'Tis the season to buy Dysons...

Ugh!

Congrats!

As much as I wanted the longer hose and the electric motorhead, I absolutely didn't like the wand setup. Not very easy to use with attachments.

Does yours have the DDM?

Hi Fred - I totally understand; if I didn't have other cleaners to dust with (ie, if I was relying on this as my only cleaner), I'm sure it would bother me more. My friend Eric described it as 'dusting a lampshade with a baseball bat!'

Aside from that, I have no complaints, aside from the weight; this thing is a BEAST! I've only tried it at my house so far - as soon as I get the chance, I'll be taking it to my relatives homes to try it out on other flooring! But I'm very impressed with the performance - it leaves beautiful track-lines in the carpet, and the canister has plenty of fine dust, fluff and pet hair, and grit in, so it's definitely doing it's job!

Sadly, ours doesn't have the DDM, either - as far as I can tell, the only difference between the UK and US versions of this model are that the UK one has a silver cyclone manifold, rather than gold, and that ours is very slightly more powerful (251 airwatts vs. 220). Did you try one out at all, when you were deciding which one to change the DC25 for?

Stephen - no, not especially cheaper, although I managed to find mine for £50 less than Dyson sell it for. The title was a joke, since both Fred and Patrick have also bought or received Dysons this Christmas.

???

Why 'convert'?

Vacuum cleaners aren't a religion, and it's possible to appreciate the benefits and disadvantages of different types and brands of machine! I haven't 'replaced' my Hoovers with my Dysons, and - though I can't speak for him, I think it's pretty safe to say! - neither has Fred!

I'm sure that neither you nor Fred would fully convert to Dysons Jack..and there's no harm in having all sorts of different makes and models.

I don't restrict myself to Hoover, it's just one of my favourite brands, at least as far as the old stuff is concerned...and if you check my profile I put down Dyson as my favourite modern brand..so perhaps, that has something to do with it, the fact that Dyson's new products are so innovative and effective that so many members want to try out the latest developments.

I'm certainly not seriously suggesting that you or Fred would do away with your Hoovers!

Size-comparison

Jack when viewed seperately the size of the heads dont look much different, but side by side the motor-head looks alot bigger. How does the turbine brush compare to the electric?

Congrats Jack :)

Hope you are as happy with it as I am with my DC21 :)

I find the motorhead seems to pick up more than any of the turbines as the motorised brushbar is almost impossible to slow down with your bare hand. Also because there is no clean air turbine, There is more suction directed down into the carpet.

Kenny - the size difference is so striking because the Motorhead is bigger than a standard Dyson head, and the Turbinehead is smaller than standard!

Before seeing the Motorhead in person, I'd assumed that it was basically a slightly reworked DC18 head. In fact, it's about 2-3 inches bigger than a Dyson upright head! I guess they realised the Motorhead's biggest appeal would be the US market, where houses - and thus, expanses of carpet - are generally bigger, and benefit from a slightly wider head. It's quite heavy, but very nimble and agile because it uses a pivoting roller design, much like the DC18. It glides around obstacles, chair-legs etc with a flick of the wrist!

As Shanon says, the Motorhead is much more effective than the Turbinehead, because the 100w motor means the brush-bar bristles can afford to be a lot stiffer, and really groom down into the carpet pile! The Turbinehead's better than a straight-suction nozzle for pet-hair, but whereas the Motorhead is an adequate replacement for an upright vac, I don't think the Turbinehead is really suited to fully-carpeted homes.

Shanon - I LOVE THIS CLEANER!! I don't regret the purchase at all, although it wasn't cheap. I was wondering whether I'd made a wise decision, investing so much money into a canister, when I'm a 95% upright user - but I find it great for use on carpets. Not entirely happy with the wand design when it comes to dusting, but I have my DC31 for that, anyway! I was really excited to get this, and it's totally surpassed my expectations!
