aren't very good.... it was almost overwhelming! It seems like when they had less machines, they had better ones.

Nice display but I tend to have to agree with gotahaveahoover I personally prefer the classics to the modern vacs. Zach

ok....

theres only one bagged machine in that WHOLE isle.....and its a Oreck of all things.....LORD!

I think of all of the Vacuums in the Target display-the only one I would consider is that Oreck. They can keep the plastivac bagless dumpster vacuums. They look pretty in that display-but use 'em several times they look pretty icky.

Where's the "curb applea"?

So many of those vacuums are absolute monstrosities. They're not beautiful to me. The best-looking machine in that photo is the Dyson DC-35. Half of the rest of them look like something that would wander around killing people in Jabba the Hutt's house or worse.

Gimme Tacony, Sebo, Kirby, Aerus, and Miele, please.

Ok, so how many of you guys put the machines back together at target? I find them a mess every visit. Bins taken off, attachments with wrong machine, you name it.

I DO! Haha, I do it at my local Wally World while people go by and look at me weird, I don't care.

It just annoys the heck outta me when parts are missing and no where to be found.

I remember making a bee-line for the vacuum aisle whenever I went to Target to see the latest Hoover Convertibles, Dialamatic, Portable, or the General Electric uprights and swivel-top canister.  I look at what's on display now and just shake my head.  Some of these new bagless vacs are so big and cumbersome looking they make a new Kirby seem petite!

Let's not forget that most of these "made in China plastique" machines will probably end up in the trash after about 6 months of use. I remember as a kid just loving to go the vacuum section at either Service Merchandise, BEST, Monkey Wards or Target and there would be lots of Hoover Convertibles and F&G Eureka's. Those were the days. Now I pretty much ignore the vacuum sections at Target etc.

The ONLY current vacs at dept. stores that I like

Hoover FloorMATE (prefer w/tools)
Hoover Steam Vac Classic SpinScrub
Dyson dc23 TurbineHead
Eureka 'The Boss' Smart Vac

Generally, I wouldn't buy any vacs made after 1984. Starting in 1985, most vac mfrs' quality declined greatly.

'Hoover, as we knew it, "has been history" since 1985'

I'd rather have a new Lux Classic, Filter Queen, TriStar MG3 or Kirby any day over dept. store "plasti-vacs"

I would agree, the only vacuum that would interest me is the Oreck!!!

Everything is bagless....not one I would want as a main vacuum for my house..not even the Dysons.

I am surprised there is a canister on the line.....what is it? We don't have any canisters at our Target.

Wal-Mart carries a Eureka bagged, a Bissell bagged and an Eureka/Electrolux bagless...canister.

And both Target and Wal-Mart only carry generic bags...

What is the world coming to.

Morgan, they had 3 canisters.... a straight suction bagless Dirt Devil, a Dyson Turbinehead something or other and a cheap bagless Hoover with power nozzle... I think it's like the one Chase bought... maybe he got his at Wal-mart... I can't remember...

They used to have some decent Eureka canisters with quick release power nozzles, but no more!

They used to have 2 Orecks at Target, now only one.... Even though I'm not crazy about Orecks, the one they have is an attractive model.... I like the shape of the bag and the headlight lens.

I can't believe Target has been around long enough to have had Convertibles and Dialamatics! Wow!

They have like 3 of the same Bissell bagless upright, just in different colors... awful! I liked their selection better when they had the entire Platinum Force lineup, the Dyson Blueprint and two Orecks...

Oh yes.... I sometimes do put the machines back together.... re hook the hoses, replace the attachments, unfold the handles, replaced the bag doors and dirt chamber lids.... I didn't think any of those vacuums were worth it though! I tried to put the bag door on the Eureka Smart vac when I was at wal-mart the last time, but someone had stolen the bag and it won't on on w/o a bag!

Nobody has self propelled vacuums anymore!

cheap junky plastic vacs.!

I wonder if there is a way we could boycott these junky Appliances and get rid of them from the Market alltogether..?

I can definetly see it happening in the near future.
Seriously think about this for a minute guys, why would we want a future of total junk for our Grand kids.....Are We that stupid and Gullible..?

Throw-waway disposable crap has become a disease in our society and a menace to our Planet.

Lets see-with the new "plastique" vac trend-and bagless.Ok-we fill the vacuum, its now dusty and yucky-put it out on the curb.it gets taken to the landfill with the dirt it picked up.Funky way of getting rid of dirt from the house and keeping our landfills well stocked with junky vacuums.Used to be you had a bagged vacuum-or dump bag vac that LASTED-and you just got rid of the dirt or disposable bag or dirt in the trash-NOT the whole vacuum.

Tolivac, I AGREE with U about the landfills "stocking up on plasti-vacs!" What happened to vac mfrs these days now, where people throw out the WHOLE vac instead of just the dirt/bag?

I don't like that Wal-Mart, Target & Home Depot tie down their vacs onto the shelf! How can customers check out the new vacs if they're tied down?!

Actually, I wouldn't touch these plasti-vacs, not even with a 100 ft pole! Instead I'll buy a vintage vac like a GE Swivel Top, Apex, or Convertible.

That Target display is exactly identical to the Vacuum display I saw at my Target in Pittsburgh this morning. The exact same vacs in the same order. Slightly off topic, but has anyone seen the vacuum display at Kohl's. It is the worst display of any store. The vacuums are up so high with huge display signs blocking the view of the base of each machine. Not sure what Kohl's executive thought that was a good way to sell vacuums. Chris

Its to the point I just walk buy the pretty plastivac displays and move on.Or is it that the landfills will be well stocked with the pretty, colorful, dusty plastivac REMAINS?Doubt any of those plastivacs will survive a trip thru the trash trucks compactor. On the "Classic Refuse Trucks" videos on Youtube-they show Leach trash trucks crushing pianos-imagine what that would do to a plastivac? Then the poor unfortunate vac has to withstand the gear-tooth wheels on the landfill dozer-pactor type tractor.-that machine compacts and spreads the waste in the landfill.I also prefer the vintage vacs-esp Hoover,Eureka-what those build now are truely trash truck food.I guess the "Big Box" store now tie down their vac display models-those may not be functional,anyway-and I note the cords are cut.Even if you got the vac in your hands--the cord is often cut,and no outlet to plug into even if the cord is intact.Guess the "static" displays are for liability reasons?-the store can't get sued if someone gets hurt by a "plastivac" falling on them or breaks.

Target

I used to work for a division of Target Corp, and everything in the company is according "to plan,"  From how products are merchandised on the shelves, to which stores carry a full-line or selected lineup.  From the day products are added to their list of offerings there is a plan for how long they will be offered, when they will go on mark down and when they will be withdrawn.  The company is all about their brand image and keeping their offerings "fresh, new and exciting."  The questionable quality of what they sell in terms of vacuum cleaners is a whole different matter!  It's all about trend for their under 40, upper middle class target market.
