The Ultimate Fantom VS. Dyson Challange!

Good Morning VacuumLanders! Does anyone here remember the video I planned to make about putting a Fantom Thunder up against a Dyson DC07? Well I did that today! And with some some-what nice editing later, I have a motion picture online! It even comes with vintage opening music! yay!

As usual, The Fantom beat the DC07 (Even with the filters freshly washed!) and deep-down, scrubbed-in dirt removal, even though The Fantom broke some plastic off the cyclone the day before (The Plastic is starting to become brittle in the funnel, but still performs like a champ!). The Dyson has broken EVERYTHING plastic it can, I had to manually hold the wand and tank to the vacuum to make it work! it even broke ANOTHER chunk of plastic off the carry-handle While filming!

The Dyson DC07 has tremendous suction FYI and that looks rigged, no offence
The Dyson DC07 has 330 AW and you are not doing a fair test, a broken Dyson vs a good condition Fantom.
BTW Dyson sold the patents to Fantom, so you should like Dyson in a way. The DC07 may be fragile, but a later model is better and more durable. The Dyson DC14 is more durable, and the plastic, (purple) is always fragile

No, it's not.

That's the difference a decent brushroll makes. It's not all about suction power.

I never thought of that

At work, we have a testing laboratory for vacuum cleaners. A mechanical arm pushes a vacuum across brand-new sections of carpet with a measured amount of dirt in them. After a preset number of cleaning strokes, the carpet is then weighed and the difference between the weight before vacuuming and the weight after vacuuming determines the percentage of dirt removed. It would be fun to use a new fantom thunder, which I own, against a new Dyson DC07 which I also own. It's a very scientific way to determine actual cleaning effectiveness. I think I will just have to make a video. Don't know which one will win, because the thunder has a brush roll that is very substantial. I might just have to pair the thunder up with a DC 17 absolute. I think the absolute would win hands down

I never rig my tests!

I even gave the Dyson an edge by washing it's filters (and the Dyson was sticking to the carpet during the first trial!). It comes down to the brush design, like Tom said.I would've loved to had a Baird meter on hand!

The hose suction test was really unusual which was what I meant. The Dyson DC07 does have 330 AW, but that's the early models, sorry and the later ones had 290 AW due to them sticking to the floor too much.
The Dyson DC07 you have shouldn't loose suction, it IS unusual, and A DC07 ORIGIN WOULD do so much better.
The Hose suction, is actually more than a dual cyclonic Fantom (of course) because of the root cyclone technology and the motor it uses

When I use my Dyson DC14 all floors with the wand, and I try to vacuum, if it sucks on something like a curtain or whtever, the Dyson goes RUNNING towards me, it's really fast. That has a stupid amount of suction, yes when not needed at the hose. something like 230 AW would be sensible enough.
BUT The Dyson should be able to suck up bits through the hose successfully, that is my point

Super-sweeper I watched your video did I miss something as I didn't see the Dyson vacuum the sand off the carpet, just the Fantom!?

In answer to Parwaz786 doesn't the Dyson DC07 have different air watts and motor wattage to the UK version?

As far as I am aware, some of the American collectors I know have said "The Dyson DC07 has the most suction out of any other vacuum I have" and the British ones are 1400W with 330AW (British) and Malaysian ones are 290 AW with 1400W. DC14 is the same, but with 280 AW and 1400W

That's very unusual

My DC07 Animal still performs like a champ after 6.5 years. Mine is a 2007 model, and hasn't broken a BIT throughout the years. It still has the same suction and cleaning performance from day one. If I were to hit a Dyson with a hammer, it would bounce right off.

Fantom, on the other hand, used Dyson's patents, such as the dual cyclonic technology and instant release wand with automatic conversion, and paid Dyson to use them. However, due to a disagreement between Dyson and Fantom, Fantom suffered from a HUGE decline and filed for bankruptcy in late 2001.

I've heard on YouTube that Fantoms tend to have low suction through the hose, likely because they haven't been run in years. I've also heard that Fantoms should be broken in, by using it as your daily driver. Usually afterwards, the suction goes up dramatically.

I did a similar test between my Dyson DC07 and my Hoover Windtunnel 2 Rewind Pet. I vacuumed my first floor really well with the Dyson, then went over the same area with the Windtunnel. It picked up a small fistful of hair and fluff, plus a small pile of dust and grit. The Hoover has fragile plastic and has had a few parts break, namely the cord clip and dirt cup hinge, which I discussed last month. I have to unscrew the top of the dirt cup in order to empty it! However, surprisingly, the retractable cord still works!

If I were to buy a new Dyson, I would get the DC65 Animal. It looks really nice.

The hose pickup was awful, and while I've only had minimal real-life experience with a DC07,  I would never expect it to do so poorly if it were proper working condition. If you had to manually hold the wand and tank together, I bet along the way there was a leak. </span></span>

Oh dear!

That's a good catch! I completely forgot to edit in the Dyson part! I thought I recorded the Fantom and Dyson in one take!

 


I would NEVER forge results, Even if my vote goes for Fantom! The test was repeated 3 times to rule out any mistakes made. 


 


Bagintheback-You're right! When the Dyson lost suction, I forgot I had to hold the bin to the vacuum to make it work!

 


It's hard to see, But the Dyson was leaving substantial dirt on the carpet, plus flicking it back onto my legs!

This test is mostly accurate. The Fantom Thunder will out clean a Dyson, be it DC07, DC33 or otherwise on a carpet, better brush roll design. The hose on the other hand, the Dyson has better suction, but on this particular setup, the Fantom's wide diameter opening gives it the advantage. As fas as why Fantom Thunder has less hose suction than you'd think it would have, it is purely a design issue, you'll notice If you run it in tool mode it still diverts some airflow to the floor.

That DC07 has to be one of the worst examples of a DC07 I've ever seen, firstly, that sounds like a very worn clutch, and half way through the video, it started to make a strange noise as if suction was leaking from somewhere. No offense, but I still don't think this is a very fair test. And again, I'm by no means a Dyson fan!

Just for you then, I'll drag my spare DC07 in much better shape out of the barn, and do the entire test over again. The Dyson might as Well forfeit the fight while it can!

Excuses, Excuses... Have you tried a DC17? I would love to, but I never heard of a good condition DC17 performing crap. All I hear is that they are either good, or too aggressive

Comparing the Thunder to a DC07 is very fair, they're both from about the same time. Fantom left in 2001, and then came the DC07 in 2002. Although I'm sure the Fantom could out-clean many vacuums newer then it!

Well, The Fantom has a motorised brushbar, and the Dc07 is clutched, and trust me, the DC07 is not an appropriate vacuum for thick US carpeting which the Fantom Thunder may be for. The date of launch is not relevant because it's like saying a Dyson Dc01 (90 AW) vs a Hoover vacuum (much more powerful machine) so do you get that?
Even on our carpets at home, especially the thick ones our DC07 struggles with the thick pile. Our origin one is fine (ish)

I'm willing to wager one of my spare Kirbys on your typical American carpet, that the 11 amp version of the Thunder is the best performing bagless cyclonic upright to date, and the current Rainbow is the best cleaning bagless on the market.

A properly working 11 amp Thunder filters better in the cyclones, and cleans very well. I had one outright, my bday present for my 14th bday. The only thing on that HEPA was carbon from the brushes, we only replaced it after 6 years because we felt it should be. Serial #10635 and still works.

Having used the current Rainbow, that motor is so darn powerful and coupled with the constant airflow finding a better performing bagless isn't easy.

I rank Dyson as the best in a discount store. If you go to Walmart you probably won't exceed it. Comparing it to a Fantom is irrelevant to most because you can't easily find one in great shape. Comparing it to high end vacs like Rainbow isn't fair due to cost differences.

I can completely believe this test. On my area rugs (which is similar to UK carpet) my DC07 Animal barely grooms the carpet. It picks up the surface dust and grime, but leaves so much behind. I have to vacuum with another vacuum (any vacuum) to get the rest of the crap out of the carpet. And my DC07 was restored in November and used very seldomly. I think I've only used it in the last 4 months to vacuum up rice I dropped on the floor and hair off my Kirby vacuum.

To further elaborate on the previous comment, I have my DC07 upstairs and DC33 downstairs, I use my Rainbow D4 upstairs and E series downstairs. I hadn't used the DC07 in a bit after weeks of using the D4. I told my son we had to do a quick job before his mom got home so we did a quick run, he used a Fantom Thunder downstairs and I used the Dyson. I got little more than dog hair. It was really quite bad. I pin it all down to the brushroller.

And no, I don't 'get that'. It's perfectly fair to put one bagless vacuum up to another. Comparisons are comparisons. All in all, they're all vacuums! Why is unfair to compare one vacuum to another?
