VacuumLand – Vintage & Modern Vacuum Enthusiasts

Help Support VacuumLand:

Thank you Fred and Robert....and thank you to Robert in Derbyshire for articulating so well our appreciation for Roger and his hard work.

I'll sleep a little better tonight with the positive respectful energy I read now here at Vacuumland....:-)

We can criticize and analyze and say nasty things about inanimate machines all we want, but let this messageboard be a place of respect and dignity for all people coming here. Accusing someone of being vain is not nice, period.

Peace and love and "hoovering hugs" to all....

Something has happened

I've spent twelve hours at work today taking care of patient while I'm trying to recover from a broken femur myself. The pain I'm in is beyond anything I've ever endured in my life. I'm taking some time to post additionally to this thread because something is amiss. I replied, briefly and earlier, to a post that characterized Roger as "vain." Those posts have disappeared, and my reply to those now sits a bit nonsensically, since its predicator is gone. Anyway, this thread was not intended to start a controversy. Ibaisaic is a person I don't know, haven't met in person, but appreciate and respect without having made his personal acquaintance, which I hope to make someday. I stand by my original post, which was written innocently, and also by my later reply to the effect that Roger's expertise does not make him vain or condescending. He speaks with a knowledgable voice. Any deference he receives is well deserved, including my own. I do not moderate this forum and have zero authority over other contributors. However, having said that, I started this thread to compliment someone, not to criticize him. Anyone's perception that he is anything other than a competent vacuum evaluator who puts forth incomparable effort for no profit is undermining the purpose of my writing.

To be blunt, this is why so many vacuum fora have failed in the past. Non-stop criticizing, any excuse to belittle someone, even if that person has gone to tremendous lengths to benefit the community. I'm frustrated. The moderators have my invitation to close this thread, as my compliments have been paid, and I don't want more discord with my name attached to it. I'm now embarrassed before Roger, which is not what I intended when I wrote the original post, and I now have to apologize to Roger, somehow, for the unruliness that has happened here.

Sleepdoc, please don't feel guilty or awkward for starting this thread. It was quite clearly done with the best of intentions, something those who commented negatively knew full well, but decided to ignore simply because they had an axe to grind. That does not reflect badly on you.

I don't know Roger personally but am a big fan of his videos. They're well shot and edited, informative, and sometimes completely off the wall (in a good way). Let's face it, vacuum collecting IS considered to be an unusual hobby by most, but evidently he knows that and embraces it fully. I've never detected any undertones of bragging or self-aggrandisement, just someone who enjoys what they do and wants to share that with others. It's all done in good spirit, and does not warrant any negativity.

Fistly thank you to eveyone who has defended me against whoever made the nasty comments in this thread and as I told Patrick earlier in a private email, he has nothing to be apologetic for.

The only comment I saw was from Alex with the VAIN comment, so whatever else was said, it was Alex that started whatever unpleasantness occurred in the threads above and even if I don't get to find out who else joined in, the blame for me will always lay at Alex's door.

Alex used to be a Facebook friend of mine until recently when he overstepped the mark with comments regarding my beliefs on trying to live a cruelty free life and becomming a vegan. It is not the first time he has upset me on this matter, but I let it lie on more than one occassion accepting that we all have different views and beliefs. After the last heated debate on the matter, I again decided to let it drop and not fan the flames any longer, but when Alex posted a link on the Facebook thread entitled:
"4 Reasons Why Becoming A Vegetarian Is A Fu**ing Stupid Idea" it was the last straw and I blocked him on Facebook. I belive that had I not blocked Alex, this thread would not have escalated into the nasty name calling post it became resulting in a member being banned.

I would like to have the opportunity to defend myself against any specific comments, but as I didn't see them I can only use my imagination about what was said. I get it that some people don't get me or don't like my videos, but to be quite frank, I haven't spent hundreds of hours making and editing videos to let that put me off producing more for the people that do appreciate them. There are hundreds of vacuum videos on Youtube from collectors and enthusiasts who like to share their latest acquisitions and ibaisaic is just one of them. OK, the production values on some of the videos are a bit amateurish, but it doesn't make them any less interesting or valuable to the collecting community. I have the time and the equipment to make my videos as professional looking as I can, but many Youtubers only have a camera phone to film with so of course the finish result will not look quite as good. They are still making an effort to share their interest and should be applauded for doing so. I am flattered when fellow Youtubers ask for my advice on making their videos and I am pleased to give them some tips on how to make their finished video look a bit more polished, but I give them credit for having a go.

If I have unintentionally offended anyone with a comment made in a video or a forum then I apologise unreservedly. I do not enjoy conflict of any kind and avoid confrontations for want of a peaceful life, but I know that nobody can be universally liked and I accept that. I would have been very upset over any personal attacks against me in the past, but the people with negative comments do not know me and never will. The only people in my life whose opinions matter to me are the people who I love and who love me. Saying that, the supportive comments I get on my channel and on this thread do lift my spirits and make me want to keep making videos which I know many people look forward to watching.

Roger

Wow, well, this thread went places it shouldn't.

Roger, IMO, I think your videos are great! You've reached both an audience of collectors and general consumers which isn't an easy thing to do. And whether one is a fan of the content of your videos or not, everyone should appreciate the time and effort that you put into them.

You're never going to please everyone, but your fans far outnumber the negativitity.

Bravo and keep it up :).

Roger

I don't hate you I never will hate you, I don't even dislike you, what I was saying I didn't like was the image you were potraying of late on your youtube videos which I said I thought was a bit big headed. I had felt lile that long before we had any personal issues on Facebook.
I don't have a problem with you.

I just want ypu to kbow that in anything I said here last night I was never rude or directly blunt.

Im sorry if I have to re-open this hornets nest again. Im not sorry that I didn't stay around online to witness whatever occurred in this post regarding the abuse and necessity to block one UK member. But I am sorry for the member who was falsely accused here.

It was Roger who inspired me to do video product reviews. I much prefer worded reviews though; I feel far more comfortable doing that. Roger is far from Vain.

However, now that Roger has had a chance to offer his side of what should be a personal business between him and another UK member on this site clearly outlines how things can escalate when the more basic, primary connection is that of sharing the love of vacuums.

Yes things can get out of hand; a social site outside of this network forum should have little to do with one another. But when adding a single word that was obviously designed to antagonise, it went in the way it was supposed to be directed as per its meaning.

Vain doesn't just mean big headed. It means something that doesn't offer any worth.

Clearly that is totally out of the question when watching any of Roger's videos. His videos are clear cut and cleanly explained, quite literally.

The next time a post pops up on this site, think carefully of words you might want to offer up, Alex. Check out their meaning beforehand before offering it up, though!

Calm down!

For once can we have a thread without nastiness and bitching? Roger's work is entertaining and educational! To be honest I don't get why we can't just discuss vacuums and NOT bring in our personal lives, that's when people overstep the mark! Roger's vegan? Great for him! I'm autistic? Great for me. Let's leave our differences aside and enjoy talking about a simple household appliance. Believe me, not many people in "real life" are willing to...

Thank you Roger

I would like to thank Roger for the hard work and dedication it takes to make his videos. I know many people here across the pond who really enjoy them, and have only positive things to say myself included.
Please continue doing your reviews, eat whatever you would like, and know you are appreciated.
Thank you

I just want ypu to kbow that in anything I said here last night I was never rude or directly blunt. <<<---- What absolute nonsense!

ALEX, you had absolutely no right to say what you said about someone being vain on Vacuumland, it was rude and unnecessary and clearly untrue. Why is this rocket science to you when it's so clearly obvious to the rest of us? I told you to quit while you were ahead and you chose not to, you are now on a 30 day suspension.

As the individual who started this thread

...I simply don't understand how anyone could infer something negative about Roger's character or manners from his videos. These videos are the best reviews I've ever seen. His finished products are 40-50 minutes. I've never done anything like this, but I assume that a finished, edited 45-minute video involves at least a few hours of work in arranging, filming, editing, and uploading. Additionally, he has to buy all these vacuums to test. Mieles, Dysons, and Sebos are expensive. Further still, he does research on other models, so when he reviews a machine, he also knows details about other models in a company's lineup in order to describe a variation of the model he is reviewing that could be a better fit for someone with particular needs. I truly have zero criticism of Roger and his work, although part of me wishes I hadn't started this thread.

Thanks again to all of you who have supported me in this thread. I will continue to produce new content for my channel that I hope you find it interesting and entertaining.

Please stop beating yourself up Patrick. Nobody reading this thread will feel that there is any blame at your door from some ill conceived comments made by a couple of people. I was flattered by your praise and the possitive comments from the other members who contributed, so let's just draw a line under the whole matter and carry on sharing our knowledge and enthusiasm for vacuum cleaners.

In a way it's a good thing that has happened because now Fred and Robert have made it clear that they won't tollerate any nasty comments directed at other members of Vacuumland, so going forward this site will hopefully have a much nicer atmosphere. Look, we are in a minority here, many of us are in two minority groups, so if we can't all get along on a forum where we have a common bond, what hope is there?

Anyway, thime to go. My bag of filth won't spread itself.😜
