Thinning The Herd Again at Tarantula Arms - Hoover Dial A Matic Model 1100

This is the original and first model of the Dial A Matic. The machine is in good cosmetic condition. The only replacement parts are the cord and cord restraint. This is the machine with the brush roll that rotates in reverse.

That Hoover DAM looks just like the one my Mom had-she had it for many years-beleive it was traded for a Panasonic.

I'm curious as to what exactly you mean by the words "rotates in reverse"? I have a Hoover model 1100, and just checked mine. The brush roller rotates in the same direction as all Hoovers. Does your Dial A Matic rotate the brush from back to front? Mine rotates from forward to back like a Hoover Convertible.

I think what he means

is that the agitator moves dirt away from the side-suction hose, as opposed to towards it, like most modern clean-air machines. A comical mistake on a first effort, but still a revolutionary machine! I had one of these, and used it a ton until the motor seized.

I got this machine from Jeff Parker (who knows his Hoovers!) who identified and explained the anomoly with this first effort by Hoover at a clean air machine that actually worked with hose and tools. In my old age, I don't remember or explain too well. I'll change the listing to clarify. If I am not mistaken, this was one of the Hoovers that Samatha used in "Bewitched." Here is a link to the discussion about the 1100. Looks like it was the one in "Bewitched."

Samantha's DAM was a model 1100, as was major Nelson's from "I Dream of Jeannie"

The 1100 did not have the full bag indicator or an easily removable nozzle hose. The ductwork inside the bag door was also smaller, so the poor things suffered from frequent clogs.
The owners manuals instructed users to set the carpet suction between medium and low.
One of the most interesting facts of the early DAM is the backwards spiral of the brush roll, away from the suction. I would like to know what they were thinking(or if they even thought of it at all) but the brush rolls on the early DAMs actually worked the dirt away from the suction stream.
The spiral was reversed in 1969 with the intro of the power drive machines, which dramatically improved the cleaner's performance.
The fun is to see this backwards brush in action. Take an earlier DAM(1100/1110/1118/1120) and try and sweep up unpopped popcorn kernals with it.
Then use a reverse machine(such as a powerdrive) and see how fast the popcorn disappears.

So I hope this doesn't discourage anyone from getting this machine. Truly a collectible.
