I have a Eureka Vactronic 1790A. It runs fine but when I turn it off the motor makes a racket as it slows down. I thought it was a very noisy bearing, but when it's running I don't hear any bearing noise. Is there a fan inside the motor that could be causing this type of noise? And is it possible to access the interior of the motor to check the fan or the bearing? If it's a bearing I could probably find a generic bearing the right size, but I need to know if I can get to it. Does anyone know?

It's pretty easy once you have done it a few times. Just slowly start taking it apart. Lay your screws and pieces in order or video the process. You can do it.
When you have the motor out start at the end opposite of the fan. remove the carbon brushes carefully and there are long screws under them that will release the bearing holder from the armature. Cleaning the fans is a pain. Carefully pry the fan casing apart where its fused together (I believe this is a 2 fan motor so you will have 2 sections to pry) don't pry to much because you want the casings to go back together. When you reassemble you should get some metal tape of something to hold fan case back together. If I've left anything out there are many others here who can chime in

I was looking at the motor today, wanting to take it out. There are two vertical metal straps holding the plastic cover(?) on and I don't see how to remove them. I tried pulling one out from the top and then the bottom slot...the bottom end (floor side) came out from it's slot a little bit but no more. The top end seemed to be hooked into it's slot and although I applied some pressure, I didn't want to break anything so I stopped.

Any suggestions for getting these two metal straps off?

Hmmmmm, it's been years since I've had one of these apart. If I remember right you have to take motor out before the straps. I wish I had a video and or time to make one. There has to be someone on here who has done this recently. I know a few ppl I can ask and I will get back to you. We will get this thing apart ;)

From that parts diagram it looks like the straps I'm referring to are the "filter clips" for the filter holder. I also found a parts diagram from SearsPartsDirect for a similar model and zoomed it I can see the shape of these slips...

Knowing the shape gives me a chance to try to remove them. I don't know if this will have anything to do with removing the motor but removing the filter holder might expose something that will make it more obvious.

BTW, I called the Eureka company and asked about a repair manual. According to the nice lady I spoke with, they didn't even produce repair manuals for current models, they were privately produced. This doesn't make much sense for an old company such as this one, but that's what she said.

I finally got back on the Vactronic and managed to loosen the clips and remove the filter holder. But I haven't seen anything that could be loosened or removed in order to remove the motor. If you look at the photos I've added, there is a nut in the center of the motor, but it's too small to be holding a powerful motor in place. It's probably just holding the fan. And that's where I've stopped.

I'm hoping someone here can look at the photos and suggest how the motor might come off.

You're going about it all wrong. The very first thing you need to do is remove the hood. At the switch pedal is a pin that goes all the way through. Remove the pin by pushing it out from the narrow side. Remove the pedal. You'll find two screws that hold the hood to the main body. Remove them. Above each wheel this is also a screw. Remove them. Now the wheeled base will separate from the grey motor mount. Place the fan side down, lift off the wheeled portion, and remove the four screws circling the underside of the motor. These are the mounting screws. The motor will now slip out, you can unwire it, and then you can work on the motor itself.

How is the progress going on your Eureka?

I'm just seeing the post now. You need a T20 torque driver to remove the screws colored your orange colored base to the metal bag compartment. The metal plate that separates the bag from the motor will end up being removed I believe. Definitely want to remove the bag compartment cover first like Dysonman1 mentioned.
