Not a bad $10 day at St. Vinnies and the Restore
Firstly a very nice condition Royal Prince and I got an extra bag for it that looks to be unused. I didn't even notice till I got it home that it's the 75th Anniversary model cause it sez so on the side. That should put the value up into the thousands

And this 1958 Canadian Electrolux Z88. I needed the attachments more than the vac for my other one which is in much better condition. This one has a replacement hose but in good condition and a replacement cord, both should be red.
Still in all it runs very well and is ever soooo quiet.

ohhhhhhhhh, the Z88 is a real honey! Whisper-quiet as you say but very powerful. One of them won best straight-suction canister cleaner one year at a VCCC convention "suck-off."

Royal is nice too, those are such durable hand vacs. Too bad they're now made of hideous red plastic. I believe the "spare" bag is correct for this model; the one on it is, I think, rather older. This machine is great for cleaning out your car.

In all of my collecting of Royal handvacs I have yet to get that one. I can tell you that the bag that is on it is original. The red handle is what makes it interesting and what makes me think that the bag is correct. I belive that it is a canadian version. You have a US replacement bag.

I have never seen the red handle version with a 75th anniversary sticker though. My 75th anniversary, along with every other one I have seen are always all blue. The metal nozzle plug is also different.

Is that replacement bag dark blue? I've been looking for the dark blue hand vac for years. What ever you do don't wash it! It won't be blue for very long.

It is the Canadian version. I also have another one boxed away somewhere with the red handle and dark blue bag. I think everyone I've ever seen has had a red handle

Holy leapin' cows, Pete...

Two stunning vacs! That's a Version One 88, 1957-63 - judgeing by the Electrolux lettering below the midline. Version 2, 1963-67 has the lettering above on the rear haunches and adds a white rubber bumper all around. I thimk...

I must get over to Sarnia/Port Huron so's you can take us thrifting. Are these places open Sundays or Mondays? Oh well, only 5 more weeks and I'm on vacationtime.

I have a free extra canadian Lux Red woven hose in great cosmetic shape for display if ya don't mind it leaks somewhat.

The red Lux88 is top of my want list for the 80 series to fill that lonely gap between the 86 & 89. I've gradually acquired all the red tools & telescopic wand and a red hose that surprisingly doesn't leak...waiting for the lucky day my eyes spy a lonesome red 88. And I'm sure there must be a matching red PN1 out there, too.

Congrats on your finds.

Dave

My late 60's lux 89

Here is a pic of my canadian eluxomatic 89. I believe this is a late 60's model. I have an aftermarket hose on it. I did manifest then matching power head and wands for the vac bought the vac from my local vac shop, for 50 bucks. It has very strong suction and is very quiet!! I am looking for the matching green attatchments, (floor brush, crevice tool, brush and upholstery tool). The powerhead is also very qiuet and works like a hot damn. I will be sure to bring this vac to the 2008 convention. This is one of my favourite luxes. My aunt had this exact model and as a chid when I would visit her house I would get soooo excited when she would pull out the lux 89 and say that it is time to clean.. Wow, what great memories .
Is there anyone eles in vacuumland who has memories about a lux 89?? If so,, please do share.

Cheers,
Brad.

I have an 89 as well with the original non power hose and a few attachments, no power nozzle though.

Dave I'll keep this 88 with your name on it as I only wanted the attachments. I don't think the 88 was ever available with a power nozzle. This one has no power port on the machine itself.

Alan, Canadian Luxs have always differed from the American models. Without knowing any of the details, its obvious the Z30 & Z50 series shapes derive from the European models. The 80 series debuted in 1957 with the wrapper cavity turned horzontal, as the shape suggests. Uses the exact same self-sealing bag. We never got an ejection system like the LX but inside the door are the same pneumatic components & adjustment dial to stop the motor & pop the door.

Biggest difference is the hose connector mechanism and the connector diameter. An American hose is too large to fit Canadian , while a Canadian hose will fit American loosely. American uses two press latches while Canadian uses a sprung slipring with 6 ball bearing engaging inside a groove. Meaning both hoses are free to rotate in their couplings.
Our AP series was the first Plastic Canadian Lux equivalent to the US 1205 and even then we got different body styling on the same chassis...Sorta like we got Buicks and you got Oldsmobiles. :-)

Oh, how well I remember Mom's Red Lux. She would tow me up & down the long central wood hallway and over the livingroom carpets. Just like we would sing all her favorite songs from the 40's & 50's while doing the dishes we would sing 'at the top of our lungs' while vacuuming. She was a modern gal with 2 young scamps and a 3rd on the way, just moved to the suburbs and Red was her favorite color. Red headed Aunt Carol got a blue Constellation and that just kept me enthralled. In 1967 (Canada's Centennial year) when I was 14 Mom traded up to a green Z89 but my vac riding days were behind me by then. I don't recall she got the Power Nozzle. 'Round about 1980 Dad was using it as his workshop basement vac (Mom had gone back to a Filter Queen) with replacement white hose when he got a spankin' new Shop-Vac, and that's when I rescued it in the nick of time from the garage trash heap on a chance weekend visit. The matching pigtail power hose was long gone & replaced with a non power generic but the collapsing power wand is intact. I found the PN1 in a Salvation Army store a few years back. The rubber motor mount ring had torn away so I replaced that and it sucks strong & quiet like new. Now on the alert to her son's additional peculiarities, Mom gave me the Filter Queen in the 90s when she went to Sears and got an easier to tow around Kenmore canister. Now that she's a feisty widow in a huge 3 bedroom apartment she's got a central vac setup.

Just this past week I got the green non-electric hose with trigger switch nozzle and the green clip on power cord gifted from Doug Smith in Saskatoon...cause I won the ZB55 and tweed ZB57 he had up on eBay. And that's why I have an extra excellent red woven hose for your 88, Pete.

I'll keep my eyes open for green tools for you and hopefully in November I'll drop off the hose to you on my way back from Butler PA and North Canton...

The dusting brush is generic

Every summer while we kids & Mom stayed at the Port Stanley cottage Dad would embark on a total reconstruction makeover of some room in the house and he always had some stunt dreamed up to prepare Mom for her surprise in advance. One year on the way home Dad handed Mom a wrapped package with the Shag Rug attachment in it and she was mighty perplexed til we got home. The basement recroom was wall to wall cream shag. I hated that carpet...always loosing important Girder & Panel pieces in it. Not to mention all the screws & bolts & stuff from the Mecanno set or what appliance I'd be taking apart. I'd fire up the Lionel electromagnet and run it through the pile to reclaim metal bits. Ahh, good times, eh?

I find the combination of 60s and 70s styles (tool and body for instance) very interesting, aeolean..you can really tell it's a stepping stone between eras :)

The last of the red Z88 did have a power nozzle - you lift up a little tab in the front part of the handle to connect the power cord from the hose - it had the same wrap-around cord as the early American G and L.

There was a beautiful 88 on eBay a few years back - mint and I mean MINT condition, power nozzle, original hose, and a fabulous high-styled two-tone black and white leatherette ottoman to store it in. Don't know who the lucky winner was, but it warn't MEEEE. I recall that interestingly enough it was located in the US and not Canada.

DAve you have me confused.. aren't you looking for a red z88? You can have this one I just found if you want since you have a hose for it. This latest one, nor my other red one have the little handle tab for plugging in a p/n.. My green 89 does though

Right Pete, re-reading my posts I confused myself. Just got all over exhuberant recalling the Lux & Mom stories. Now with 3 red Canadian hoses hanging on the door waiting for red vacs to miraculously manifest the one I got this week is airtight, which added to the enthusiasm.

1. You have a red hose already for your other red one. This latest 88 gives you the tool set for the first one. I misunderstood.
2. Yes, I'd luv to have the red Z88 version one with NO power takeoff 'cause now I have an airtight hose for it and enough extra red tools to compliment it. Please put my name on it and I'll see you as soon as reasonable. I have this Sunday and Monday off but watching the weather carefully as Sunday may be a perfect last boat day before it gets wrapped for winter storage.
3. As Charles pointed out its the later version 2 red 88 that has the power takeoff as well as a white rubber bump strip all around...and that's yet another one all we Canadians should be on the lookout for. LOL
4. Your picture of the thrift store 1958 88 appears to have the back housing for the cordwinder, yes?
