Thrift Store Vacuums

Hello. I'm curious to see what other people have found at thrift stores. I don't find much but I have had some good finds (My best was the 2001 featherlite.) Photos are not mine. Also, I've found a photo of a walmart vacuum section I'm guessing is from around 2004.

I agree. Desirable vacuum cleaners are few and far between at the thrifts around here. That said, 2016 wasn't too bad. I saw four and bought three. I first found a Filter Queen Majestic for $5 and subsequently spent 10 times that much fixing it up–definitely the worst buy of the year. Then I followed that up a couple of months later with a nice Electrolux Discovery Plus, which was in great shape but missing all of its tools for $24. I then got a hose for $10 and a mini crevice tool for $4 to go along with the wands and combo upholstery/dusting brush that I already had. The final find of the year was an Electrolux Diamond Jubilee in excellent condition with a nearly new replacement hose, original wand and PN5 in pristine condition that I snagged this fall for the princely sum of $10. It didn't need a thing besides a light cleaning. We'll see what 2017 brings.

I got a nice Concept One, Model U3103 last week for 10 bux @ SA. Kinda dirty but runs smooth & decent brush roll.

I've found some good vacuums and good deals at thrift stores in 2016. I found a very dirty Electrolux Epic 3500SR for $5 that just needed a good cleaning and a new brushroll and belt. I also found a near perfect Oreck platinum pilot for $20. It even included 6 new dust bags! It's a very good vacuum and the ability to steer it around the room is great. It also has two speeds.

Haven't got a photo, but my best find ever was a Riccar 8900 for $30. Seems like the Salvation Army people had no idea what they had.

Acevac, the ConceptOne is a cool looking machine. I've never seen one in person, but I like the look of it.

It seems oftentimes, people just don't want to bother trying to fix an item; they would rather just throw/give it away if it stops working or it looks "too old." It's true.. some probably do not know what they have and that they usually cannot buy a comparable vacuum cleaner in a majority of retail stores.

Not knowing what they have.....

It's true, about a lot of stuff. I got Lenox crystal glasses...dirt cheap. They could NOT have known what they really were.
As far as vacuums,they see "old" and send it along. They see "dirty" and do the same.Their lack of sense is our gain. Sometimes, all they need is a good cleaning, belt, bag, etc. Sometimes, we'll buy a bad machine to get a decent, maybe perfect bag.
Some folks 'poo poo' the idea of thrift stores, only buying new, etc.
But, how many of us have gotten wonderful, hard, almost impossible to find items. Trust me: IF the 'right machine came their way', I doubt they'd 'pass it up'. Or, maybe they would. Again, their pass up is our gain. WE all have cleaners we'd love to have, Hoover, and ALL of the OTHER species. I've even bought machine, non Hoover, for other people, because I KNEW they were important to THEM. I was given carte blanche at Vac Way in Scranton. I had a certain amount of time to 'get anything you can'. And, I was careful what I took. Who is the fool who'd pass them up?

Gottahaveahoove: I hear you about the crystal. One of my all time favorite thrift shop scores was four or five years ago when I picked up a Wedgwood jasperware plate for--are you ready for this--10 cents! It was marked 20 cents but it was half-price day. I also walked out that day with a complete set of Kirby tools for all of $4.00 to match the Gsix I'd rescued from the dumpster a few months earlier. I like to believe I reunited those tools with their original machine.

Thrift finds

Rarely do I find a good vacuum at a thrift store here locally.  But, like John I did find a set of Lenox Solitaire Platinum rimmed wine glasses for 50 cents each about a year ago.

I haven't seen any really good deals lately other than an Electrolux Renaissance at Goodwill for $30 and a Dyson for $20.

I have had some good finds at Habitat, I found my Kenmore Let's Clean there like new for $5 and my Eureka 1934A and an early Bissell Plus.

I have also seen a nice Hoover PowerMax and a Hoover Convertible Elite at another thrift store.

I generally don't buy vacuums at thrift stores anymore unless it was one that I really was looking for, just don't have the space.

Model G

I found an Electrolux Model G at a thrift shop for 9.50. It had two floor and carpet nozzles and an electrified hose, but the wheel is broken, it has a small dent, the cord winder does not work and it looks kinda nasty. I might post some pics.

It's Duct Tape. I'm too broke to buy a new hose, and too lazy to reseal it. lol

That's fantastic on the Diamond J.......that was my first new Electrolux and my present model DD.

I don't really go to thrift stores anymore because I really don't find something interesting anymore and I have been more busier than usual. A while ago I found a Tristar MG2 for about $10 and all it needs is just a clean up.
