Hans can tell more about it, but I believe it's because the Sunbeam has a huge fan -- it's as big as the diameter of the motor housing.

I just gave it a quick wipe-down, cleaned the filter and plugged it in. It does work. It's not as loud as I thought it would be, but definitely not super quiet like a Lewyt. I think it will clean up nicely, but I'm going to take it all apart and do it right. Just add it to the always growing list of projects!

Morgan-- I recall when you got yours, I went hunting for that thread, and found it. Such a gorgeous machine!

Sunbeam!

The Sunbeam Dual Deluxe was introduced in 1958,It has a strange motor, like an Apex Strato Cleaner..it has one rather large fan,the fan looks similar to a flying saucer, thick in the center and thin around the edge, the exceptional airflow and suction is partly because of this, but also because of a 12 amp motor,it truly will dim the lights, when it came out there were reports of problems with older houses not having adequate wiring,it as well as the Apex, are comparable to new Mieles in both airflow and suction, it is truly amazing.

Always jealous

I'm always amazed at what you find, Fred. Every time I go searching on the weekends in Denver all I find are 5 year old plastic Hoovers and Eurekas. It's very rare to find any vacuum older than 10 years old it seems.

I'm jealous of that Lewyt! It's beautiful. But the Sunbeam brings back such great memories...that was the first canister we had growing up. I remember the sound it made turning it off. Funny how I seem to remember it had terrible suction...only now would I probably realize that mom didn't change the bag much!
