When I was really young I once got a toy Dirt Devil Deluxe upright vacuum for a Christmas gift. It looked much like the real thing. Unfortunately about a day after I got it, I sucked up a piece of cereal with the hose on it and broke it. It sounded like the fan broke and it wouldn't run anymore. I felt so bad about it. We tried to exchange it, but all of the stores were sold out of them, and if not they said they only had pink ones. I didn't want a pink one so we just took it back to the store.

I also had the Dirt Devil toy hand vac as well and it never broke. It too, was alot like the real thing, and had a brushroll that was powered by a rubber band if I remember correctly. It actually would pick up hair and dust.

I still have a pencil sharpener that looks kind of like a Hoover Futura canister with a PN.

Dirt Devil JR

I used to have one of those handvac ones too i loved that thing when i was younger i would try to use it in place of our dirt devil 103
to this day i still have no idea what happened to it, i know the cloth bag went missing after that the rest of it went missing.

It is a shame that the usuable toy vacs are hard to come across these days. my niece had one of those two in one units (the dustbuster on the upright) just a generic unit in the upright mode it wouldn't pick up anything used as the handheld it also didn't pick up. I also got her a toy miele, which was supposed to be able to pick up but this one had such a thin hose and wands that it couldn't pick up anything.

I had a Mattel Tuff Stuff

I had a Mattel Tuff Stuff Vacuum...My Godmother bought it for me in the late 70's think I was 4 or 5 for a birthday present....I don't have the one I had as a child but had purchased one off E-Bay for sentimental value a few years ago... I used to build toy vacuums from cardboard and other materials around the house/garage...my parents were amazed...LOL Here is the picture of what I have...

Dirt Devil Jr. Handvac

I know they are toys, but those little vacs are really neat! I have one still, in fact it's sitting on my desk as a decoration! I'm impressed at how that little thing runs as good as it does and inflates the bag, turns the brushroll, etc! Great little toy and a BIG conversation starter in my office!

Mattel Tuff Stuff Vacuum

Brian, thanks for sharing the photo of your Tuff Stuff vacuum box. I forgot all about those! I had one of those as well in the very early 80's as a small child.I think I used mine until it fell apart. My mom still has another push toy I used as a "vacuum" when very small. It is one of those toys that has balls in it that bounce around as it's pushed about.

Toy vacuums

that I have are a Hoover windtunnell, and my favorite of all I got when I was small is just like a Hoover Model 63. That is my favorite. Mom bought it for me one christmas in the 50's thinking I would like the vacuum and not be so scared of them.

There are toy Miele canisters on the market at present. The current crop offers one in red; the previous crop was yellow. I found an incomplete toy in my travels not long ago.

You can get one of these new in the box for about $35. The motor runs but the example I have, complete with a little cloth bag in the dust compartment doesn't draw vacuum.

Dust compartment. There is a little compartment on the top of the lid that holds three tiny attachments, just like a real Miele.

The toy Miele has a variable speed motor, and even battery operated the rheostat is functional. The power switch does what it's supposed to, but the cord retractor button is just for show. Being DC, no cord.

Toy mieles

I had heard there was a working version of those toy mieles so i picked one up for my niece at a vac shop a few years back, must have gotten the wrong version as the airflow/suction was non existent on that thing. it was red with a very narrow hose

My sister and I both had a Casdon "Hoover Senior", model 652-style in pale green.

A year later, she had the Casdon "Hoover Junior Dirtsearcher" in blue.

Both types had battery operated "Dirtfinder" lamps, which activated by pulling the handle from the upright position, to the 45° operating position. Suction was generated by friction drive gearing from the rear wheels to the "dirty fan". The brushroll was a miniature carpet sweeper brush (looked like a narrow bottle brush actually), which was friction driven from the front wheels.

The PVC bag inflated and the machine actually picked up dust.

I have a Brown/beige Hoover Junior (not the dirtsearcher) and a Blue Hoover Senior with the Dirtsearcher lamp - both made by Wells & Co, although I remember my parents buying two of them under the Casdon label when I was little - clearly I must have shown signs as a toddler that I loved vacuums lol. They seldom work now as the motor has that "burning out" sound lol but at least they're almost perfect replicas.

Toy Mieles...

I bought one of those yellow Miele toys for my daughter last Christmas. She absolutely LOVES it and I have to say, for a toy it's pretty neat! Of course the suction is almost non-existant, but nevertheless it's an interesting toy.

On another note, I don't think they make these anymore, but being a computer geek, this one just struck my fancy. I would LOVE to put one on my desk at work, but alas I can't find them on eBay or any of the other USB gadget stores.

Here is a list of all my toy vacuums:

Dyson DC01 DeStijl
Dyson DC02
Dyson DC07
2x Dyson DC08
Toy Henry
Toy Hetty
Dyson DC14
Electrolux 550
Electrolux Contour
A big Smoby thing I had when I was about 2/3, can't remeber what happened to it
Toy Moulinex Cylinder
When I was 4 I also had the Vacuum that came off the cleaning trolleys, I had 2 different ones

I used to have a Bosch toy hoover!

It was silver, and had a long pipe like the Dyson's and a stair tool thing on the end. Half the pipe has broken and the other bits, don't know where on earth they are. I'll hunt for it now and get a piccy.

Toy Vacuums

The only toy vacuum that I have is one that looks just like a Hoover Model 63. My mom gave it to me one year for christmas when I was little hoping it would not make me so scared of the vacuum. Dan

I had a green lux contour toy vac as a child, don't remember much about it really.

Saw a grey contour toy vac at the car boot last weekend, and almost bought it for my daughter, but it was faded and missing tools so I left it.

One day...
