"Trash Find" Vacuums Thread

Hi all,

I thought it would be interesting to start a this thread, so here goes. Here you can share your vacuum finds, but not any old finds, "trash finds".

Yesterday, me and George (Dysondestijl) found a Dirt Devil cylinder and a Dyson DC05 Absolute + in a skip. Both work well! I'm very pleased.

Here's my trash find

Yesterday I found this diamond in the rough, it's a Sanitaire Deluxe. I'm not exactly sure how old it is. I found this one at the scrap yard.

I've had a Panasonic and a Vax turboforce recently. Both have long boring rebuild threads though and I don't have the pictures on my phone to upload for this thread.

Hmm....

Each year during clean up week a friend and i often make a round or two to look for decent vacuums i've been lucky enough to find some pretty nice vacuums between the last two years i've picked up.

A simplicity 7 series, the metal base plate had gone missing and the cord had been cut it's really a shame they threw it away it's a very good vacuum.
We also found 2 hoover windtunnels one windtunnel lite, and one Windtunell supreme both of them just needed a cord and a clean up.
Hoover dimension 1000 which needed a cord it was also missing the wands and powerhead.

The year before the only thing i can really remember picking up is a Lindhaus Activa. Which needed a cord, baseplate and to have a clog removed from the hose.

Had a think at work, remember some more:
DC04 Absolute. Had been underwater in a skip, grabbed it, dried it off, freed off the rusty motor and vacuumed up some paint

Really old numatic vac, massive it was. Used it for 10 years in the garage

My Numatic NVQ250 came from the Marlow post office, in the skip after a refit

Lux 502 I think from the same skip as the numatic

Saw another 500 something in a skip but the handle had snapped off

Was in a car of friends and saw my orange celebrity lying in a skip. Got them to pull over, knocked on the door but no answer. Grabbed it anyway! Very glad I did

Erm, can't remember anymore now! Must be more, I've had loads!

Found my Hoover Commercial in the flat above a shop I used to work at. Owner used it for storage and said I could have it. Motor blew several Yeard later though so that got skipped

How many of us have rescued a vacuum

that only needed a bag or a belt, or grease? It's a crime how some people waste.... I've been given 'trash' finds from others with local vac shop stickers on them. A shame how they started out....and what has happened to them.

I agree John, it amazes me what people will throw out. I saved a Working 1992 Numatic NV250 from the tip. I cleaned it up, it works and looks like new!

What surprises me is how many trash finds I have cleaned up, unclogged, or new belt and bag, save to give to anyone needing and years later they are still going?? Nice to have spares to give away

People around here throw them away alot they dont know how to install belts on newer machines. I got a brand new looking hoover fold away tape still over the attachments, and 2 rainbow se,s on sepe and a g6 kirby.mostly bissells and dirt devils.people are cheap in oklahoma, HA! HA!

I normally refurb plastivac trash finds and sell them cheaply for a bit of beer money or give them away. Their all going strong too! Plus if they do break it's no big deal as they were free!

Dirt Devil Envision Wide Glide. It agitated the carpets well anand I'm impressed with it. I've had it for about three days. If this picture showed up you're looking at a picture I took after the cleaning I did to it and a couple days worth of gunk in the bin. It has all its tools but it's in need of a motor mount on one side.

Curb finds are awesome


There is the sense of opening a present. You don't know what your getting.

I once found a Sears Lady Kenmore canister vac from 1980, in a construction dumpster (skip). The vac was fine. Power head needed work. Wish I still had it.

Years ago, we had "big junk" garbage week, a few times a year. One could put anything at the curb. I used to get dishwashers, vacuums, washers, and a few other things. It was so fun.

These days, you see these cheap plastic vacs at the likes of Goodwill and St. Vincent DePaul, usually for $4 to $10.
I can't help but wonder how many simply need the filters cleaned, possibly a belt, a clog removed from the hose, and good wipe down.

When I worked for a catholic charity, in the warehouse, people were always dropping donations off (in fact there was more stuff coming in the back door than was going out the front). Several times I bought for mere pennies with employee discount, vacs that needed to simply be cleaned.

It's like people buy these, take them out of the box, use them until the filter is so plugged or the bag is full, then go buy a new one.

Is that a sign of progress for a society, or is it a failure?

My most recent find (now a couple months ago) was a Dyson DC25 Animal. Nearly made a U turn at 55 when I saw it but common sense got the best of me and I turned around in a driveway just up the road. It wasn't even terribly dirty, attachments were present and looked as if they'd barely been used, really nice condition overall. Cord was neatly wrapped and in good condition. Ran fine on first test, only thing I found wrong was a nasty clog in the handle. Cleaned that out and it works fine. No bad odors, brushroll is good.

Kirby Gsix

My greatest trash find of all time--and the one that brought me to Vacuumland--is a Kirby Gsix. I still have it and enjoy using it. Besides some crud (mostly a Carpet Fresh type product and a little pet hair) in the nozzle, the only thing it needed was a bag (and a belt shortly thereafter). The bag I took out must have weighed five pounds but the machine would still pick up dirt! It made me an instant Kirby fan.

Windsor XP12, next to a dumpster. Missing a bunch of screws on the bottom (heading to the hardware store tomorrow), and it was filthier than I could've imagined inside, but everything works. Popped in a new bag, brushroll, and filter, and it runs like a champ.

Trash finds

Neat thread to revive!

None recently, but the two vacuums that I own that were trash/curb finds are:

Electrolux Epic 6500, 75th Anniversary
Just the canister, hose, wands, bare floor tool and crevice tool.
Blown motor.

Electrolux Ambassador III in dark grey
Canister, hose, sheath/wand, and power nozzle.
Nozzle clogged with crud, but cleaned up beautifully.
Just used it throughout the first floor the other day!

Lately, I see modern uprights semi regularly.
But I know nothing about them; so I just leave them for someone who does.

I found a maroon Hoover Legacy in the trash once, the only issue was the bag compartment was loose because the clips broke, so I just taped it on. I could have used screws instead and you wouldn't have known. It just needed a new headlight bulb and the attachments looked brand new. I used it for a while and we put it in a yard sale.

Another time I found an orange plastic base Convertible, I wished I'd kept it but I was afraid to plug it in.

I once found an early 80s Kenmore canister and blue Hoover Celebrity at the same time but all it was were the canisters themselves no hoses or anything. I took them apart for fun.

Another neighbor used to ride his bike and pick up stuff from the trash. He left a red Kenmore upright on my front porch once. It worked but the bottom had melted somehow as if the belt overheated and the brush didn't turn. I would push it around and use the attachments on it when I was a kid. Then my parents threw it away but someone took it. He also brought me a late 80s Kenmore canister once but it just had the hose. I used to use it in the garage but my dad made me throw it away because the bearings went bad.

Other than that not much else. Awhile back I did see an older Electrolux tank in the trash but I didn't get it because I have NO room whatsoever for it. Then about two weeks ago I saw a bagless Bissell Powerforce.

Mostly these days if I DO see a vacuum, it's a bagless upright of some kind. For awhile though it seemed like Self Propelled bagged Hoover Windtunnels were the common sight along the road, every time I would see vac it was one of them.
